View Full Version : Aftermarket Lower Grille Keeps Falling Off! Doesn't snap in correctly...
Cop J tC 09-06-2010, 12:10 AM http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2004-2007-SCION-TC-UPPER-LOWER-BLACK-MESH-FRONT-GRILL-/140439155194?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AScion%7CModel%3AtC&hash=item20b2d371fa#ht_3705wt_824
I purchased this grille kit a while ago. The top piece stays in fine but the lower grille will not snap in correctly. I am not sure as to why this is, but I would really like this to be fixed because the grill stays in place for maybe 1-3 drives but then once in a while I will get out the car to see it disconnected, laying in the big hole area in the front of the car (in front of the radiator). I really just need some help/guidance to how to get this thing to stay and fit...
Spicy_McHaggiz 09-06-2010, 12:32 AM Typical of ebay. (not bashing, just saying) But I would try to get some black zip ties and zip it into place. Thats how a lot of grills on these cars actually end up staying. Or if you don't need to take it out anytime soon (or ever) super glue wouldn't hurt.
ack154 09-06-2010, 12:36 AM How did you install it? Did you take the bumper off to snap it into place or are you trying to do it while on the car?
Cop J tC 09-06-2010, 12:39 AM I am trying to do it while the bumper is on the car. I just put the grille in place and pull toward me. It snaps into some of the clips but some of them don't fully snap in. It looks like it is the correct size, but I guess it is not. I just don't know exactly what I should cut, if I should be cutting something.
CarbonXe 09-06-2010, 12:41 AM This is what happens when you buy knock offs.

Take the bumper off (it's easy) and push it in from the inside.
rather than bash ebay products ,, yield advice to the problem!!!
i would take the bumper off very easy to do with a few hand tools and install it that way. you will be able to see exactly whats going on so you can better asses the situation. (maybe just a ziptie or two will help also:wink:)
juzlookzfazt 09-06-2010, 03:45 AM Aren't those just exact copies of the original VRD's?
bluemex 09-06-2010, 04:19 AM i have the same problem now because my front lip pushed it back a little and that damn grill keeps falling off in that space back there. i might try zip ties tmw =P
Cop J tC 09-06-2010, 04:30 AM How exactly can you zip tie this? I would rather the zip ties not show. I don't feel like taking of my bumper!!! Maybe glue would work but where would I glue?
bluemex 09-06-2010, 04:34 AM mmm not sure..ill take a look at it tmw and give you an update.

Yes.
exact
No.
kenshinta 09-06-2010, 05:01 AM It happened to me, I used super clue :D
bought the same grill and had the same problem top fits great and the bottom keeps popping out even when i took off the bumper to put it on. i ended up screwing it in from the side
ScionSnowman 09-06-2010, 02:32 PM Well if you want something made with quality let me know. I have upper and lower authentic VRD grills literally in the original VRD box taped up ready to ship. Let me know
Chrisb319 09-06-2010, 04:18 PM There are some small plastic tabs where the grill goes make sure none of those are broken. I had absolutely no problem with the vrd(like) grill I purchased on eBay 2 years ago. It even stays in place after my front end accident on my new bumper. Usually when these things don't stay in place it's because the tabs on the bumper are broken. When I installed my grill I took the bumper off so I could make sure the grill came of correctly and no tabs where broken during instalation of the grill.
it happened to me too. i kept the oem lower....now i have fogs
ack154 09-06-2010, 06:01 PM Look, people, this isn't hard...
I have the exact same "knockoff" grilles... sure, the seller said they're VRDs, but I don't trust ____ on eBay.
TAKE THE BUMPER OFF. It takes some force but they snap in and hold just fine. Mine has never fallen out. If yours is, you're doing it wrong or have broken tabs.
RoboCop 09-06-2010, 08:00 PM If you don't feel like taking the bumper off and want to test one more method, if you can reach inside the engine bay all the way to the bottom grille, you can push it in from the inside. I've done it. There are some areas where you can reach your arm through.
Deathwish238 09-07-2010, 06:19 AM Zip-ties.
jaylouie 09-08-2010, 04:57 AM best way is to take off bumper and see what is not fitting correctly, then maybe ziptie it together
Mr.Waveline 09-08-2010, 05:52 AM I had the same problem with my crappy plastic grille kit. All the tabs were fine. What I ended up doing was pulling a small piece of rope through the holes, and looping it back around to the front. Then, I pulled on the rope in the corners that werent fitting. It says on great now. I was also too lazy to remove the bumper.
bluemex 09-10-2010, 03:45 AM i didnt have this problem before. but having that front lip its like to thick for the grill to fit into place. ill man up and take the bumper off and try again..
Aroddalobster 09-10-2010, 06:51 PM 1. take off bumper
2. try to snap it in place.
3. if step 2 no worky, drill a hole through grille and bumper while pushing grille in.
4. get paper clip.
5. straighten paper clip.
6. slide straightened paper clip through holes.
7. wrap paper clip back and twist together.
8. reinstall bumper
Spoofa 11-14-2010, 04:51 AM What year is your tC?
I bought a top grille off e-bay that was 05-08, thinking that 08 and 09 are the same.
The 09' had some tabs that the grille wasnt made for, I had to drimmel it to fit. Not a big deal but you might wana take a look at that... Not sure how the bottom ones fit though.
Just a thought.
