View Full Version : DIY: Load Resistors for LED Turn Signals
greenguyshrek 01-21-2010, 08:39 AM I personally installed the dual changing amber/white turn signal LEDs from Performance HID and had the problem of rapid blinking when the turn signal was activated. Its like the blinker is having a epileptic seizure.
So the solution is to use a load resistor to simulate the approximate load that a regular incandescent bulb would put on the car.
This method is a lot cheaper then buying the relay which is $16
(I personally got mine at radioshack 10 ohm wirewound resistors - 10 watt - about $2.25 comes in a pair)

What it looks like. (I cut it down cause it's too long)

So this is pretty straight forward, find the easiest way to access the wires for the turn signal bulb on your car.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/Install%203/5.jpg
To make it work you need to do is connect one side of the resister to the Turn Signal Power and the other to the ground. It dose not matter which side is connected on the resistor.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/Install%203/ledinstall.jpg
Cut and splice open the green Power like so:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/Install%203/6.jpg
Then use a connector on one side put one end of the power wire and at the other end put the resistor and the power wire together. Should look like this:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/Install%203/7.jpg
Now cut and splice open the white ground wire.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/Install%203/8.jpg
Do the same thing as the power wire using a connector. Make sure to cut the wire the same size as the resistor.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/Install%203/9.jpg
The wires should look like this when its all connected up.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/greenguyshrek/Install%203/10.jpg
Wrap it up with electrical tape to make everything sealed and water tight as possible

Here is a video on the difference.

Looks awesome. What LED bulb did you get? Is it legal to blink white and yellow?
You do some of the best DIYs btw.

solder and heat shrink though=win

What Ive been told buy the CHP is that you can have white but you also have to have the amber reflector.
This is were you can get the bulb:

I know I just need to learn how and get the soldering tool.
gingles 01-22-2010, 07:56 PM soldering is like sex...take a second to get warmed up but once you are things start coming together. with soldering i say go to walmart or radio shack and but a 15w soldering iron along with a base and sponge.....let the iron heat up, whip it on the wet sponge to get any residue off, put a little solder on the iron, apply the soldering iron to the wire to heat the wire up and then apply the solder to the wires and or wire. its really really simple, just takes some practice.
Butt connectors aren't that bad.
Nice LED, pretty expensive though.

Ya but a dealer I know should be getting them soon for like half of there price
SEXB909 02-01-2010, 02:09 AM Whooooo love ya Shrek dizzle. Just for the plug, come by the pad before I leave so I can lace up Peggy's ride. Very nice write up and I shot a copy over to the boss.
greenguyshrek 02-01-2010, 05:25 AM You got it big dog
I'll bring the tc when I can
scyon 02-01-2010, 06:54 AM nice job love it for sure
bB2NER 02-01-2010, 01:24 PM Wouldn't buying an electronic flasher relay work better than cutting your harness? Plug and play baby for around 10-15 bucks.

Why thank you

Yes there is a relay and it is $14 but with that relay you lose the flashing light when you lock and unlock your car
DJ_FroZone 02-04-2010, 05:40 PM This is amazing. i just wish those bulbs weren't so expensive. anybody know of a lower end version? (or a discount code haha)
VVTiMovesMe 02-04-2010, 06:01 PM that looks awesome!
nice diy and i like the seizure one better :)

PerformanceHID's should be getting a shipment of these in soon. I got the last set. I know they will be selling them for like half of the other company's price.
that looks awesome!

The seizure ones are cool but the blinking noise just gets annoying in the car. Plus you really cant tell that they change from White to amber.
DJ_FroZone 02-04-2010, 11:41 PM maybe make a thread for him (or point me to his) so i can get on that when he drops that price.

Will do, but If you need any other lights, HID's or LED's his username is SEXB909 (http://scionlife.com/forums/member.php?u=143171)
his name is Kirby and he is in charge of Performance Hid's.
llblutigerll 02-10-2010, 07:17 PM would this work on the tc for the front turn signals?

This will work for any car that has the fast blinking due to LED bulbs. What happens is that when you put LEDs in for blinker bulb your car thinks that the bulb is out due to the low voultage. So by putting a load resistor in makes your car think that the bulb is still good and will slow the blinking to stock.

I just got the flasher relay and I have that issue, the flashing light when I lock and unlock doesn't work. Isn't there a way around it w/o having to splice and use the load ones...because those things can get really hot and could cause a fire (from what I hear).

I think this is the only other way. The only thing I can thunk of is you don't have to splice into your harness you can use T taps and when you wrap the harness back up leave the load resistor out (don't wrap it). Thus way all the heat won't be in the harness it will b out in the open. I wish I would have done it this way.

CTB4EVA 04-16-2010, 08:17 AM I want to do this to my car and have been looking at the pictures and comparing it to my car and i noticed that in the pic there are three different wires at the socket and in my car there are only two and i have the 2010 tc. is there anyone that has it similar to me or a DIY for that. thanx!!

If you notice I don't even touch the 3rd wire. So I'll you have to do is just connect the wires like I did
There are 3 wires on the Xb cause there's the:
ground
power for signal
power for running light
on the tc there is only the ground and the turning signal
that's why you don't have the third wire
CTB4EVA 04-16-2010, 02:20 PM Okay thanx appreciate it!!!! i just didn't want to start doing anything to it until i am for sure on everything lol!!! well i should have mine done within this next month or so!!! Thanx for the help and the DIY!!!!

Where can I get this CF19 Dual Load Flasher Relay or the tC? Does this relay work with both halogen and LED bulbs?
