View Full Version : Volant Performance cold air intake
First of all let me say that I'm not trying to sell anything here, I would just like to get an opinion and comments on this future tC mod. I'm currently working with Volant Performance on making a cold air intake for our cars, the owner has already giving the go ahead on this, just wanted to see what interest there would be for this product. Here is an email from one of the representatives: "Just to let you we have already made the scion XB and it is shipping now. That price is about 300.00 It is a totally enclosed box with a polished aluminum lid. The performance has only been measured by the seat of the pants. The 70+ kits that have gone out are only receiving good reviews. I have no way of knowing how much HP a kit will make before it is finished. Let the forum know that we do not sell direct. So what I can do is essentially run this as a limited direct item while we are doing the R&D and dynos. This way our customers will not get upset. I can probably only sell 60 kit direct. ( Only on the tc though not the XB that is already to the market)". Here's what the xB one looks like: http://www.volantperformance.com/pdetail.asp?ID=326, of course the one for the tC will look and be set up differently, I'm hoping that the whole process will only take about 2 months. Please post your comments and interest towers this future cold air intake, thanks.
shuttlegoosecock 02-28-2005, 11:15 PM i like the looks of those intakes, its a new look, i kinda like it
Hudnut 03-01-2005, 12:21 AM I give them thumbs up for an inovative idea. I'm currious how the tC setup will be routed. how does it sound on the xB?
wOoOzZy 03-01-2005, 12:44 AM Can you post a before/after dyno from an xB?
KINGxOFxSKA 03-01-2005, 01:09 AM intersting...
franktherank 03-01-2005, 01:14 AM looks restrictive to me, and 300 bones? sheesh
For $300 that better be a damn good lookin and VERY functional intake with real dyno-proven results! That's a lot of money to drop on a metal tube and a cone filter.

Its not metal :P which is the one of best aspects of it since it will be less prone to heat soak. Regardless, point taken, but you'll be paying around $300 for Weapon Rs (after CC's sale ends) or AEMs intake (which are metal).

Not sure how it sounds on the xB, I've never seen or heard it.

I'll contact them tomorrow and see if I can get them to send it to me.

We won't know until its done and dyno and they haven't priced it yet, that price is for the xB only. Hopefully they'll keep the price competative when its realeased.

That's excatly what I'm hoping to avoid with this intake "heat soak", good point.
Lonely_Raven 03-01-2005, 03:28 AM Price is harsh, but for the money, I'd really like to see the
dyno first.

Of course, I would too.
phatfront 03-02-2005, 09:25 PM Volant is quality stuff. Anyone out in the accessory world knows the name, they've been around for a while, and I've personally always liked there stuff (a step above K&N's products). I'd like to see the intake once completed too.
Thrawn 04-14-2005, 06:38 PM I'm bringing this back from the dead to see if there are any updates. I'm really looking forward to this intake.
Diluvium 04-14-2005, 06:46 PM i just looked at the CIVIC volant kit and it only gives 5hp gains....
just like any other aftermarket intakes
lootyman 04-14-2005, 06:58 PM right on, volant is quality.
i had one in my toyota tundra and loved it.
like any CAI, it's not gonna make 10-20 HP. none will for a 2.4L.
their materials and design lend themselves to a true cold air setup. when you're done baking a pizza, you don't grab the metal pan with a sheet of aluminum foil do ya? heatsoak sucks.
o, and they all have an air box. why stick an open cone in your flaming hot engine compartment?
i bet it'll be one of the better products for intake mods.
phatfront 04-14-2005, 08:01 PM well If I wasn't leaning towards forced Induction I'd get one. In fact it's probably the only CAI I'd get.
what's the ETA on the release for the TC Volant intake?
lootyman 04-14-2005, 08:14 PM me too phattie.
im holding out for the greddy release. how bout you?
phatfront 04-14-2005, 08:34 PM not sure.. I'd like to see the results of ZPI's 16g setup. I like the fact that it spools faster. However I'm sure Greddy will use the tried and true t3/t4 hybrid in there setup, which is more familiar. a very strong bearing turbo..
Have you heard of a release date from Trust?

That's a good gain for a civic. I remember everyone dyno-ing about a 2-4whp gain with almost all of the intakes on the market. This was on 01+ Civics though. The K&N FIPK2 (one of the best out there) dyno'd about a 3.9whp gain.
TheScionicMan 04-14-2005, 08:47 PM I've seen one on an xB and was less than impressed. There's very little difference from where this and the stock airbox pull air, the "Carbon Fiber Look" top doesn't even look like Fake CF, much less real CF and the price doesn't seem to justify the unproven gains it gives. If people can afford to take their personal cars to a dyno, couldn't a company afford that or sponsor someone and ask them to do it? Seems odd to me. I could see it if it looked really nice or performed really well but what is the advantages that justify the price.
How does plastic and aluminum compare with heat soak? My CAi is always cool to the touch. It seems like having that much plastic sitting right next to the engine and back into the bay more would possibly promote more heat than it would repel...
lootyman 04-15-2005, 03:33 PM right on with the CF look. i would never show it off to my buddies as such.
im not sure why you think plastic would contribute to heat more than metal tubing, though. everything about their material is less conductive than metal. it only makes sense that the air will be cooler than in a metal tube.
in the grand scheme, we're just spiltting hairs though. the seat dyno would show no difference between the two. and after all, isn't that what its all about! :P
about the turbos, i havent been watching closely. mainly because i dont have the money (why torture myself) and i want the market to have a little time for R&D. sounds like you're up on it though. what are your favorites so far?
solotc 04-15-2005, 03:44 PM yea...heat always moves from hot to cold....metal is a heat conductor...thats why it always feels so cool...its draining the heat from ur body...or something similar to that. ive always wondered why cai's were made out of metal...then everyone complains about heat soak...i'm very interested in this....very curious about dynos
metalranger33 04-15-2005, 03:54 PM looks like the stock setup just a lil more free flowing...ill wait for the dynos, my weapon r seems way more free flowing than that
