Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me. Just recently i have noticed that shifting from first to second is rough. Its not grinding, but, more of a clunk i guess. thats the best way i can describe it. it did it alot when it was cold (40 degrees to 55-degrees) and now that its warmer it seems better. when i drive for 5-10 miles its almost perfect. I am using redline mt90 and i have the nst bushings. i only have 19k on her. just to reiterate the sound and feel is not grinding like if you didnt use a clutch. Any ideas? i have read other posts and found that someone had a bad syncro. could that be what this is? Thanks in advance!

most likely the redline,i have a tc and did use redline also but gave me lots of problems i switched to eneos,smooth as butter

I'm running Quaker State Syncromesh in my Eclipse and it's an excellent upgrade oiver factory, but I haven't had any issues with the xB tranny yet -- still low miles and still running OE fluid.

I've tried Redline MT-90, Mobil-1, and now I'm trying Eneos.
Eneos is what I'm going to stay with.

I think that's the only one they offer. The dealer told me gl 4 or 5. So I think it's fine. Ordered yesterday so it will be here tomorrow. I will let you all know how it works.

Had the same problem with the mt-90 in cold weather. I dumped it and refilled with 2 quarts of mt-90 and 1 quart mtl and it made a big difference.

I shall see tomorrow. Can anyone confirm that gl-5 is ok for our tranny? I called the dealership and they said yes but alot of mechanics get info on the gen 1s

Check your owner's manual. If I remember correctly, it says GL-4 and GL-5 are compatible with our transmission.

there was a big write up awhile back about gl-4 being better for out tranny.. gl-5 was corrosive to our bearing... not a short period of time but over prob 10 years? but im not sure someone shine some light on this issue.

Same problem here. No bad grinding just a stiff shift from 1st to 2nd. Many posts on this issue so there is a problem, but dealer says no. MT-90 did not help. NST bushings here also. Want to try the eneos, whats the best site to purchase from?

I purchased from amazon. 9.99 a quart and free shipping. I opted for 2 day so I could do it this weekend. That was 15 bucks. So in all 45 bucks.

I test drove a manual 2010 today before I ordered my 2011. I was hell bent on a stick as thats all I have drove for 24 years. After test driving I decided to get an automatic. My '96 corolla shifts much better than the car I test drove. Didn't like the clutch or the way it shifted. I never thought I would ever get an auto over the manual. Wife couldn't believe it.

Yeah, I know just what you mean. I swear by driving standard over auto, but shifting in the xb is just different somehow. There doesn't seem to be a definitive shift point where you can feel it catch. It didn't sway me away from the 5spd though.

Well, I installed the eneos today and drove it around and it feels better. Not perfect but, better. I will see what happens when the motor and tranny is cold tomorrow.

it is a relief that many people feel the same about shifting from 1st to second.

I also tried redline MT-90 with a marginal improvement. I escalated the issue with SCION and the dealership checked it out and told me that "all scions are like that, it is a sportier feel. there is no problem with transmission at all"

on one of the threads, someone mentioned that the feel for scion xb shifter is different compared to another manual transmissions due to the positioning of shifter which is higher than most cars.

I am thinking of the axxtion short shifter and NST bushings as the last resort before I dump this car for something else.

So, are there problem reports from people with OE bushings as well? I've the OE bushings and OE fluid and OE shifter and so far I've experienced no issues (approaching 5K, so admitedly low miles).

I presume you're aware that just because something is aftermarket and from a known company doesn't necessarily mean it's an all-round better solution than OE -- right?

Sounds to me like you're confused between "shifter" action and "clutch" action. I suggest making sure you understand what's going on before you either buy any more parts or "dump" anything.
