I know this has probably been discussed before, but I can not find a thread. 1 simple question. I want to paint my engine cover, but I'm not sure if I need to use Hi heat paint or if I can get away with some regular paint. Hi heat doesn't come in the right colors. Also, if hi heat is required, could I get away with regular paint with a hi heat clear coat?

Most people haven't used Hi Heat paint and haven't had trouble. You are safe.

I color matched mine BCP. I used the same paint that is on the outside of the car and no problems at all. Looks like it did the day I did it.

Anyone know if there are aftermarket touchup paint in the spray cans available for the Scion colors? I am looking for TCM.

Goto any paint shop. Purchase some plastic clear spray inhibitor. Wait 30minutes Buy some primer, wait 30 minute prefer gray. Buy your color of choice. Spray every 45minutes or so. After a few hours clear coat it, several coats, alot of coats!!!! Heat paint is not needed. As when your driving the heat is flushed throughout the engine bay. Don't worry about that. Time is key, go slow take your time do not rush this, never rush painting anything on your car. 8 hour max here reinstall and ahhhh color!!!

I haven't been able to find Scion colors in like duplicolor or such. The best advice would be to find a paint store that puts Scion paint in a spray can. May cost a little more but is alot cheaper than buying a whole quart plus the activator ,reducer plus all the other stuff to spray one piece

I had my body shop paint it to match my car using the same paint he used on my car. Its 100% exact color match!

Make sure you degrease the cover thoroughly, and you may want to scuuf it a bit so the paint has something to adhere to.

Out here in the Bay Area, CA, there are paint shops that sell OEM colors in 20 ounce spray cans for under $20.00. They are great for doing small jobs like eyelids, and engine covers.

I painted mine with Krylon Fusion paint for plastic. All I did was lightly sand and clean with reducer. No primer. Looks great and has stayed on fine. Mine is bright Red. Cost like $7.95

I found some duplicolor at Wal-Mart that is almost an exact match to TCM. Close enough that you won't be able to see a difference. I'm going to use that and see how it ends up. I also bought some auto clear coat spray. We'll see how it turns out. I'll post pics when I'm done. I put the first coat on tonight.

That's my goal. I'm painting the cover TCM and the vvt-i and logo ultra flat black. I'm painting the letters first without masking and then taping over them when dry and painting the rest of the cover. We'll see how that turns out.

Some dude here in Orlando with a Camo xB did a Camo paint yellow/green/white blend. Came out pretty good for a DIY.

I suck at painting so I just got a CF engine dress up cover.
Good luck.

I think it would be a lot easier to paint the whole thing TCM, and then tape off around the letters... taping over the letters and especially the logo might be more difficult... but taping around them would be fairly easy.

Just my opinion, I've never done painting before... but from what I've seen that would be the way I went.

Ijust put some scotch tape over the letters and then used an exacto to cut the excess tape off. Then paint right over that. wait for the paint to dry and peal the tape off. Voila the letters are a different color than the rest.

Believe it or not, I used to spray paint for a living.

The best way is to tape off the letters using any low adhesive tape of your choice and an exacto knife. The problem I have found is that you need to hard sand and probably primer before painting. I started with a light sanding and no primer. I ended up peeling off the paint on the letters when removing the tape, and screwed it all up. Now I'm gonna go back to a hard sand and primer then see how the cookie crumbles.

I had no clue that NAPA did that kind of stuff. So you just drove up to the napa auto parts store and said, I want my engine cover to match my car?

I'll ditto that. You can't buy touch up in a spray can from Scion. Most NAPA stores can match your color and put it in a spray can for about $10 a can. Bring them your paint code and they should be able to do it.

I didn't sand it at all. Just did about 3-4 light coats. Worked great. When I finally clean up my car I will post some pics in my prof.
