Yeah, I'm not sure how to handle that situation. I'm thinking about
printing out some of those "thanks for parking so close to my car _______...
did you leave me a can opener so I could get out" cards to leave on cars that
park like that.

This is what I have always said! It's the older folks that are the parking lot vandals! The old ones (you know who you are) have no respect for other peoples property. Probably because they are so close to death that they don't care! I hope I am not that way when I am old. I would venture to say 90% of door dings are the result of careless old people. They literally use your car as a door stop!
One time I was sitting in my car at the mall opening a CD and all of the sudden a hear and feel a "WHHOOMPP!!" I swore that someone had ran into my car the impact was so great (my whole car rocked!). I look out my window and some old lady was getting out of her husbands caddy and she still had her door resting against my car and was using it as a brace to lift herself out of her car. She was PUSHING her door into my car!!
I jumped out and said "what the hell are you doing!!" I looked at my door and saw a dent and a crack in the paint where her door was resting. "You just dented my car! Why would you do that??" I asked. She got all scared looking and slinked back into her car and shut the door. Her husband said "what's the problem?" I pointed to the dent and crack in my car and he looked at it and said "that could have already been there!" I got really mad and opened up the old lady's door and gently laid it against my car. "Wow, whats the chance that your door lines up perfectly with the dent and you have blue paint on your door edge from my car?" He mumbled something about "damn kids" or something and got in his car and started to leave!! She went to pull her door shut and I started screaming at them insanely! He took off. I called the police and gave his plate #, but nothing ever came of it. I was told it wouldn't be worth it to take them to court. My word against theirs.

I'm not going to say that old people don't do these things because I'm sure some do. But from what I've seen, 95% of the time, door dings are from little kids who fling their doors open. From the time my son was a toddler, we've taught him to be very careful of ther cars when he opens his door. Some parents just don't care. Especially if their car is a piece of junk.

poor wife.LOL...yeah well, she doesn't really mind too much. Sure, it's an "old person's" car, but it is a nice car. Back before my dad past away, he had a leg amputated below the knee. He realized that it would be alot easier to slide in and out of a car with leather interior than one with cloth. So they offered their two-year-old LeSabre to us for a song. We didn't really want a Buick, but it was too good to pass up. And like I said, it is a nice car.

I was at lunch with a co-worker a few months back and these 2 old people got into their car and proceeded to back up making no use of their mirrors and would have backed into me if I didn't back up. Then they pulled forward and rear-ended this truck(probably did more damage to their car than his truck), they back up and then proceed to drive off. As slow as they were in the parking lot, once they turned onto the road, they hauled cheeks. A friend of mine has an old beater and anytime someone opens their door and hits his car, he waits until they're gone and repays them 10 fold. WHAM!!! Sometimes I've felt like doing this, but I don't want to hurt my baby.
I travel a lot for work and when I park at the airport, I write down color, make, model, license plate of the cars parked on both sides of me. You never know when the extra time is going to pay off.

I was on my Ducati motorcycle a few years ago when some blue-hair in a land yacht turned left right in front of me, like I wasn't even there. Years of defensive driving had me anticipate this exact thing, but I still laid into her with my dual 130db Fiamm horns and came to a stop in the middle of the intersection. I looked around, and the drivers in the cars were just shaking their heads in disbelief. Well, that was the last straw, so I flipped a u-turn and chased her down as she was turning into a mobile home park. I got right beside her, flipped up my visor, and proceeded to scream at her that 1) she almost hit me, 2) was she blind or something, 3) what's her problem, etc. All she did was sheepishly look up at me and mumble "I'm sorry, I'm sorry...". I told her sorry doesn't cut it, and proceeded to inform her that I have just as much of a right to be on the road as she does, and she violated my right of way, etc. My adrenaline was pumping too much to just let it go. If my ranting and raving at her will make her think twice before turning left in front of another motorcycle, then it was worth it.
Just this Saturday, I was riding my Harley Sportster back to the base when someone turned left right in front of me, heading into the Joint Forces Staff College. I braked in time and threw up my hands in disgust, and saw that the driver basically didn't even look before making his turn, and was yapping on his cellphone. I was tempted to turn right and catch up to him and read him the riot act at the very least, but causing a scene like that at the entrance to a military facility with armed Navy guards probably would not have been a good thing. Next time though, I don't care where I am, if someone does that again, I'm going to make it a point to "educate" that dumbass driver of their violation of my right of way, and take it from there...

I sure hate to see how you are going to react when something really serious happens. Life is too short to have such strong feelings over a vehicle..it just isn't worth it. Do you have grandparents? This past weekend I saw an old woman back her Buick into a car behind her, which was stopped in the road. I agree all age groups have their fair share of bad drivers, but honestly, elderly people have nothing for reaction time, drive way to slow, and don't pay attention. Anyone who refutes this is either really old, or lying.

I feel you man. I think it was summer of 2000 my buddy had just gotten a brand new Prelude so we were driving around and stop at a liquor store to get some smokes and as we're walking out this 60 year old lady opens the door to her chrysler wide open as far as it would go until it hit my boys car then starts using it as a crutch to get herself out which resulted in 2 more dings. When we asked her wtf she was doing she just smiled and then when we asked if she was gonna pay for the damage she said something along the lines of "you young boys look like you could afford to fix it yourself" and walked off like nothing happened. Got her plate number and insurance actually took care of it with nothing out my my friends pocket I think they got hold of her insurance company and made them pay for it.

Bad drivers come in all ages and drive all sorts of cars... young drivers lack experience, middle-aged drivers have too many distractions, and older drivers lose their reaction skills
I think that truly sums it up!
lighten up and smell the roses
I wish it were that easy and I could be so blindly blissful. But it's difficult to be that
way when people are stupid and inconsiderate...it's even harder when you are DEAD
because someone is driving stupid.
Just a couple weeks ago I was hit head on by some moron who thought it was a
good idea to dive headlong across four lanes of traffic to get to his apartment
complex a few seconds earlier rather then wait for the flow of traffic to pass.
He misjudged the distance and his speed, and hit me head on doing at least 45
when I was doing 45 in the opposite direction. If it weren't for the fact that I was
in a SAAB, there is a good chance I'd not have my legs to walk on ever again!
I'd love to get a motorcycle, but if I can't feel safe driving in a car because people
are too wrapped up in their own self centered, blissful "smell the roses" lives, then
I can't imagine getting on a cycle of any kind!
People have to keep in mind, YOU ARE DRIVING A TWO TON BULLET AT
45+ MILES AN HOUR AND ARE AIMED TO KILL ANYONE.
Am I being too serious about this? NO, I think not. No more then if I saw someone
waving a loaded gun while wandering down a highway...it's just about the same
damn thing.
Someone parking stupidly or damaging property in a parking lot ____es me off
in a big way, it's selfish and careless. People driving stupid is a whole other world
of stupid.
I do wish that getting a license were much more difficult, and tests were taken
more often, PLUS in order to get that HUGE SUV that you don't need, or the
penis enlarger sports car that a test be taken to show that you can drive the
vehicle within it's (and your) abilities and skillset.
Sorry, I had to rant. I don't think people take any of this seriously enough.
I'll shut up now. :silly:

EEk13
02-09-2005, 02:33 AM
I agree Lonely Raven. (Some) people don't take driving seriously..
Testing should be more frequent and harder.. remember when you were 16 and STUDYING to take your license exam, and you were all jittery when you were doing the road test, knowing any mistake would fail you?
A mistake in a 2-ton bullet going 45mph will likely get you or someone else hurt or worse..
vehicle specific safety classes would be a good idea too.. i can't see them making it mandatory but maybe an insurance incentive would work..

Dings in your door are a part of life. If you want less of them, park away from the other cars and walk a few extra feet. If you've got 'em, wait until every door is dinged and you've got a few rock chips and scratches and have your car 2 toned.
Motorcycles are dangerous, a lot more so than cars. That doesn't mean that cars shouldn't watch out for motorcycles, but you have to accept the risks that go with cycle riding every time you swing your leg over that crotch rocket.
Bad drivers come in all ages and drive all sorts of cars... young drivers lack experience, middle-aged drivers have too many distractions, and older drivers lose their reaction skills
You said it. If anything, we should be requiring driving lessons for cheaper insurance, banning cell phone use while driving, and having older people tested annually for their reaction time.

Oh where to start...
First, just because you're an older driver doesn't mean you automatically get respect, at least not in my book. Respect is something that's earned, not given just because of your age, intelligence, wealth, or whatever.
Second, agree 100% that every age group has it's share of bad, stereotypical drivers. I fully agree that driving requirements need to be much more strict for younger drivers, say 18-21, and for older drivers, say anyone over 60. I'm sure statistically these age groups represent the biggest threat out there.
Third, riding a motorcycle is not inherently dangerous. Like a car, it's an inanimate object that takes a human operator. Throw in some inexperience, inattentiveness, lack of training, attitude, poor mechanical condition, on the part of either the motorcycle or vehicle operator, and you could have some potential problems. If the cage drivers would obey the traffic laws like everyone else, riding a motorcycle wouldn't be any more dangerous. But what makes it dangerous is they'll come out on the losing end of even just a "minor" fender-bender.
Fourth, relax and smell the roses? You've got to be kidding me. What color is the sky in your world? As long as people roll over and just blow it off, idiotic drivers will continue in their ways. What they need every now and then is a reality check. Driving a car is a privilege, not a right. If they abuse that privilege, then it should be pointed out to them in a not so subtle way. "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to sit back and do nothing."

He tries to hit me, and falls down. On his face. I had to call the ambulance, and give a report. I had folks that had seen the whole thing, and so no problem with me. But still. Old people can be weird.

My friends keep asking me how I kept from hitting their car or something like that. And it's simple, I was ____ed because they had a lack of respect for my property, I wasn't going to turn around and be just like them. I took pictures of the contact and their license plate incase I needed to make a claim to get something fixed. Nothing looked wrong, so I just drove off and left them to their unknown reality of not knowing that they did something wrong.

RacerxB,
Never said I yelled at her until they started to drive off. And contrary to what you may think, I think I displayed great restraint given the situation. I am sorry, I have heard this sob story before, that old folks should somehow get a pass on doing and saying nasty things. I don't care what your age, you get no free pass to damage my property.
Seriously, if you were sitting in you car and some little old lady SLAMMED her door into your car, you look at her and she is still pushing her door into your paint with all her might showing no concern fro damage she is causing, how would you react?
I suppose you would have just smiled and thanked her?
Honestly, I would have reacted a lot differently if she wouldn't have kept grinding her door into my car after crushing it. That showed that she knew exactly what she was doing and had no care for the damage she was causing.
And to answer your question, yes I have made mistakes driving and made some bad decisions as we all have. BUT THIS WAS NO ACCIDENT. An accident would be her bumping her door into mine and then pulling it back quickly. She continued putting all her weight into it and grinding her door into my car long after smashing it. I WOULD NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, DO THIS TO SOMEONE ELSES PROPERTY AND I NEVER WILL!!! (And neither would you I suspect!)

i've seen an old lady push her cart from the back of the line at the grocery store, and shove someone out of the way to get in front of them.. when that person yelled, she said "you ought to be ashamed, treating an old lady like that" i'm sorry, but that's messed up.

Not necessarily... The older people get, the less aware they are of their surroundings. You don't know for sure that she knew exactly what she was doing.

DOOR DINGS!DOOR DINGS!
I would like to agree with the people that say a majority of door dings come from old people, not so many of them come from kids. how do i know this?
I deal with cars in parking lots as a job. Honestly its what i do. I work security for Grand Rapids (MI) Parking Services. i deal i deal with door dings daily, especially on the nice cars. and i must admit the older the people the more disregard they have for others cars. a majority of the time when i have to take a report for door dings it is caused by a elderly person usually 65 or older.
we leave notes on the silver hair cars and almost 80% of the time they deny it when the call you or stop into my office.
it does ____ me off. they say respect your elders i say To hell with them ( only careless ones) wow i was hoping that this forum would come up at some time. i needed to vent. any other questions on door dings i would love to vent more...

Of course, there are the opposites as well. The jerks that park in the Handicapped stalls because they are closer to the store ... or the jerks that park their cars across three parking stalls to ensure that nobody dings thier paint job.
I've had several cracked windshields from vehicles flicking rocks up into the air as they drive past me. Should I chase them down and threaten them? Chips, dings, scratches and cracks are part of the hazards of owning a vehicle.
I agree that people need to pay more attention and have respect for other peoples property but showing restraint and realizing that it isn't the end of the world goes a long way toward making life a whole lot easier on everyone.

Haha...I don't think anyone is. But there are people who get paid to drive people around. These people are called Bus Drivers, Taxi Driver's. In my home town there's a bus like a shuttle at the airports and it's specifically aimed at old people who can't drive themselves. I don't know if other areas have these services, but there are buses and taxis. And no one better say "Old people don't have money for buses/taxis" b/c that's BS. They have money to cruise around in a new(ish) Cadillac and pay for the gas that those boats guzzle. My Grandma still drives OK on the highway and in the smaller towns, but when she has to drive in the bigger areas or long drives, my Mom or my Aunt drives her. It's the never ending cycle. Parents take care of their kids and later on in life the tables turn.

Screaming and scaring an old lady didn't "help"her pay attention, it just made her more nervous and now she'll probably brake in front of you too.
Pushing on the door doesn't mean it was intentional, lack of awareness is far-reaching. they could've easily thought it was just extended, maybe?

$250 fix!!
According to my wife who is a cop, says that the cops should have done a report and either wrote them for malicious destruction of property, vandalism or leaving the scene of an accident. With that much evidence the "your word against theirs doesn't float" the cop at the scene would have analized the evidence and put all the info in the report. Chances are after the report was filed the couples insurance would have fixed your car without even going to court. I would follow up on it if you are not happy with having to fix someone elses problem :lalala: I say at least give their plate number to your insurance company and let them contact the old peoples insurance and collect the damages. Can't hurt to try

Just to clear matters up, this old lady wasn't decrepid. She was in her mid-late 60's, looked like a Joan Rivers type. She wasn't THAT old. She was the kind of type that looks down her nose at you in her big Caddy and all. By the way, I am 38 years old, so I am no spring chicken either.

Jethro B,
Thanks for the advice. I did, in fact, file a police report (this was 8 or 9 years ago) and was in touch with my insurance company and the police for a few weeks. They said they visited the addess of the suspec and inspected their vehicle but could find no evidence. The officer said I could persue it if I wanted, but he said the burden of proof would be on me, and it may not be worth it considering the amount damage done and the fact I would miss work, etc. to persue a trail.

Yeah, my boy did that to a Camaro at In-N-Out Burger last year. Luckily the owner thought it was such a small ding that he wouldn't even take my phone number.
But my son got a swat anyway, just to make it stick in his memory.

A car is the second biggest investment most people make. It only makes sense to try and protect it so it will have more value when you need to sell it for a new one. Plus I just like to keep things I own as perfect as possible. When at Wal-Mart I always park away from the masses to try and prevent incidental dents and dings. Most of the people who aren't cautious about swinging their doors into yours are also the same people that will drive around the parking lot for 15 minutes looking for a spot that will save them 30 ft more of walking. Park away from them and you'll be almost safe.
A word of warning about windy days and store parking lots. I had two dents in my last truck because the wind blew a buggy into the side of it. Put as much distance between your car and the buggys and as many islands as possible too. I watched a buggy go from one side of a Wal-Mart parking lot to the other one day during high winds. It would have left a nasty dent if it had found a car.

Life is too short to have such strong feelings over a vehicle..it just isn't worth it.
Perhaps the actions, thoughts of action, etc. of some folks in this thread have been intense, but the mere fact that you're a member of scionlife would tell me that you view a Scion as something more than an appliance that gets you from point A to point B.
Door dings, bumper damage, crappy drivers, etc. are all threatening and different people perceive the level of threat and therefore implement their reaction differently. I certainly understand why they'd want to seek revenge, but I surely don't condone it

I had an elderly lady open her door into my car while I was getting my child out and she didn't even stop walking when I said something to her. I had another rear end me in my 2 day old mustang. I was stopped at a light coming out of a parking lot (Mars grocery store for the elderly) and he bumped me. Wouldn't have done any damage except his license plate was so mangled from run ins with other objects that it damaged my bumper. Of course it is always your word against theirs and they know it. So even the insurance company refused saying I backed into him (his and his wifes claim) I know I will be that old someday but I think after seeing all the people running into stores (I live in florida) and cars running amuck in parking lots that something should be done. Testing yearly at a certain age to make sure they can drive safely (and park too)!!!

I hate to admit it, but I've been keeping track of my driving "experiences" last week. Since I drive for a living right now as a Parts Runner there are plenty of mishaps for me to be aware of.
And unfortunately, out of the 4 "problems" I had last week, three of them were with older people who were simply not paying attention.
Most ironically, another incident last week was my first glimpse of a tC on the road. I only saw the rear because she cut me off, and then cut two other people off to make a hard right. Not a very good first impression of the car I'm going to buy and she was just as bad if not worse than some of the old people, cuz' she did it intentionally. Stupid _____, giving a bad name to young people and Scion owners.

i don't think that all old drivers are bad. my grandmother for example is a great driver, while i would never ride with my grandfather. I think the main thing that ticks me off about 'some old people' not all is that they don't respect other peoples property. About a week ago i was at the post office and i park next to a old caddilac. You guys prob know the car i am talking about .
well he starts to back out and has his wheel turned and he hits the side of my 1 week old xB and i tell him to pull back in. this guy doesnt even say sorry but just tries to make excuses for himself. luckily for me he hit the rubber strip on the wheel well and i just bent it back into place. It's all about respect though, no matter how old you are everyone should treat others property with respect.
