Bring this one back to life? Super Mods inquire within.

this thread deserves a jump start and none of that part II bs....
since the site is redone and can handle volume, I think it's fair to ask to revive it

since the site is redone and can handle volume, I think it's fair to ask to revive it
I'm just asking if this is possible since the issue that shut it down initially has been resolved....I can name a few present threads that work in the same manner that the BSer did...
so can we bring this back to life..?

i think its for bandwidth reason but im not sure.
some other would be able to answer that better than i can.
however, since we did switch over to Vbulletin, i think there are things that can be done.
like i said, im not really the best person to talk to about that stuff. I will send Ian and Tomas over here.

I understand the biggest problem with high-post-count threads is the tremendous "search" overhead whenever anyone goes to the thread.
The database (SQL) doesn't keep all posts for an individual thread in one place, it just stores them in the order they are made, so in order for the forum software to even display a thread it has to find all the posts related to it and stored in random locations, then sort them, and stack them for display.
Really large threads actually cause a measurable hit on site performance even if you are only going to look at the last post.
That's ONE reason why threads like the NY/NJ BS thread, with nearly 20,000 posts, got shut down before: A bunch of people constantly forcing the search/sort/display of that many posts would drag down site performance. The other, and even more serious problem with that sort of thread is that the administration and moderation features of the old site software couldn't handle 'em.
I don't know if the new software handles massive threads any better, I suspect it does. I'm not sure I'm in any rush to find out, though.
If someone were to convince me that bunches of people are going to go back and read all 20K posts in that thread on a regular basis, I MIGHT be convinced it was worthwhile to re-open it. Thing is, I doubt seriously that is the case. In fact, I doubt that a good argument for even saving all those posts could be made...
I'll bet if I chose to delete a couple thousand posts at random out of the thread, you wouldn't even be able to tell what was missing.
Honestly, is there actual value to saving 20K posts that no one will read again since they were mostly spur-of-the-moment posts that for the most part no longer have real meaning?
(One other thing I used to do to "save" the old software from going insane was to delete the first half of massive threads - let them get to 10K then wipe the first 5K and let 'em build up to 10K again, etc. Only reason people griped about that is that it cut down the number of posts in their total, and some folks seem to put much more stock in the quantity of their posts as opposed to the quality of their posts...)
I'm not convinced the thread needs to be reopened (I'm not even convinced it needs to be saved).

in that case just delete it....if there's no chance of it getting reopened then just delete it...like you said no need to keep 20k posts around....
thanks either way.
thanks either way.
^that won't work yellow, because we are all on on different times, but thanks.
