View Full Version : Turbos is CA
aryan13 08-27-2010, 08:42 PM Seeing that CA has some of the most stringent regulations against such a thing, I was just curious to see who has taken the plunge.
Some things you could include:
- City
- Type of turbo
- How long you have been boosted
- Problems
- Tickets?
Not trying to bring the law down on anyone just trying to see how those living in CA had dealt with the regulations that have been imposed on us.

-Whittier (20 mins from downtown LA)
-Custom Kit
- 2 years on and off
- By problems you mean with the kit?? My idle sucks.....
-No tickets
The key is not drawing attention to yourself. I have a 36'' muffler and painted my intercooler black. Most Cops don't know too much about after-market parts except that if its shiny its not stock.
3 of my good friends are CHP and they dont know crap about turbos and whatnot. They just say as long as your car isn't attracting attention you will be fine

stage 0 kit then a greddy kit
about a year total
minor fitment issues with custom stage 0 and manifold crack on greddy kit
never got a ticket
i got pulled over twice in one weekend with my stage 0 and the cops had no clue it was turbo. i got an emission ticket about two years ago but i was NA and loud as hell (headerback exhaust with no cat) im planning on getting another turbo kit here shortly so like nvmytc said just dont have a loud exhaust and speed around everywhere showing off your BOV and you will be straight.

Everything is going good. Car is running perfect. I was just curious about the other people that were out there.
I did however get a "modified exhaust" ticket about 2 days after you guys installed the exhaust. Since then all is good. I think that the cop that pulled me over was either having a bad day or was just a d__k.
aryan13 08-28-2010, 02:29 AM On another note, have any of you guys had to deal with getting your cars smogged?

there are always shady shops that will pass if the price is right...
aryan13 08-28-2010, 07:46 AM Really no other turboed tCs in CA?
jsg93085 08-28-2010, 07:48 AM either that or no one that is active on the boards anymore...
descendant's baseline kit is CARB legal last i heard
divisii 08-28-2010, 08:07 AM ^ At minimum, removal of one cat and the intake's carbon filter would not be CARB legal.
With that and the extensive process to get a CARB executive order no., there will likely never be a Cali. legal turbo.

that one was originally supposed to be CARB approved, but i guess they dropped that to keep the cost down on the consumer side...
aryan13 08-28-2010, 06:29 PM Descendant kit was originally supposed to be CARB certified.
Syldrin 08-29-2010, 08:26 AM my kit blew up on the drive to vista and i havent had the chance to put it back on yet.
Spr4yedTc 08-29-2010, 05:05 PM living inc CA must blow for tuners
Rob_DESCENDANT 08-31-2010, 03:52 PM Really no other turboed tCs in CA?
The Silver tC from San Diego that was here when your car was here got his car smogged on base 100% without issues. :-)
aryan13 08-31-2010, 04:29 PM Good to know. Really don't have to smog for like another 3 years, just planning ahead.
tokenride86 09-01-2010, 05:02 PM i saw a silver tC in san dimas last night with a front mount, couldnt tell what exhaust but it was a 3" turbo back, just saw it parked in the middle of the night, when i was cruising around... im planning on boosting after i pass my first smog check, i think itll be this year that they make me
CA really needs to look at the "whole picture" in my opinion. Many of the upgrades we are doing to our cars make them more efficient and environmentally friendly! I can see having an emissions test to make sure people are running CATs, but other than that if it passes, let it ride!
rougenite 09-08-2010, 03:02 PM Cali is bad for tuners indeed. Thats why im glad I am in Hawaii now :) They just have one rule: Get a reconstruction sticker! Safety checks every year but really easy to pass :)

While you may have 3 friends in CHP, you'd be surprised to know a lot of cops throughout the US actually know a great deal about cars. And I know for a fact California has training classes for Officers on how to identify parts, etc etc along with task forces.
While I agree with the "not attracting attention" statement, don't make broad generalizations that people may take to the streets and get in trouble with.
OP, just because there are only 2 members who really posted about having a turbo in California does not mean there aren't more. Believe it or not not every car owner joins a forum specific to them.

I understand this. Just was curious to who was out there. I rarely see anyone moded in Santa Barbara. Kind of gets lonely here when most of everyone lives in the LA area.

.
The OP asked specifically about So-cal, and I can tell you that MANY, not all, cops from so-cal have no clue whats going on with after market parts.
Not all of California has training classes for the officers. If they did then my friends would have a clue whats going on under my hood don't you think?
I know San Diego and San Bernardino have special street racing units but not over here where I live.
And if anyone decides to change their setup and "take it to the street" based off of one guys opinion on the internet then they deserve a ticket.

You should know about this forum, and not be surprised that they would do such.
