My husband just called from the road, he's making the drive from Vegas to So Cal and the car just lost 2, 4 & reverse gears in our xB. WTF? He said one time it was a little hard to get into 4th but with a little pressure it went in ok. Then the next time he went to shift they were gone. The shifter just loosely goes from left to right like it's in neutral. Hopefully it's something relatively simple (yeah right) but has this happened to anyone else? We have 2100 miles on this thing and really count on it to be reliable since we make that Vegas to CA drive now and then and have a baby.

We bought it in Irvine and that's where he's heading so he'll take it in tomorrow morning. But man, what a pain in the ___.

:( I've never heard of this happening to anyone else. Keep us posted with what the service guys say. Hopefully it's something small and easy....you gotta love warranties.

well see we decided that theres just to many polar whites in town so we had to cull yours from the herd....no just kidding :wink:

but 2nd 4th and reverse are all "down" on the shifter wheras 1st, 3rd, 5th are all up. 'well what difference does that make?' you ask. when i switched from the stock to the trd sport shifter i learned a little(a very little). and there are two cables that actuate the gearbox. in a crude sense one cable is for the "up" gears and one is for the "down". my COMPLETELY unprofessional opinion is that one of these cables are loose or disconnected. i know this is an EXREMELY crude description and perhaps its even inaccurate but hey its a good guess right?

this seems a simple warranty issue and i doubt it will be anything big. so i wouldn't worry too much. but hey try and get the dealer to throw in a trd shifter for the hassle!

Im with lvxb Ide say the Down cable is the problem be it broke, come apart or what have you... Ide be happy to know its linkange of some nature and not tranny internals.. :twisted:

yeah its most likely the cable becuase our tranmissions are cross tranny's...
Cross tranny's are 135 up 24R down.. good luck keep us posted =)

yeah i was thinking that too. maybee they jacked the trd install and didn't reconnect something right. i would be more apt to think that then a factory mistake. but starnger things have happened

im not sure about in the scion bc i dont have mine yet but in my cavalier a couple of months ago i lost a couple of my gears burning out in the ice... i later was screwing with my clutch and taking my interior apart and i found that my shift wires were broken as in like ripped so i had to pay 150$ from the dealer to have some bought and shipped and i installed them myself in like 1hour or two hope that helped good luck

This is by no means a simple problem. When 2nd, 4th, and Reverse are lost, it can point to only one thing.......your articulating masticator has experienced severe thermalhydroangina. This, unfortunately, is not covered under warranty, and is highly expensive to repair. But, tell your dealer what I told you, and they'll get to work on it right away I'm sure. And if they ask you why you came to them about hot water induced "chest pain" in your jaw......they obviously have no idea what they're talking about.....and you should go to someone else. :roll:

I had consider a Johnson rod misalignment........but the 2, 4, reverse combo is far too telling. If it were a simple Johnson rod issue, a strange jostling would be felt, most likely up through the seat, accompanied by a distinct scratching noise......as the car tries to "adjust." In some cases, the Johnson rod can actually get placed inproperly, as there are two receivers. If the rod ends up in the wrong receiver, the car has a tendency to actually stick in reverse......to "pull out" of the problem.

Duh, you guys... it is obvious that the blinker fluid reservior sprung a leak, cracking the transmission case which let the magic smoke out.

*For those that don't get it, the magic smoke is inserted into electronic devices by the manufacturer and if it is allowed to escape the device stops working.

Sorry so late on the update! It was just a simple problem. It was a clip that holds the pin that holds the cable to the shifter...ok, hope that made sense, if it's doesn't, blame my husband. :wink:

It took a total of an hour, from drive-in to drive-out, to fix it. The service manager said he's never seen this particular problem before...not sure if he meant on an xB or ever.

I swear, we have the WORST luck with cars and freaky, unheard of things happening to them! :roll:
