Default banging issue NEW failed steering rack

Hello all
I replaced the clutch about three weeks ago and since then under moderate acceleration i am getting a banging / clunking sound in first , second, and third gear.

I have two ideas as to the issue

1. CV joints
2. Motor mounts

FYI the car is at 93K, and I have checked all the bolts touched 3 + times

Any ideas suggestions etc

The one thing I am worried about and it is a long shot is backlash / play in the differential, transmission

Is there a difference in the clutch (performance of some sort) or is it OE?

So you only get the noise when you first apply torque to the engine (accelerate or decelerate via throttle). Yes, does sound like motor mount, or else loose bell housing bolts, but you said they're tight -- to spec?

The bolts were done to spec

As of right now the car is at the dealership to find out what the problem is
Then I will take it from there

Got my fingers crossed for a broken MM

So the outcome

1 loose bolt for the rear motor mount

2 the steering rack is bad due to the accident

950.00 for a new rack not including labor

Shoot, I forgot about this post:

8. repair door
Your left front wheel was damaged in the accident, and that means the
rack could likely be damaged too !

Did you mention any pulling or steering play issues? I don't recall.

ToyotaPartsZone.com shows the steering gear for $677.04.

No play issues even while driving it to the shop last night
However you can feel the drivers side wheel in a right hand turn as it turns on it's own in relation to the steering wheel (this has gotten much worse as I was driving last night.)

Car is at the auto body shop as I type and wating for the insurance ajuster
(the only good news out of this is I have my in laws bmw Z4 )

The ins wants to change the bearing and hub assembly first, Then if that has no effect change out the rack

Seems odd -- if there was play in the steering, that doesn't suggest bearing and/or hub, that suggests the rack assembly, or maybe seriously wasted ball joints, but the car's too young for that. A noise would be suggestive of bearing and/or hub and/or CVJ. Guess they ignored likelihood considerations and just went for cheapest first.

What happened to you seems like an excellent argument for having collision insurance!

I am very glad to have full coverage

However This kind of course of action was why I wanted the car totaled
in the first place

Ins co said 2500.00 to fix
Body shop found some things
there price 2900.00
I had to accept that however it still seemed low being as the car was hit right on the axle
so
2900.00 First Repair
300.00 Bearing and hub
950.00 Rack
1000.00 Low app install
-----------
5150.00

Add in 10+ days car rental @ 40.00 per day
5550.00

car at the time when it was hit was only worth at best 9K really closer to 8K

and coming in on 65% of the value at 9K

I just want to be done with this mess

The car rental is a 2009 Hyundai Sonata POS no way is this close to a Camry I would say it's closer to a Corrola

Looking forward to success with replacement of the steering mechanism. Look on the bright side, you're almost there !

got the car back and surprise surprise I still have banging

The body shop feels that's it is the struts and or the CV joints and both would be a wear and tear item.

So now I have to swap the shocks and see what happens
If i continue to have an issue after that then bring it back again

I hate the POS car and the insurance co is getting the boot after this mess

Thinking about fixing the noise then selling the car

I trust the steering play is now gone? So, what's still there is the banging that was never there until you changed the clutch -- yes? Do these mechanics ever test drive the vehicles they "repair"?

told the ins co and the body shop to do whatever it takes to fix the issue.
I am on vacation all next week so that ought to be plenty of time to mess with it. I got fingers..... and everything else crossed possible that they get to the bottom of this mess.

hope they find your problem, and yeah, after all that problems the least you want is to stay with it
