My friend has 2- 15" subs...Turned them up so I could hear them....Good God!...Damn I don't have any words for LOUD! I thought my internal organs had detached from the vibration!... No kidding..My lungs, guts, liver all fell off their branches!!! I think the sound meter broke ...All I can say is "IT's LOUD!"..

loud
Pioneer Electronics made sound pressure level (SPL) history at the 2003 dB Drag Finals held October 26 in Nashville with its Premier TS-W5000SPL subwoofer. Scott Owens, owner of Edge Audio in Phoenix, used nine Premier TS-W5000SPL 12-inch subwoofers in his 2002 Ford F-250 SPL truck to win in the Extreme 9+ category with 173.3 decibels, establish the SPL world record in the category with 172.2 decibels and defeat top SPL competitors in the “death match” competition with an average decibel level of 166.8.

One of my freinds old vehicles before he crushed it had a heart monitor inside so that he didn't make his heart jump beats, i would say that is almost pushing to loud, but then again you can never have it too loud.

A friend of mine had a Cherokee that he got sponsored by CarTunes and they hooked him up with 6 AudioBahn 12" subs in a box that was welded to his frame. That thing his so hard!

I had 4 12" Kickers in the back of my Geo Metro. No room for backseat, couldn't lean the front seats back, but it was pretty loud. I never measured the SPL, but the windows and windshield used to bend when the bass hit.

I'm just going to put two 12" Punch Pro subs in my xB. I'm too old for my eyeballs to rattle every time my subs kick (like they did in the Geo).

Where I used to live we had a private club that was a true 20,000 watt sound system inclusive od 32 18's in folded horn bass bins ans 26 EV LM 12's..they put 110w@1m and TAD tweeter etc.. All powered by Ashley power amps..that was bad a$$ and very very loud.....this was also his sound reinforcement demo room.......

Yea, I had to weld my hatch shut on my Geo because Dynamat just wouldn't keep it from rattling.

i find this........anything above a 142dB is pretty good.....147 is loud......153+ is insane.......i think anything above 155dB is capable of stopping the human heart.....and maybe something around 163 is capable of causing a bowel movement.......I'm not sure on those numbers...but that sounds about right........oh, also, once you get past a certain dB -i think around157- every +3dB is the equivalent to doubling the volume to your ears.....meaning audibly, it's twice as loud.......just a little info....

last side note: i had a single 12" Fosgate Punch HX2 wired at 1 ohm and a sony xplod 1000 watt amp at 1 ohm.....i designed and built a box that produced a 150.4dB in a first gen. eclipse........ best thing about it was....it only cost me $250 for the setup......100 for amp...100 for sub...and 50 for MDF......

Post subject: When is LOUD, loud?

When your hearing can be damaged. But you might not be aware of it until its too late. Be careful and use common sense, you will not be young forever..

Advice from an old fart who attended too many Led Zepplin concerts. Be careful out there.

I am not sure how many dB my 2 12" get up to, but my whole car shakes. lol I have to wear ear plugs if I turn it up to about 33%. The windshield wiper in the back tends to jump up and down. I have never tried turning it up past 50%, because my front speakers start to crackle, and I am sorry but it is just way too loud. The funny thing is it is just 2 12" with 1500 Watts pushed to them. You wouldn't think they would be that loud.

..oh, also, once you get past a certain dB -i think around157- every +3dB is the equivalent to doubling the volume to your ears.....meaning audibly, it's twice as loud......

That's not correct. For every +3dB in volume you want to go, you need to double the power. So if a 200W amp and speakers puts out 100dB, you'd need a 400W amp to put out 103dB. To double the volume, you'd need to increase the dB by 6, and you'd need quadruple the power.

If I remember correctly, if you wanted to find out how much louder a 700 watt amp would be than a 200 watt amp, you can get the answer in dB by this equation:

10 log X (wattage of amp A/wattage of amp B)

That means the 700 watt amp would be about 5 1/2 decibels louder than the 200 watt amp, or almost twice as loud.

Loud can also be bad; just ask Pete Townsend how bad. He'll answer you if he can hear beyond the constant ringing in his ears.

I once saw TIN MACHINE, and stood RIGHT by the speakers. Could not hear beyond the ringing for days. I think I may have damaged something.

I have an Eclipse 10" in a 2.5cu/ft w/ a 4" port that is 32" long....3dB down is around 23Hz ran by a 831Watt MTX class D... Doesnt have all the punch alot of these systems have (like my friend 2x12") but it can sure do some LOW notes... ALOT better than alot of systems i hear.... some nice bass CDs can make a slighty cracked window in my box, flex bad! almost seems like it could break.... Mirrors are way beyond blurry, Rear whiper does the mexican hat dance, and it can deff pull the breath out of you.... Everyone that gets in asks how many 12" i have.... i tell them a 10" and they are like "damn where do you fit them all?" i just reply w/ "i only got 1!" I like it, it turns some heads, enough to make everyday driving a lil more fun..... anything more, all pazzaz! If soon i get some money.... i might go for the 2x15" Eclipse titaniums.... but where am i going to get 6,000Watts of power from? :-P

I tend to believe he does not have 54000 watts true RMS....however 178 db is strong.....I think maybe he has power compression if really has the kind of power...that is one bada$$ set up though

the loudest car I have ever sat in was an older rx-7 with 4 15in Cerwin Vega Strokers in it. There was a wall behind the front seats and the whole hatch was basically the box. You had a hard time breathing when you sat in it and you could not see straight.

Start counting... and admit you're wrong. That number appears to be conserative. From what I can see, theres atleast 12 x JBL/Crown A6000GTi amplifiers in there... 54,000wRMS is a walk in the park for him.

i just tested my 12" yesterday. hit 139 db. i've never tested before, but others who have were there and saying that the meter was testing low. either way, i'm happy with 139.
Image Dynamics IDMAX 12" fed by a Fosgate BD1000.1, but it's hungry for more juice!

I have seen siminlar set ups like the chevy van at nopi and the tuner bash at spring break daytona. Once you have more than about six subs you have more than enough to bother anyone within earshot. I like that and love it when people stare at you like you have lost your mind.. you didn't lose it you just can't hear it at the moment !!! But using 18 subs and 20 or 30 batteries is strictly trailer queen and show only, A good friend had a 97 tahoe with 6 15" cvr's and two audiobahn amps about 3 feet long and it cracked the windshield and the rear view mirror fell off the very first time we turned it up at the stereo shop. , granted the tahoe was 5 years old at the time, but still that kinda bass demands attention even if you are old or think stereos should not be loud. Now, if I could just figure out how to mount that locomotive horn on my xB some where.........
