View Full Version : Front struts
silkywilson 02-04-2004, 07:39 PM Ok is it just me or in every how to I see no one is using a spring compressor to pull the top hat off of the struts.. is ther that little presure on the hat? I understand with lowerd springs there would be less pressure but the stock ones have to have quite a bit and I would expect to loose the arm holding the impact wrench when that nut came loose. let me know Im doing springs early next week.
scionara 02-04-2004, 07:45 PM Not much spring tension so you don't have to worry about the spring flying out @ 100 mph and damaging something nearby but then again just be safe (ask Randode about his experience on this).
bBted 02-04-2004, 07:50 PM dont worry...they didnt compress the springs that much...
just do it between two tires...
its_ikon 02-04-2004, 07:52 PM go rent a spring compressor and be safe. i have heard a lot of bad stories.
randode 02-04-2004, 08:54 PM the scion springs are not under much pressure. Just lay the strut on the gound with your foot on it, and spin the nut off the top with the impact gun. It will pop maybe an inch or two. Its really not that big of a deal since the spring and hat are going to go towards the impact gun, and the strut is going to go the other way. It "might" be dangerous if the strut was standing up on the ground and you blast the nut off. Then it will probably take off your nose. Ive done 19 installs as of this writing, and im still alive. (typing this from a hospital bed). :D

silkywilson 02-05-2004, 02:09 AM thanks guys for all the info I figure if I stand on the spring at the end where the hat is the strut will pop out the other side.. Im gonna point it at my neighbor..lol I have in the past done some "Hairy" things... before you take the strut out of the car compress it by jacking under the control arm.. then use heavy duty zip ties.. 4 of them and strap them as a friend bounces on the bumper a little...yea not the safest idea.. and at some point you have to take those zip ties off.. now thats fun you dont wanna leave a compressed spring thats held with zip ties laying around your garage do ya?
scionspecialistvegas 02-06-2004, 07:05 PM it is easy to do, to pop the hat, Randy's how is great, we five scion in my Driveway. aim the hat at a tire there not that much pressure. Bill
kdanie 02-06-2004, 10:19 PM I just loosend the nuts before removing the struts then pushed down on the hat as my wife finished removing the nut. I'm a big guy so it was no problem. This is the only car I would try it on. When I put Eibachs on my mini van it could have killed me without spring compressors!
I agree though, a wife in the garage can be VERY scarry!

Jester 02-06-2004, 10:31 PM Here's a tip...
Wrap the whole thing in a sheet and tie it up to make sure it's snug and won't open. Then, cut a whole just enough to unscrew the bolt on the top. Then, all you have to do is keep unscrewing until it pops. That way it will pop off in the sheet... :D
randode 02-06-2004, 11:52 PM you guys are really making too big a deal out of it. ive done 19 scions. its no big deal.

I wrapped mine in sheets, then I used tie downs, then I put it up to my tire while I stood on it....all the time, I was wearing a bullet proof vest and a full face helmet.....still scared me!
(j/k)
Randy's right.it's no big deal.
scionspecialistvegas 02-07-2004, 12:18 AM This is not that bad. It just not as bad as you think, on lowering day here, we had nieghbors, kids and the vegas crew here. safety first but it aint that bad. Bill

That's what I normal do.
People, be smart about it.. Don't stare at the nut and think nothing is going to happen. Don't point the nut at any living creature or anything of value. Be smart about it, wrap it, point it else where, its simple.
