View Full Version : Taillight Question

I'm sure this has already been posted, but I can't find it...

Is there a taillight assembly I can buy that looks like this (see picture below), or is it only a DIY project? I have seen them referred to as OEM "red outs".

If they are an available item through a manufacturer, what's out there and where can I get them?

Thanks from a clueless toaster owner,
Alex

That's custom... there are two ways to do it. Ether pull the lens completely apart, mask what you don't want painted, then use a special translucent paint on the inside of the lens. The second (less preferred) way is to vinyl over the outside where you want.

Then, there's a third way... pay someone else to do it for you. There are quite a few local peeps in AZ last I remember.

The alternative... go aftermarket.

the first one is how i did it. BE CAREFUL, you can crack your tail light doing the screwdriver method without "baking" it, but it's not a big deal. just take it out (like 5 minutes, easy as pie), pop out the plastic, spray red in the areas you want red, and reverse.

Yeah as stated before, they are DIY only. I have mine done too.

Kind of a bad pic, but you get it.

I have mine done like that and they are sitting in the attic.
I should post to ebay.

It's not difficult if you heat them up enough to make it easy to open them. Mine cooled down and I got a couple cracks on the edges when I opened them.

There's also a vinyl overlay with that look that can be found on ebay. I've never seen it in person though. I did the bake n paint on mine.

Dude, there are like tons of scion owners in SoCal. Check the regional posts and you'll see quite a bit of activity.

It's pretty easy. Just take your time masking off what you don't want painted and use even coats.

Pick up a used set of stockies and use them, then if you goof up, you still have your OG's. The best way to learn this stuff is to just jump in and do it, using the DIY's and advice from guys here.

Your post was hard to read. Just curious; is English not your native language or was that posted through t9 text on a phone?

I'm sure if you want to open those aftermarket taillights, you could still mask and paint without any problems. However, since the lens has no faceting, you might be better of doing a vinyl overlay instead.

my buddy opened mine to paint the inside

its just dirty, but the paint is flawless and since its on the inside, it looks all even

haha im sorry. Yeah i was replying thru my phone. Anyways can i still open my tail lights and paint it and get the same result? Or do you think that it will look different?? Because i want to try it but i just want to make sure that i get tha same result. And if i do it what do i paint it with?? Can i use the red tint spray?? Or is it a different type of paint?

Thank god man... I was starting to worry. hahaha!

For the type of paint used, there's the red tint spray that works. Then there's "testors red taillight" paint that's used on model cars, but it works fantastic. I've heard Krylon also makes a red tint that works well.

haha im sorry for asking so many questions, because i havent done anything like this to my car and i dont want my first time doing this to turn into a horrible job, but this is what ive done to my tail lights. I bought a pre-cut smoked vinyl tint on ebay. i put it on myself. So i was planing to buy a red tint vinyl instead. Because im going for a JDM look for my box. So i went here to look for advices and this forum is very helpful. BUT it is kind of confusing how to do it. And i heard that if i put my lights in the oven and let it get hot. Theres alot of chances to crack the lenses and im scared to do it myself. SO what's your best advice for me? Should i get the vinyl tint instead or should i paint the lens? Because if i vinyl it, i dont think that i would get the result i want. And just wondering where can i get the paint?

you can get the paint at a hobby shop
