0W20 to 5w20..horrible mpg?
So After my first free oil changes I decided to use 5w-20 royal purple (since they dont make a 0w20) I've noticed my mpg has taken a drastic hit.
Is this normal? Or should I switch back to 0w.
also what is better for the engine?

i been running 0w-20 for about 2 years now and its made a pretty big impact on mpg. its funny cause my last oil change i went cheaper than my usual $7.50 per quart of mobil 1 0w-20 (went with penzoil 5w-20) and i could totally feel the difference in acceleration. feels like the pedal is lighter and throttle reaction is better now that im back on the 0w-20. maybe its just a placebo type effect but im sticking with 0w-20. worth the extra money, plus it only takes like 15 mins to do it yourself and not pay someone for such a small job.

You really are looking at the wrong numbers. Look at the oil specs and the 100 celsius cst. Some 5w-30's have a lower pumping viscosity at 100c than a 5w-20. If you are worried about MPG's, find the lowest cst at 100C of a particular 20 or 30 weight, dont center on the 0 or 5, because the car warms up quickly.
I went from 0w-20 to 5w-30 and saw a couple of tenths, but nothing major. Im driving my car harder, so the protection to heat matters more to me than mpg's.

I think you guys are all nuts. 0-20,5-20,5-30,semi synthetic or full synthetic doesn't mean one bit of difference in day to day driving. Unless you live in the Sahara Desert or the North Pole or you are turbo charged, you will be lucky to see 1-2 tenths of a gallon difference. You will never notice any performance difference by using the butt dyno either. I have tried them all through every season for the past 30 years and never noiced any mpg or performance difference. That being said, I do think synthetic will help in LONG term reliablity. My Xb has seen every weight, blend and brand out there and I get 23.7 mpg no matter what.

While I agree you wont see much between weights and mpg's, thats not the only reason to choose a weight. If you drive your car normal, or have a lot of hwy miles, 0w-20/5w-20 is A-OK. If you like to drive the car a little harder, and live in a hot climate, go with 5w-30.
Dont base oil choices on mpg's.
