dealer free oil change and overfill
Brought in the xd several mths ago for its first an oil change at 2758 miles on the od.
What got me curious to check the oil level was a rattle during engine starts. Not sure if its related though. I checked and looks like they put in a little over 1/2 quart to much. Dip stick was about 1/4 - 1/2 inch above the second dimple.
I checked the forum for capacities and it should be -with oil filter change: 4.4 US Quarts. I am guessing when they pumped in the oil from the lines they dialed in 5 quarts.
I have only driven it 1300 miles since the oil change so I doubt it caused any damage.
I have not driven since pulling out 1/2 quart from the dipstick tube.

Exactly correct, they dialed-in 5 QTs or that is what the dial is set at for all cars so they don't have to change the 'dial'.
Now search for how many times 'dealers' or any jiffy type oil place overfilled a crank case.
You are not soposed to check their 'work' because you might call it SABATOGE if you found out how much oil they add.
THEY JUST DON'T CARE.... go ahead and complain, they will do nothing differanrly. RIGHT MILLER TOYOTA of MANASSAS !!
Do it yourself because THEY JUST DON'T CARE !
A $40 oil change is not enough money to check a dip stick.

i agree. I as thinking 2 free oil changes to get out any loose machined materials in the engine prior too doing an oil change with good oil myself.
Lucky I had an oil extractor I could use to pull out the extra oil. Things have changed for level of service thats for sure.

hmmm... never had that issue. and i had several oil changes done on the 09 D and just got my second one on my 10 D.
I never heard these noises you speak of, but i'm going to check to make sure. thanks for the heads up.

I just went out to run an errand. No engine start up noise and the engine revved better.
I pulled out 14 ounces of oil (almost half quart) which brought the oil level down to just right under the second dimple on the dip stick.

Mine was overfilled from the factory. I never thought to check the oil, and around 2500 miles when I changed it I noticed it came out foamy. Oops.
At 5K miles I took it in for my free oil change. Not only did they overfill the crankcase, but they used 10W50 oil. When I complained they insisted that, no matter what the receipt said, they had used 0W20.
I took out the dipstick and sniffed the oil -- definitely conventional, and you can only make 0W-anything in synthetic. I called back, told them it was definitely wrong, and that my car wasn't running right. The engine noise had a different tone, I was getting slightly worse fuel economy (though that may have been because it was fall and the weather was cooling), and it had trouble starting when the temps got near freezing. The dealer outright didn't care. I haven't been back and I never will; I'm going to see how long I can do all the work on the car myself.

Since i took 1/2 quart out and oil level is at the top of the full dot the scion has been running fine. No strange start up noise. I am sure my oil was foaming as well - which is not good. Hopefully we did not do damage to our engines.
My fuel economy has come up a little as well (about 2 mpg).
Oil the dealer put into my car (on the receipt) showed 5w20. Some Dealers don't care thats for sure.
