for those of you who bought the xb and realize it was a bad buy why was it a bad buy and what other car you think would of been a better buy?

Only negative things i've seen are (for some odd reason) bad mileage , and lack of power.

I have no problem with the mileage. I get 27 to 29 driving to have fun and I have a couple of employees driving them, one gets 32 and the other is consistently averaging 34. I added AEM intakes to all three. The one getting 32 is an automatic, the other two are five speeds. As for power, I don't plan on taking it to the strip but I take most people off the line without any problems and if you rev the hell out of them they move pretty good.

I have two negatives. The first is the torque steer and the second is you can't hit a big puddle fast without popping out the rear bumper clips.

No regrets.

xB is best value I've had in a new car.

I knew the power situation when I bought it.

If power is important to you, don't by any Scions.

Regrets? I regret not being able to pay cash for it, and that I can not do mods quicker, and too many people buying it and it gets less unque with each purchase. More power would be nice, but should not expect power with any sort of test drive, and knowing it was a 1.5 (Echo engine). The gas mileage would be disappointing, but perhaps it is the way you drive. Try driving the way you figure an old geezer would for a tankfull, and I would immagine your mileage would increase. Also, odometer has been noted that it is "off" between 4 and 5%, so multiply your mileage by that and it does help. I take it very easy most of the time, because wife freaks with speed, so lowest I have gotten is 28 (without the multiplier), and have gotten 36 going a calm 55-60 down 101 from San Francisco. I am very happy with mine, but if I drove like I do and still got only 20-20, I would be disappointed also. Enough said, I think!

squarepants,

According to your profile, you have 18"s. They kill your gas mileage. Replace them with light weight 15" wheels, get some groundwire, use synthetic oil and your gas mileage will go up. :)

if I had to guess, I would think the lack of power and bad mileage are related in that:

to get more power, you press harder on the gas, causing the gas mileage to drop.

Oddly, if you were looking for a powerful vehicle, I'm not sure why you would even consider an xA/xB. I mean, it IS a 1.5L econobox engine rated (highly?) at 115hp, putting down (from the K&N dyno) 92hp to the wheels. What exactly would one expect?... killing an Enzo in a 1/4 mile probably isn't high on the list of design cues for the Scion corp designers.

my only regret is not being able to switch colors to suit my mood...
Sometimes I'll see a TCP and be like hmmm so easy to keep clean
sometimes the BCP catches my eye and I go hmm.. I haven't seen another one
sometimes even camo looks hot... (and could look good dirty)...
Then there are those times when you just want a PW cuz you know you can so some cool things with white...
Then there's the times when I look at pics of the RS1 and my biggest regret is NOT BEING ABLE TO GET ONE!!!!

realistically though... paint... most definately the paint needs work... I just wish before I knew I started driving it.... so I would've tries to 3m the whole thing... or got a better clearcoat. now I'm considering if I should just touch-up all of them... or just get it repainted.
BOP is still one of my favorite colors... it seems to be lightening though... wasn't as dark as when I first bought it...

The only regret I have is buying the over priced scion alarm. other than that I love my box when I first saw the launch commercial I knew I had to have one. They launched here in Vegas in June of 2004 and by the 24th I was in my 2005 bcp box. Man I love this thing

I did not mean my negatives as regrets, just that if I had to find negatives those were my only two. I love my box and my employees love theirs. I don't understand the mileage problem, 28 to 34 is great. My employees are using these as installation and sales vehicles and they are thrilled with the mileage. I like mine so much I am down for a 2.0.

As far as the mileage multiplier goes you are going the wrong way. I have had the GPS in all three of my XBs and every one is off but the speedometer says you are going faster than you really are so the gas mileage is worse than it appears. At 80 on the speedo the actual speed is between 77.5 and about 79 depending on which unit I am testing.

One of my employees was at a customer's house last week. The customer asked if he could move the car and my employee said "the keys are in it". Ten minutes later he is wondering where the customer went. The guy comes back and said he was driving around the neighborhood. He could not believe the way it drove and now he is buying one as a wedding gift for his daughter.

I also, as many people here know, am upset by the lousy mileage. I do regret buying one only in that I regret buying two. And that's not due to the car, but instead other situations (out of cash, could live with less car payments much better).

I do wish I'd have kept my contour for the winter. My post wasn't helpful either... I just like to hear me type.

That is not helpful, if you want to participate on this website please make sure that your posts are positive. Is this your impression of a kindergarten teacher? Your post was not helpful either, coulda PMd him. This website is getting a little too PC. Seems you can't say anything to anyone anymore without some adult supervision. People tend to disagree at times and sometimes it's truly amusing to see it play out. Every forum has it and the ones with the least amount of whiners tend to have more inconspicuous moderators. If someone is being an idiot, people will straighten them out soon enough. Just seems a little Mod-Happy lately.

I've had my 05 box for 6 weeks.... no regrets. Power, acceleration, and gas mileage are just fine. It has far more power than my old Suzuki Samurai and about the same as the Hyundai Elantra wagon I used to have.

i dunno if this counts or not but i didnt like how when i bought it i was told any toyota dealer could service it. but when it needed servicing my local toyota dealer refused to touch it because they didnt sell scions. so i had to drive an hr+ to get it serviced.

which also factored in when i traded it in recently. i probably wont buy one again until a place closer sells them. its just not feasable to drive an hr away whenever something needs warranty work or to get it looked at.

I guess one of the main reasons I buy Toyota is they are the first new vehicle I owned that never had to go back to the dealer. My 1994 Toyota pick up that now belongs to an employee has never been back to a Toyota dealer. I think I would question whether I wanted service done at a dealership that did not want my business

I just got mine and no regrets so far. Is the gas milage that bad? It could be like a v8 truck chugging gas and the power issue? Hell, you should have read the specs and have done your homework.

**RANT**
I hate to see people buy ECONOMY CARS (ie: Protege, Civic, Focus, Neon, etc) and expect that with a few bolt on mods it'll be a race car. If a modded econo box could beat a ferrari, short of spending 10 times the cars worth, no one would by ferraris.

Econo cars can beat Ferrari's for about 10 grand not 100. sorry off topic. Back on topic , alot of people are getting around 25 mpg or more and complaining that it isnt 30-35 like the sticker says.

Regrets? None really. Oh, sure, the paint chipping on the front bugs me a bit, but that is what I kind of expected with a brick on wheels.
The only real regret I have is the poor lighting on the inside. ONE dome light stinks.

The gas mileage for me is above average, (and better then my new Beetle), so I like that. And the power, while not racing car fast, is fine, and what I expected with this car. The AEM CAI has helped a great deal in that area.

I agree with the dome light problem. My only other problem is the lack of power under certain circumstances. It's fine for me and my wife and some stuff but when I have 4 or 5 adults in it, it doesn't like to go well.

My regrets

Gap insurance - with scion security car cant get stolen, slow car means less change of getting in an accident

Scion security- alarm doesnt go off when i tap window or open door while locked...

Finishing touch - doenst cover key scratches

Over priced scion mats from dealer -100 bux for 4 mats

dome light....

low power engine... but i knew that when i bought it.

btw.... poor gas mileage....WTF! i get good gas mileage.... its only 20$ to fill tank and last me almost all week and i drive about 40 miles a day.

Anything can get stolen. Don't think that security system will keep your car where you put it. If someone really wants it, it's gone. Slow doesn't have anything to do with getting in an accident. Plus many people have had their boxes in excess of 100 MPH.

the gap insurance will cover your ___ if it ever gets totaled and the insurance company gives you less than you owe on it. but its better to get that from your insurance company instead of dealer, i pay 40 a yr i think for it, and once i have more the vehicle paid off than its worth i can just take it off

Please post in the gas mileage thread... type of transmission, wheels, tires, any mods you've made, type of driving, and how you calculate mpg. Let's see if we can find a common cause. I'm getting great mileage on my box, but I'm curious on what is causing others to experience this problem.

02-15-2005, 05:27 PM
Yep, as most of you know, my biggest gripe in the mpg too. HOWEVER. When I look at the other cars out there that I "might" consider buying and trade in my box, I can't find anything better that fits my needs and remains affordable and with even this good gas milage.

So yeah, the car doesn't sip gas like my old car, yeah, on really bad days it only gets 24 mpg, on good days it gets 29 in the city. Compared to other cars I might consider buying, its still the best deal out there.

I'm also wondering if the Automatic is suffering worse than the manual in the mpg dept. I think that the testers didn't take a lot of variable into consideration when testing the automatic. JMHO.

I drove both the auto and manual when I tested out the box. I have driven manual my entire driving career and prefer it to auto. However, I did not like the feel of the manual when I tested it out and got auto instead. Had I known about the short-shifter option, perhaps I shoudl have purchased the manual and installed the short-shifter... dunno.

After all of that, I basically really like my box. It fits my needs to lug around the dogs and their dog-show stuff and fit several oversized friends in the car when needed.

That's not Miles Per Gallon, that's Dollars Per Week.
