anyone mount large fog/driving lights on their xB?
has anyone mounted large (6"+) diameter fog lights or driving lights somewhere on the front of their xB? i have a set of Hella Rallye 1000's ready to mount, but i'm not 100% sure how i'm going to mount them for right now. i would like to not mount to the bumper cover, there's really no good way to do this. has anyone made a bracket to mount lights on the front, and how did you do it?
for those of you who will _____ about mounting big lights on the front, i drive 100 miles a day of Pennsylvania back roads to and from work, and the second half of that drive is after dark. having already hit a fox and nearly hitting several deer in my xB over the last 9 months i've owned it, i'm ready for some more adequate back-roads lighting.

Have you tried upgrading your lights to Silverstars. They make them for both fogs and the headlights and make a world of difference. Something to consider before drilling holes to mount offroad lights. My2cents
i don't plan on drilling any holes. if i do, they will be in the unibody rails to have brackets coming out through one of the grilles.
there are no stock bulb replacements that will do what i want my lights to do. have you ever seen what a set of good H3 driving lights will do? crazy stuff. like daylight. all i was asking for is if people have fabbed brackets to mount lights, what have they done and how have they done it.
btw, thank you for the suggestion though. i appreciate the input

I know what you are talking bout, my wife has the K/C Daylighters with 100 watt bulbs on her Jeep Wrangler. She can only use them on backroads though. They are not legal for all the time use. Good luck though if you choose to use them on the interstate.
they'll be wired up with the high beams, with a master on/off switch as well in case i don't want them to come on at all. there are a LOT of times when i'm on back roads in PA with nobody else on the road. that's all i need them for.
I put some 4 1/2" x 6" amber rectangle fogs in the lower right hand corners of the grill. (in the place of the little doors wher the tow bar is at but on both sides.) I had to fabricate my own brackets. Luckyly the our BOX is prewired for fogs, you just got to get the relay. $50 bucks at dealer or free at a junker because it fits in your pocket.
I really got to get some pics.
They amber I got looks really yellow like the Expensive Acuras or Mercedes Benz with the built in FOGs next to the headlights. 20.00 Bucks at autozone. I will probably be upgrading to some Hellas. I think model 450 if i remember right.

honestly, what i'm probably going to do is mount two pieces of angle iron to the inner structure rails sticking out through the middle grille, then weld another piece of steel across the two to make a single solid flat bar across the width of the middle grille so i can mount the driving lights and perhaps a set of fogs a bit later on. that way i won't be modifying anything except perhaps the middle grille (big deal) and a couple holes drilled in the inner structure, and the whole deal will be removable with a couple of bolts. also, i can change the lights on the bar without worrying about slight differences in size or configuration later on.
still want to see pics of the yellow fogs in the lower holes.
http://www.rallylights.com/hella/450.asp so these are what you're putting in there?
here is the pair that i have already:

Does it make the fogs look whiter? How is their quality? I am wanting to get projectors in the XB after I get it and I was just worried the fogs would be that bland white.
Also, this could be done in a search but while I am asking.....What are the bulb numbers for the fogs. Thanks... I know "USE THE SEARCH"
2 suggestions:
Get a light bar that ties in underneath the hood, then has some other means of attaching underneath the front bumper. Can be removable and with quick disconnects, can be on and off your car in a minute. Lots of Subaru rally cars have these, if you needed pics of how it works.
Replace your stock grille with a metal one, cut holes in it to mount the lights, and be prepared to light up the night
That's something that I have looked into, but using the Hella Black Magic lights with a black chrome grill.
Fog bulbs = 9006
Headlights = h4/9003

First - I'll get pics up tonight I hope - I forgot to upload them from my camera last night...anyway I'll put a pic as soon as I can...
I mounted 4"x6" hella lights onto the front of my xB, and also put LEDs into the front license plate holes.
I did what homeboy sugested - I had the same idea... I took some iron and started making a light bar that attaches to steel, actually I used the side flanges on the radiator... so far so good but I need to strengthen the steel or something,,, it's gonna
take a large poop if I ever get hit in the front end....
Anyways - if you pop out the covers on the lower grille, behind there are 2 holes, about 5/16", one on each side of the radiator.
On the passenger side, the hole is covered up by front plastic faring, pull down and the hole will be exposed. I used 5/16" thread rod first, but thought it was too flimsy, so I got 1/2" rod, and drilled these holes out to 1/2" also.
I took the 1/2" rod and cut 2 lengths about 9"-10". I passed the rod thru the hole, and backed it with a 1 1/2" body washer and a 1/2" lock nut with threadlocker/locktite on it. (actually I had some tile goop onhand, but use locktite unless you're a cheap bastard like me, then use tile goop) On the front side of the rod, I put another body washer, then a 1/2" nut and tightened up.
So now there you have 2 steel ski poles sticking out the front of the xB. Careful you don't hit it with your shinbone
Next I took a 3'Lx1"W piece of square steel (it's just right around 3 feet measured across the front bumper from hole to hole) and drilled out two 1/2" holes on each end to fit onto the ski poles. I also sized up where I was going to mount the lights, and
drilled holes out for them. Then I put a 1/2" nut on each pole, followed by another body washer, then put the steel bar on. That was followed up with another body washer, and then lock nuts, and tightened against each other.
I tapped out the two holes where the front license plate goes to 1/4" and then installed blue LEDs there.
Wiring the lights up was pretty easy. I already had a relay in the car with an unused power prong, so all I did was go there for switched power. It is a 30A, 5 prong relay, with 2 power outs on it. I have it switched via the ACC fuse (LEFT SIDE OF BLOCK) in the fuse block.
I installed a switch inside the cab so I could manually turn them off, but the relay makes them come on when the car comes on. I wanted a switch in case I needed them off for whatever reason - but I wanted DRL 's also... I also put a 10A inline fuse holder in. Then I fed the 12ga. wire thru the driver side kick panels, stabbed the rubber grommet at teh firewall under the steering column, and passed the wire thru to the engine compartment. Next I brought the + wires from the LEDs and the fog lamps up to this point, and connected them all together. The lamp bodies themselves are ground for the lamps, as long as they touch good metal they have ground. I grounded the LEDs to a ground point in the engine compartment, and cleaned up all my wires with split-loom.
Next I installed the 10A fuse into the holder and then powered on. These lamps are so bright I ended up aiming them down some, they only shine a few feet out from the front end, and they still hurt the eye. The blue LEDs look killer. Way way way too much light. I'm going to buy 2 more lights I think, probably some KC DayLighters, just so I can have the smiley-face covers.

just a test to see if this was even going to work - nothing bolted on yet, just sizing it all up...

then the final thing - I'm going to take it all off and make it black... maybe this weekend...

well - I think they will melt the plastic - they run damn hot.
I don't know if new ones run as hot - these are from the 1980's.... they are so hot water steams off them. Old school FTW.
They probably are more effective if spread out, and not aimed downwards so much. I like the cyclops look though.
I've passed a few cops now, and they didn't seem to care about the LEDs or the lamps... so I plan on aiming them up a little.
What I REALLY want is strobes to change traff.... I mean to catch peoples attention with.

I know for a fact that you have 2 bills plus invested in these lights. I also have a pair of metal rallye 1000/pencil beams sitting in the shop that I really wanted to mount.
Not to try and persuade your from using those lights, but have you set these things infront of the car and took a look how LARGE they look on the front of the little xB?
Also, the rear of the light has a large protrusion sticking out that is too large to set back into the lower grill to make it look tight with any sort of bracket system that would hole those heavy bastards from vibrating.
I again, I totally understand your desire to use those lights. I live in the backwoods and drive many miles on wildlife infested roads. Those of you who run those small lights have no idea what a large diameter lense like the Rallye 1000's will produce in light. I often have joked that those lights will burn the retina out of a deers eyes'.
If you find a clean, tight method of mounting those lights, please post pics... I would jump on it in a minute.

just saw this a couple posts down.. it would be interesting to see how this is mounted and copy the idea
