Default Shifter Cable problem Need help please!

ok i have a 08 scion xb, i just got done replacing the clutch today, i put the shifter cables back on and when i hopped in my car to check it out, the stick shift was way off to the upper right of the shifter box... if that makes any sense like 1st gear would be where 3rd gear is, it just didnt feel right, the shifter didnt feel as crisp when it was stock, theres too much freeplay in it. im sure i didnt install it correctly, and im having trouble putting the safety clips back on to. i should have taken pictures b4 taking the cables apart. its frustrating , let me know if im not clear, any help or illustrations would be greatly appreciated, Thank You

The cables should look like this at the transmission:

The front cable delivers fore/aft shift motion, the rear delivers left/right).
