Default Lame Tranny

So my 5th gear grind has returned with a vengeance! Now it grinds at any shift above 3500 from 4th to 5th. WTF is going on? This started a little less than a year after I got the car so I put MT90 in it. When it returned recently I bought 1 quart of royal purple at the store and drained a quart and replaced it with that. It smoothed the shifting but the grinding is still there. What should I do? If I take it to Toyota will they deny any service because I dont have the factory fluid in the diff? I would just replace the fluid again and that might fix it temporarily but I only have 34k miles on my car and I shouldnt have to be doing that as it isnt my fault this trans sucks! Any advice is appreciated...

Btw I have the TRD SSK and Doc I bushings. Will this affect service as well? The grind before the mt90 started before I even added those mods...

I've heard of issues with syncros before in our tranmissions that have been replaced under warranty (I'm assuming the same tranny is used in the tc). I'd take it to scion and let them know. Just don't let them talk you out of what you think is a problem, because they definately will try. I'd also take the mods off before you go, since they will definately try and blame it on that.

I say flush it all out, I had problems with the redline oil in mine, made grinding and hard shifting worse. I flushed it for eneos and haven't looked back since. even in colder weather its still fine.

I have a ss and doc I bushings too. doc I makes the stick stiffer, but that's about it.

only times I do grind though is when I don't engage the clutch fully to shift.

that's my fault cause my seat is very far back

Yeah, but no matter how slow I shift it into 5th it still grinds. Im gonna take it in because this started even with oem fluid and Im pretty sure throwing in some Motul diff fluid isnt going to fix this forever.

bro i had the same issue with the OEM fluid.......reverse and 3rd grinded like no tommrow even if i did it very slowly...so i looked into it here on SL and asked around and saw the tranny fluid sawp in the tech area and redline was mentioned a whole lot..so i gave that a try at first it was great then as time when on it got worse worser about 2,000 miles or so then when i had the OEM fluid so i kept searching and ask a few other SL memebers and they recommeded eneos so i quickly made the switch and all my problems went away right away after about 100 miles of driving.....i been runnig eneos over 6 months no more girnding or issues but like another memeber mentioned i do grind sometimes but thats my fault as i dont push the clutch all the way down other then that no issues what so ever.....i went through the samething your going through now.. iwas really close on taking it to the dealer but decided not to wanted to make sur ei did everything in my power i could to fix it before hand

Best case scenario the mixing of the two fluids is causing it. Go back to stock fluid or straight mt-90 (I use 2 qts mt-90 and 1 qt mtl and its worked great). If that doesn't fix it, your synchro is gone.

It is your synchros from 4th to 5th mine did that from 1st to 2nd and took it to the dealer and got a new transmission. Should be warrentied if it has happened less then 36k miles. I have had 2 transmissions replaced so far cause the other ones fail or were not put in right. Is what i think. The one i had before this one lasted less then 1200 miles LOL!!! The fluid they took out of it was like silver spray paint with metal shavings. Never seen or heard of trans fluid like that and ask around at mech shops and they never heard or seen eathier LOL!!! But they put new trans in my car so I dont care. This one has lasted 800 miles so far.

Take it to the dealer and complain.

My transmission would make a knocking noise(sounded like a now end rod knock) and was VERY loud but it was intermittent and would ONLY do it when the car was parked, the A/C was on, outside temp was above 70, and the car had been driven about 10 miles to get the fluid temp up before you parked it.

I work for the dealer and had to fight to get my transmission replaced. Took me almost 30,000 miles worth of complaining to get it done. I worked with the tech talking about the issue(he had heard the noise) and we saved the trans fluid that came out when he drained it. I'm NOT hard on my xB, it's my family car, but at 41,000 miles, my gear lube was BLACK......There were no obvious signs of metal in the fluid but the color worried me.

Call Scion and tell them about your issues. Make SURE they know what is going on. If there is are issues with these transmissions then everyone that has a problem needs to speak up.

If you're still under your factory warranty, GET TO A DEALER AND GET IT NOTED!!!!

BTW.....The powertrain is covered for 60,000 miles, not 36,000.

In my experience, shift lockout is one thing, but grinding is another. Tired or poor fluid can definitely cause shift lockout (won't go into gear), but grinding should never be a result unless you either force the shifter or fail to fully depress the clutch (presuming, of course, the clutch adjustment is good.) If you're getting grinding without forcing and with fully depressed clutch, then the synchronizer is damaged. Playing with the fluid at that point is cosmetic, it doesn't repair the mechanical problem.

So I'm guessing you were told by the dealer to pound sand?
