View Full Version : Noise/ISO discussion DonNguyen 01-21-2010, 01:45 AM i know a lot of you aren't comfortable with high ISO and noise and what not....what are your reasons that you love/hate ISO? gcat007 01-21-2010, 02:14 AM It's new to me and I'm not certain what I should expect from it. I should experiment more since I love going over to Coronado and taking night time pictures. However I also have a feeling that's not all there is to high ISO's. I've been shooting 320 as my base ISO for a lot of things and I'm very happy with the out come. I guess I should dedicate a whole day to shooting high ISO settings... Maybe the gardens in Balboa would be good for that. Or even better I'm going to Disneyland and maybe I can do some shots without flash on a few rides? l1ttleslugger 01-21-2010, 04:23 AM i just shot some 3200 iso today. some light streaks for fun. ive just never tried it but i think im gonna try it this weekend or tomorrow. DonNguyen 01-21-2010, 05:13 AM light streaks with ISO 3200? snowromance 01-21-2010, 11:10 AM light streaks with ISO 3200? ditto. ??? l1ttleslugger 01-21-2010, 02:22 PM I was bored and wanted to see how it would come out. Long exposures but I just held it. http://l1ttleslugger.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/dsc_0042.jpg DonNguyen 01-21-2010, 10:00 PM thats long exposure....not high ISO SquallLHeart 01-21-2010, 10:03 PM yea.. you can do "light streaks" with a low ISO.. heheh.. road was a tad bumpy? l1ttleslugger 01-22-2010, 12:22 AM well the iso is high. sorry im still trying to grasp all the terms. yeah it was bumpy, it doesnt help that its an old el camino with stiff springs. gcat007 01-22-2010, 06:05 AM This was from my car shoot two gas pumps. ISO3200 Shutter speed 25 and f4.5 Canon 7D using 28-135mm lens. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4024/4294237899_62c908225b.jpg I also shot a few down at the La Jolla cove area at 6400ISO. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2715/4294266833_7f0aff2662_o.jpg and this one. It was fairly overcast with even darker clouds moving in. After about 45 minutes of rain free shooting as soon as I got in the car torrential down pour... Talk about luck. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2777/4295010114_89280c654b_o.jpg However, I still think I'm missing the point of High ISO shooting or as the LOL Cats say amidoingitrite? o8tC 01-22-2010, 07:06 PM i never liked it up until this pic i took...it gives it an interesting look and makes it have more character...i dont really know how to explain it ha ha shot @ ISO3200 with a canon t1i and a 18 55 IS http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2762/4281982909_464fcda605.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/rx2photography/4281982909/ l1ttleslugger 01-23-2010, 05:22 AM i did these today at iso 3200 i actually like it better this way as opposed to a lower iso. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/4296456635_fc475938e2_b.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4010/4296458365_aa527b6a3a_b.jpg Elijahtc 01-23-2010, 03:08 PM convert to black and white and see how u like that. l1ttleslugger 02-03-2010, 03:02 AM what about this one. i liked the colors in this one alot. http://l1ttleslugger.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/dsc_00631.jpg Jon 02-03-2010, 03:11 AM It works for that pic. l1ttleslugger 02-04-2010, 02:08 AM im trying to shoot mostly in higher iso. rcf22 02-04-2010, 11:34 AM im trying to shoot mostly in higher iso. In general, I would find that undesirable. It's an effect that is pleasant in different situations, but on a regular basis something that would just be distracting. Elijahtc 02-04-2010, 09:25 PM In general, I would find that undesirable. It's an effect that is pleasant in different situations, but on a regular basis something that would just be distracting. agreed. l1ttleslugger 02-04-2010, 09:52 PM Well I shoot in both. Usually I shoot at 100 but lately I've been shooting 100 then shooting the same thing at either 3200 or 1600. Just to see how it would come out. Invertalon 02-04-2010, 10:43 PM I have *NO* problem shooting up to ISO 6400 on my 7D... I am not afraid of a little noise, I have software for that if needed. The 7D handles high ISO very well, I love it. gcat007 02-09-2010, 05:19 AM I have *NO* problem shooting up to ISO 6400 on my 7D... I am not afraid of a little noise, I have software for that if needed. The 7D handles high ISO very well, I love it. Did you turn on the noise reducer on the 7D? When I shot with it off I hated the noise... just too much. Turned it on and the noise actually complements the photo's I take at 1600+ a lot better. MysTiKchRis 02-16-2010, 11:11 PM Shot this one at ISO2000 http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/4363232991_4cc00015da_b.jpg captainlaziness 02-16-2010, 11:21 PM I like high ISO and the associated noise with BW pictures, but not so much in color photography. MysTiKchRis 02-17-2010, 01:18 AM Yea the 7D Iso Performance is godly even with on cam noise reduc off Heres another shot at Iso1600 http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2512/4193271235_18b754260d.jpg This ones noisy because it was under exposed. Elijahtc 02-17-2010, 02:24 AM Chris, I've love to see the photo of the seats converted to b/w. MysTiKchRis 02-17-2010, 05:03 AM Almost BW http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4035/4363960423_0f98b44e2f_b.jpg Invertalon 02-18-2010, 01:19 AM Did you turn on the noise reducer on the 7D? When I shot with it off I hated the noise... just too much. Turned it on and the noise actually complements the photo's I take at 1600+ a lot better. I have the noise reducer on "normal", but its pointless anyway to a RAW file which is what I use... I have software to take care of noise if I need to clean up anything. I have no problems with the 6400 ISO images though out of camera. Here is a shot I have at ISO 6400... The detail retention is excellent. Very mild noise reduction with Neat Image. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh280/invertalon/snake.jpg Racersky 06-02-2010, 12:52 AM dam....i need to upgrade my body still have my canon rebel xt for three years lol Elijahtc 06-02-2010, 01:06 AM if u ask me, if ur shooting above 3200 then u need to attach a strobe cause ur prolly in damn near complete darkness. ha ha tCtCtC 06-02-2010, 01:09 AM Watching* DonNguyen 06-12-2010, 12:45 AM dam....i need to upgrade my body still have my canon rebel xt for three years lol there's nothing wrong with having an old body...i've had my camera body for 4 years now Racersky 06-12-2010, 03:29 AM About to pick up my 40D so it's a decent upgrade for me. Will be taking lots of pics hehe TheFantasticG 07-25-2010, 10:47 PM I have no problem shooting auto iso 200-3200 on my D90. LR3's noise reduction has allowed 6400 to be acceptable now. TheFantasticG 10-26-2010, 05:48 PM 3200ISO shots with a Sigma 105mm 2.8 macro on a Nikon D90 processed in LR3b2: http://www.gplimages.com/Nature/macro/Plasma-Macro/2010-09-11-Macro-Plasma-8294/1056288947_Fg4Qt-L-1.jpg (http://www.gplimages.com/Nature/macro/Plasma-Macro/14280695_WskdT#1056288947_Fg4Qt-A-LB) http://www.gplimages.com/Nature/macro/Plasma-Macro/2010-09-11-Macro-Plasma-8302/1056289521_Twk3Z-L-1.jpg (http://www.gplimages.com/Nature/macro/Plasma-Macro/14280695_WskdT#1056289521_Twk3Z-A-LB) http://www.gplimages.com/Nature/macro/Plasma-Macro/2010-09-11-Macro-Plasma-8304/1056289767_PPWWh-L-1.jpg (http://www.gplimages.com/Nature/macro/Plasma-Macro/14280695_WskdT#1056289767_PPWWh-A-LB) SquallLHeart 10-26-2010, 06:05 PM dam....i need to upgrade my body still have my canon rebel xt for three years lol heh.. you have an xt? i have the original digital rebel. (aka.. the 300D) btw, nice plasma shots... i'm gonna take some electric pictures myself soon.. hopefully. Invertalon 11-18-2010, 02:42 AM 7D does amazing with high ISO. These both 12,800 at f/2.8 - No noise reduction other than lightroom 3 (mild at that). I had no choice but to use 12,800 in this situation (I generally comfortable up to 6400) but after this, I will have no problem using 12,800 if need be. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1078/5137044659_c62526c707_z.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4035/5137657294_1ed6f1b320_z.jpg paul_dezod 12-09-2010, 07:23 PM I like IS stuff for certain high speed images like rushing water (pictured above) or a race car in motion shot. Those look great when the shutter speed is slowed down some. Ace83 01-24-2011, 02:28 AM here's some high ISOs for me.. 12800 not to bad :) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5130/5383298608_82cb5c14a6_z.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5127/5382697867_b7000aee87_z.jpg |
