I have a 3GS that I bought last June but will be preordering and upgrading to a 32 GB iPhone 4 ASAP (yay for early upgrading!). Anyone else jumping in? If you are, what is it that you like most about it?

If you are not getting one - is there any one thing you think that it is missing that is keeping you from buying (besides being on AT&T)? I'm taking about the phone itself...

I have a 3G, had it since it came out, and The only thing i'm waiting for is the price drop of it. I'll let it be out for a couple months, let them drop the price a little, and fix some bugs, then I'm in.

Eh... the data plan thing sounds stupid, but if it helps me save a few $$, I'm OK with it. I've never gone over 600mb and my g/f has never gone over 800mb. I'll be getting on the 2 GB plan when I upgrade and will be switching her data plan over to that for her 3GS as well. If it saves us $10 combined, I'm all for it - though I can see how it would shaft heavy users. I'd like to see it at $20 for 2GB instead.

December was actually only a few days, as I was in the Caribbean for a few days, the Marshall Islands for 18 days, Hawaii for 3 days, and Vermont for 2 days. :lol:

The CEO of XM announced a while back that they won't be needing Stern or his outrageous demands, anymore to carry them with sales. He's getting a massive pay cut and he's not very thrilled about it.

I'm totally upgrading. My 3G's battery has seen better days (lasts like an hour of actual usage)

I don't have to pay the $18 upgrade either.

Preordering a black 32GB and probably using the 200MB plan (since I don't get a signal at work, my usage hasn't gone over 187MB in the past 7 months.

I use anywhere from 6-11gb per month of usage, so upgrading and moving to a capped data plan is not in my future. If I buy one outright can't I just take the sim out of my 3gs and have a working iphone4? my 3gs can't hold a charge to save its life, but i dont sweat it that much.

if your an existing at&t customer you dont have to get the 200mb or 2gb plan, you get to keep your unlimited data plan, the capped plans are only for new customers

My Android phone (Samsung Moment), even before the latest OS update, is still more functional than the new iPhone is looking to be... and so is my Sprint plan.

I never understood the whole "iPhone upgrade" craze, anyway; you essentially pay $200 every year to look forward to the next time you can pay $200? And for what? So you can have a phone that's on par with the rest of the industry? And on a service provider with laughably bad service? No thanks.

Oh, and last.fm is miles ahead of Pandora. I can listen to my entire music library through it at work, listen to it on my Android on the way home, and listen to it on my Xbox when I get there... and it's free. And even then, the full subscription is something like $3/month.

I stopped an honestly thought about it, I am probably going to wait, my 3gs is probably a year old, jailbroken with all the junk I already want, if I want to go good I can upgrade to the os4 update without some features, but to pay every year for a new iphone seems kind of stupid. and I use the sdfsdf out of mine.

Word of advice. Don't try to go to the AT&T store or Apple store. They just try to set you up using the apple website and because off the mass volume you get nothing. I was in the Apple store for 20 minutes and everyone was on a Macbook trying the site. Everyone failed. Lol.

I got told by the lady at the att store when i preordered that it was faster to have it mailed to me than the store, any truth in that, she said tomorrow I could call and we could change from mail to store, but she said something like she doesnt know how much the store has or some ya ya ya.

I went to AT&T after work today, waited in line for about 35-40 minutes. Would've been way faster if the douchebag sales guy wasn't trying SO HARD to nail the girl who just wanted a phone. It went on for half hour easy, he kept showing her his phone and talking about how cool it was and all that.

When you reserved your phone online, did you do it for in store pick up? I did and I didn't have to pay or give credit card info. I just got a "See you at the store." and it asked me to bring my photo ID. I feel like if I don't get to the store by 7am they'll sell the phone to someone else.

Good luck ordering one. Back to the original question, besides the obvious one answered in the Gizmondo article linked earlier,

"Without a doubt, the fact you must be on AT&T to use an iPhone is the single-most compelling reason to avoid buying an iPhone 4."

I have a standard 3G that still has good battery performance, so I see no compelling reason to upgrade. The 3G gets the new iOS w/ multitasking, the front camera is pointless unless you're talking to another person on the 4, and the price is pretty high when a new 3GS is $99. For the wow / showoff factor / attracting the ladies, onlookers aren't going to know / care if it's a 3G, 3GS or 4.

Probably the biggest reason I won't upgrade yet though is no 4G support. I'm not getting locked into a previous-gen network tranceiver only to wind up like the original iPhone owners, stuck with a slow phone incompatible with new network standards. You know next June Apple will announce the 4G, and it will be just 7 months after I'm able to upgrade.

Do like the tethering option now without having to jailbreak though. Hopefully they let it legally on the 3G with the old unlimited data plan. Also, give me Google Navigation already, or another turn-by-turn GPS program that's actually cheaper than going out and buying a stand-alone Garmin. Right now pretty nice ones are $119. How is a GPS receiver and some software-only twice that for the Tom Tom iPhone app?

If it was compatible with Verizon, I would immediately buy one when my contract is up in November. I could deal with no 4G if it's on a faster overall network with better coverage.

Well you know what transferring contacts is obviously lol. Porting is the process of retaining a number established with another carrier over to the new carrier. In my case it would involve porting 12 numbers from Verizon to AT&T. I wish I could port only 1.

Exactly, using backgrounder or whatever the app is called that can send apps to the background on a jailbroken iPhone causes the 3G to run sluggish as hell.

You'll be waiting for awhile, LTE won't happen on AT&T until late 2011 not to mention the iPhone 4 doesn't even support LTE nor will it. It will take an upgrade to a newer iPhone, probably Summer of 2011 or 2012, that will support the LTE frequencies.

I assume that's the precise reason they didn't name it 4G, they didn't want people to assume it was 4G capable or 4G ready. Verizon will be LTE but on a different frequency so who knows if the next iPhone will have the radio for Verizon.

It was rumored that AT&T exclusivity contract expired early this year but later some documents emerged that shows AT&T inked a 5 yr exclusivity deal which would make the end date 2012, I would take that with a grain of salt.

For the first time, that I recall, AT&T is offering early upgrades to iPhone owners to renew those 2 yr contracts and lock them in. This leads me to believe that exclusivity is over and Apple is working with another carrier either T-Mobile or Verizon. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an iPhone 4 released on another carrier in the US before the year ends.

Okay, multi-tasking on the iphone 4 is completely superior to jailbroken backgrounding. It runs smoother, you have more options, you can run more programs...it's awesome. If you're using Pandora and you open another app, say iBook, you don't need to back out of iBook to change the song. Just double tap the home button, swipe the multi-task bar and there are all the Pandora controls.

AT&T lied to me today. I was given a tracking number and when UPS said it was delivered to the AT&T store and signed for, I called them.

They proceeded to tell me that they haven't received any phones. I kept pushing it saying they gave me a tracking number and that they're just straight up lying.

Long story short, the store manager will be personally handing me my phone at 8AM tomorrow morning. LOL

That's why I ordered mine from Apple directly, and got it shipped to my house. I didn't want to deal with the bull____ from AT&T or the lines tomorrow.

a friend has an evo at work, 4G isnt that great in our city so its a tie. the 8mp camera is nice but its still a phone. if you want better pics, get a real camera.

wont be upgrading. I have my XSI attached to my hip and the 3gs will do now that I can multitask . AT&T ____ed me off by taking me off my family plan and onto my own plan and than she said they didnt actually preorder my phone but I can wait in line when they are in stock. Finally got my account canceled and added back to my family plan. They tried to tell me I had to pay 18$ transfer fee both times.

I had to go through AT&T to break off from my family plan so I could keep my number and unlimited data, otherwise Apple to my door ftw. I've been mad with AT&Ts service, they turned the service/data off to my phone and said I ran up a 400$ data bill in the british virgin islands, after filing a appeal to it they call back 3 weeks later and say the charge was never there or some BS. AT&T is the iphone deal breaker to me.

Megapixels mean absolutely nothing. By saying it's better because it has more MP, means you're saying the EVO camera is better than a Nikon D40. And 4G is non-existent outside of major cities.

Saw this on Gizmondo but thought it might just be them being ____ed off about the search and seizure and ban from WDC after they paid for an early stolen iPhone. After reading about them turning off all the displays at CES, including during presentations, I'll lost pretty much all respect for them.

If the reception issue is real, would love to know what the software fix is. Seems like this is a hardware issue, i.e. antenna in the metal band, hand over the band. Let's hope it's not a non-conductive wrapper like the Wii remote protector.

The antenna thing does happen if you do it just like they show in the videos - but is that a "real world usage" example? Not to mention I have a bumper on order so it won't matter anyway.

Incorrect, the iPhone 4 does not have an LTE frequency radio (hardware).

It will take an upgrade to a newer iPhone, probably Summer of 2011 or 2012, that will support the LTE frequencies.

It isn't just a software update and bam hello 4G.

Megapixels mean absolutely nothing. By saying it's better because it has more MP, means you're saying the EVO camera is better than a Nikon D40. And 4G is non-existent outside of major cities.

picked up a Blackberry 9700 for 250. I know ill regret it but the BB is a solid phone. Web browsing is way better on iphone . maybe ill have to reevaluate later..

There are various discounts out there for different amounts. I would imagine you should get a decent military discount though. My work one is only like 10 or 12%. If even that. But every little bit helps...

I've heard of that from someone else... likely a bad device. Doubt they'll have a problem swapping it.

Easiest fix though may just be to pop the SIM out and insert it again.

I actually switched my plan (and the g/f's) from the unlimited to 2gb. Neither of us are ever even near 1GB... so I'd rather save the $10+ per month on the two plans. Actually it worked out to be around $15 savings (taxes?). My bill for 2 iPhone was $161 but now is $145 after switching both data plans.

Then again if you really do use a LOT of data, I can see how it would totally blow to not have unlimited anymore. You'd think they'd still offer it but just charge a little more. $35? $40? I don't know.

I'm with Yanki, if you're not going to get the 4, you might as well just buy the 2G. The difference between the 3GS and 4 is massive. Once you get used to the screen, all other mobile devices look like garbage, the camera is great as I've shown before, it has twice the memory so it can handle multitasking better, the battery life is significantly better, the speakers are better...etc etc.

i know what you mean its feels so cool in your hand but then again i dont want to damage it.

I actually dislike the way it feels without a case. Compared to my 3G, I just couldn't get a comfortable feeling while playing games with it, the edges are too sharp. With a bumper however, it feels great.

i wish i got white, couldnt find it anywhere and didnt want to go any longer without a case. they only had blue so i got it. my friend is giving me his black one. the blue is growing on me, i wish it was darker.

You don't want white. I've seen the white bumpers and after 1 week of use, they're no longer white.

I had bought an orange bumper when I ordered the phone. It arrived a couple weeks ago just before they announced the free bumper/case crap. Hated it. Feels like ____. Fits loose and is half rubber and half hard plastic. Fail.

So I got my refund for it but still didn't use it. I figured eBay market was dead for them since Apple was giving everyone cases... not so much. Sold it for $40 on eBay a couple days later (ya, it was $30 new).

So I basically got $40 for free since I had been refunded for the bumper from Apple. Win.

No I haven't. I'm planning for the iP4, but have read that AT&T can't fully support the 4. So I was going to look into getting a 3gS at a cheap cost so I wouldn't be locked in a contract with AT&T until they could fully support the 4G network. Figured by that time another iPhone will have came out or be coming out soon enough.

what can they not support? its not running on 4G and whether you buy the 4 or 3GS, your still locked in a 2yr contract.

The iPhone 4 is not 4G as in 4th generation of wireless network (like the EVO). It is just the 4th generation of iPhone. So AT&T supports it just fine... well, just fine for AT&T anyway. :)

And the 3GS is cheaper, but still is on contract unless you nab one off of eBay or something. I sold my 3GS for $275 on eBay when I got my iP4. That was for the 16GB... so expect prices in that neighborhood if you buy outright - only then would you not have a contract.

as much as i loved my 3GS for the year i had it over my original iPhone before and my moms 3G (painfully slow), there's no doubt knowing now how much better the 4 is over all of the iPhones that its the obvious choice. being its the newest of the pack, the 4 is the best choice. if money is an object, save the extra $100 or whatever more you need for the 4. its on a whole different level than the 3GS now. i sold my 16GB 3GS for $290 a couple of weeks ago.

ive convinced 3 people from work who for whatever dumb reason, they just bought the 3GS from att all during this past week. idk if att's pushing the 3GS more than the 4 because they have non in stock but i told them to return it. after playing with mine, they've done so and have been put on a waiting list and should get their iPhone 4 sometime next week.

oh no i wasn't going to go threw AT&T for a new 3gS, at that rate you may as well get the 4. I saw that the 3gS still had a 2-year contract on it an that cancelled out that option. I also looked at eBay to see what they were going for and at that price point I'd go with the 4 as well. Now if I somehow come across a 3gS for $100 w/o contract I'll give it serious thought into to picking it up; doubt that will arise though. I won't be able to get it until late this year/early next so I have time.

Android is cool and all, but they still have ZERO hardware I'm interested in. I have quite a few friends with Android phones and not a single one is appealing to me.

And as worthless as you may think it is (have you ever had an iPhone or really used one?), it does everything I need it to and more. I would typically refer to that as the complete opposite of worthless.

has anybody had problems with the home button, sometimes when im using an app and click on the home button it wont work, it takes a couple of clicks to go back to the home screen

carbon, I read with people tethering on the BB9700 that something with proxy and ips makes mobile tethering web test inaccurate. Don't know if it's same for iphone4, either way isn't tethering nice? I had it back when I was in virgin islands and the whole island has wifi, but it was like 15 bucks for 1 night, while everyone was mad about paying I just whipped out the iphone.

I get 4.1-4.3Mb/s when doing a speedtest over 3G on my phone, and I was consistently getting 3.2-3.7Mb/s when doing the speedtest on my laptop, while tethered to my 3G. So it seems like it's relatively close.

any apps you recommend? I had my 3gs jailbroken about a year ago but didn't really go past a custom theme? Pretty happy with the 9700, but I miss touchscreen so I might pick up a iphone 4 without contract

MyWi 4.0, My3G, Installulous, Rock, Winterboard, SBsettings, LockInfo...and that's about it off the top of my head. I mostly use the jailbreak to get free apps. :lol:
