i just bought a new dremel kit and decided to try and make something for my xa. so i decided to make a prototype wind splitter for my Xa from some a sheet of ABS plastic i had lying around the garage. I used some stainless steel turnbuckes for temporary rod supports until my APR rods i ordered come in. The only thing that sucks is that it isnt carbon fiber. But ill have o wait till i get enough dough. The splitter will look tons better with the APR rod supports.

is it gonna be fully adjustable???

phantomxa
02-21-2005, 09:25 PM
yeah it is adjustable. You can determine the angle of the splitter by lengthening the turnbuckle. But the APR rods have a more adjustment characteristics than the turnbuckles.

He intended to "JDM" them by painting the non-functional reflective parts of the headlights black...but I think he forgot to mask the functional reflective area...

How bad is the light ouptup? horrible or just crappy? I love the splitter, not all I need is a large sheet of plastic and a nice riviter.

thanks for the comments...i hate being such a poor college student but it gives me the oppotunity to try new things to my ride. By the way, my headlights only project 30% of the original output..its that crappy.

you know what would really be neat if you can do the adjustments from inside the car :!: :!: :!:

Just go cheap and buy a CF overlay sheet :)

Looks awesome, where do you get ahold of a sheet of ABS like that? How flexible is ABS?

Great craftsmanship

phantomxa

yeah a CF sheet is real expensive. i got the ABS plastic sheet from TAP plastics in Santa Clara, CA. But TAP is a nation wide retail store for all plastics and polymer materials for fabrication. There are dozens of kinds of plastic, vinyl, ABS, etc. The abs is flexible as a sheet but when i bolted it on it the lip became real stiff. ABS is really strong too.. I might consider actually using the carbon fiber look vinyl sheet on the splitter.

Do you think using plexiglass would work? It sounds like its close to ABS

03-04-2005, 04:02 PM
you mean fiberglass...?

Rally
03-05-2005, 05:54 AM
nah, that would definitely work. I mean plexiglass. Its a type of plastic...typically clear, but not always. Its rather stiff but has some give to it

phantomxa

thanks....pexiglass would work but the ABS is cheap . I paid like $30 for a piece 6'X2' that is the minimun size you would need

Cool, sounds good. I actually have a plexiglass shop right near me that gives me their scraps....so i can get some that size for free

Again, props on a great modification  And dont worry, i wont copy your style....my splitter is going on a non-scion

Nice look.
noob question though,
what exactly does the air splitter do?

dexter_5000
04-27-2006, 09:54 PM
What is a Wind Splitter?
A Wind Splitters is a protruding flat surface in the front of a car that is designed to decrease front end lift and exert downforce. By creating a high pressure area on top of the wind splitter, high pressure air flow is restricted to flow underneath a car. With low pressure below the car, the effect of lift is reduced and a driver can gain from the extra traction and control.
