Check Engine & VSC light on.. need some help
my check engine light and vsc light stayed on after i started my car yesterday. car runs fine, but the vsc & check engine light are on.
i have been running premium since i got it, but the last two fill ups i put 87 in it because i didn't see a different in gas mileage. I do do some minor towing with the vehicle, but always play it safe towing; i.e. take back roads to avoid highways, keep heater on to keep engine a bit cooler, etc. I also recently put on new winter tires on (firestone winterforce)
I am curious if you guys think it is the new gas i put in my car causing the lights to come on, or if it might be something more major..
like i said, the car runs fine. only reason im posting is because i have 52,000 miles on my car (08xb), and the dealership says my warranty is void.

the dealership can't void your warranty, go to another dealership.
your 3year/36k mile bumper to bumper warranty has expired, but your 5 year/60k mile powertrain warranty is still in effect.
gas has nothing to do with it. running 87 octane is all you need to do unless you super or turbocharge the engine.
easiest solution, pull the CEL code, go to autozone or pepboys or wherever and have them pull the code out if you don't have a scangauge or similar tool.

we had a sienna come in that had those symtoms and it turned out to be one of the o2 sensors. not sayin that is what you have. just throwin it out there. i would check with another dealership cuz i believe powertrain warranty is 5 years/60000 miles.
thanks for your help. i figured changing my gas had nothing to do with it, but having previously owned a fully built turbo car - you understand that there is a difference in how your car runs with premium versus 87,..
i will go get my codes checked 2day. i have to dj 2 weddings this weekend (fri & sat), so i am hoping my car gets me through this weekend with towing,.. (gigs only 5 miles away from my storage unit)..
i tried to find my paperwork for when i bought my car - looking into the warranty - and couldnt find any paperwork about the warranty... online said 60,000 miles, so im good..
im just hoping its something small.... only problem i ever had with my car, i had to replace the engine wiring harness (under warranty at time).. i love my xb, hate to have problems with it.
thanks again.

update: just got the codes checked: it seems like a bad tank of gas. all the codes had the fuel system/gas in common.. im going 2 refuel 2mrw with premium, and hope the lights go away, otherwise- its to the dealership first thing monday.
i use Shell gas 99% of the time (right by my house). and when i use other gas (kwik trip, mobil, etc) i put only enough to get me to my shell gas station.
i put some premium shell gas in it today,, and my car died right away after starting it up.. F!, i cranked it some more and gave her some juice, she runs, although idles low (500ish)... im going to add some HEET to my tank, and see if that helps at all. cant really hurt it.
also when it in park and i rev it to a certain limit say 2000, it dips down then back up. and i dont move my foot. i did it several times and the same thing.. it only dips like 100-200 rpms. almost like there is a vacuum leak. but i dont know enough about cars..

Actually, alot of xBs idle at around 500-600. I wouldn't be able to help you with the RPM dips but I'll just agree with you and say it's a leak. Where's the super techs to give an answer?

Sounds familiar. I had the same problem numerous times after refueling, especially on long road trips. The car would start and stall, and/or start and struggle to idle. It hasn't happened in several months now since I stopped topping off the tank. When the pump first shuts off, don't add any more. See if that helps.
The second issue is pretty normal for any new FI car. As long as the idle stabilizes after the first rpm dip, it's normal.
OK, first you only need regular gas, anything else is a waste of money unless your Turbo or Supercharged.
Second, you got codes pulled, but you didn't let us know what those codes were. That data can answer a lot of questions. If they all had something to do with an emissions leak, then you may need a gas cap, or other portion of the emission system replaced. Tests will pinpoint the cause.
Last, you would be suprised how many vehicles are repaired with a computer update. The computer is set up for a new vehicle, but as it ages, things change and new operational perameters that take in to account the wear and changes the vehicle has gone through can make it run better and also avoid a lot of engine light problems. ANY VEHICLE with an OBD2 system that has more than 50,000 miles on it, needs a computer update. I see it EVERY DAY in our shop. Powertrain warranty will not cover an update because it is needed due to "wear" over time.

The Autozone pulled 3 codes and here they are with their definitions.
P0441: Evaporative emission control system incorrect purge flow. probable cause: leak in EVAP system, Blocked EVAP purge line, faulty purge VSV.
p0455: Evaporative emission control system pressure leak detected - large leak. probable cause: faulty fuel cap, EVAP line leakage, pump module failure, canister faulty.
P0171: Air/Fuel mixture system lean bank 1 (cylinder number 1 denotes bank 1). probable cause: low fuel pressure, faulty MAF/VAF sensor, cylinder misfire condition, faulty h02s/AF sensor, large vacuum leak.
Let me know what you guys think is the culprit for my rngine troubles. like i said i "thought" is was the gas, but lights still on and almost went through a tank of premium without any major changes (car is running fine now, but lights still on).
thanks

With those codes it has nothing to do with the fuel your using it is an O2 sensor, vacuum leak or something like that. Whatever it is, it is covered by warranty take it directly to the dealership, if they give you some bs report them to Scion and take it to the next dealership. 60k warranty on engine and emmissions warranty should be longer not sure of exactly what scions emmissions warranty is but it should be longer than the drivetrain. Most cars are like 7 years 100k for emmissions warranties.
i did not reset the computer.... yet. dont know how. is that something i can do? or do i need to bring it in?
- i am trying to google the warranty info, so i have it in hand when i go to the dealership.
