If you want a catback, you're pretty limited... in fact, I think Borla and OBX are the only ones that make a proper catback.

Most other exhausts are axlebacks. If you wanted, you can get the axleback and have piping cut to convert it to catback.

A catback will also need to be welded, axlebacks bolt on.

That actually is not true. TRD makes a cat-back. I have had mine for a year and I love it. Only $200 at sparkstoyota.com

what about the greddy t-ic or whatever? they say it's a cat-back
welding won't be a problem because I could do it at school
I want to get headers eventually, maybe
I'm not sure where I'm going with my car
I just put an AEM cold air intake into it

You're wrong. That's an axleback exhaust. I had the same one back in the day.

It may say it's a catback, but if you look closely, it will probably say (rear section of catback exhaust)...

There are literally two or three true catback systems available... Borla, OBX, Jardine (which I've only seen available a couple times)

99% of exhausts available for the xB are axleback exhausts, doesn't matter what the descriptions say, that's what they are.

I've had the TRD, Precision Muffler and currently, the Greddy SP2.

I have an really nice Doug Thorley Jardine Catback. Got it for under 150 on ebay.

I will see if I can find it for you. It comes with clamps and bolts in case you can't weld it immediately.

See below. Good description. Not a bad price but you may do better on ebay.

Wait what is the difference between the two and why does my invoice call it a catback?

axle back is from rear axle to exhaust tip --- it is just muffler

cat back means --- catalytic converter
from the cat all the way to the exhaust tip is cat back

Resonator gets replaced.

You will see a little gain from an axleback because of the piping from the header back is still sorta restrictive. Catbacks change the pipe to about 2.5" instead of 1.75" (I think). Allowing for more exhaust flow from the catylatic converter which will reduce back pressure and that gives you more HP.

there's a parts dealer in my area that marks down performance stuff quite a bit so i could check with them on cost
they may not have it though considering when I went there 4 months ago they didn't even know what scion was
i was going to ask where the welding would need to be done but it would probably be self-explanatory in person eh?

There's also header-back... from the header all the way back. Supposedly, the most restrictive part of the exhaust (other than the header) is from the header collector to the cat... replacing that with bigger piping gives even better flow than replacing cat to axle.

Is the header back a custom thing?

Or do you buy it off the rack?

i had header back on my rx-7 and noticed a huge difference, the only problem that i had with that was, i had no back pressure and you really need a little bit of back pressure on rotary engines to keep them running smooth, not sure how the 1nzfe would do.

I don't think I'd go header back on my car. I don't want to do much custom fab if I don't have to
I'll look in to seeing if they have the jardine exhausts up here, I hope they do
I'd rather bolt it on then mess it up with amateur welding
