How many inches is the tanabe drop? I'm riding 2" spy drop springs and the TRD shocks/struts work great.

I blew my stock struts about 8k miles after I lowered. I can't remember the manufacturer of the TRD struts, but I believe it begins with a "T"; the instructions were in Japanese. I will look behind my wheel to see if the sticker with the company name can still be seen on them. I'll let you know.

We have a hot lava over here in the norcal that I lowered on Goldlines and trds with no problems. In fact he went to the track for fun and thought it worked ok. Thats wierd that your struts went bad. I am at 36,000 miles and my struts are still good with my RS*R springs. I have had my car for about 1.5years too. I went from Eibach to Goldline to RS*R. Still going strong on my stock struts.

You don't need to use echo upper strut/shock mounts do you? I remember reading a post about it,forgot what shocks were used though

Ok, if the echos fit, do they make cheap(er), performance struts/shocks for the echo?
Lonely_Raven

Any shock/strut that's the stock length is going to die
prematurely simply because with a 2"+ drop you are already
1/4 to 1/3 compressed. That constant compression causes
the fluids in the shocks/struts to get beaten up and foamy
which reduces their usefulness, and therefor causes them
to deteriorate faster.
Generally when you lower suspension the way we have, you
need shocks/struts that are slighly stiffer, and are designed
with a shorter travel in mind.
I used to get custom cut KYB or Koni Yellow that are
literally cut down X-Inches to match my lowering.
Not good news I'm sure, but stockies will blow. Getting the
Echo stokies is just going to do the same thing.

That was my thread. I installed Koni Adjustables on my xA. Turns out we were just stupid and it was late so hard to see in the dark and we THOUGHT the diameter of the upper strut mount wasn't big enough, but it was.

Check out the Koni Yellow Adjustables or KYB. I got my Koni Yellows for the front and back for $500 shipped from Tire Rack. Of course, these are not cheaper than say TRD, but they definetly outperform them, plus adjustable is always nice.

How do you know that the Koni outperform the TRD parts? Have you tried both or have you read reviews on them?
Someone asked me this earlier in the thread: I've had my TRD dampers on for about 2 months; they are noticeably stiffer and better around corners. I drive pretty hard, so I'm wondering how long they are going to last.

im looking for a set of shocks for my xa, also. as i kno, those of us with lowering springs need non-position sensitive shocks and struts so that the S&S are not stressed past what they are made to handle. Koni's shocks and struts are not position sensitive, so they would be a good choice. right?
can someone who is more knowledgable about suspension tell me what makes a shock non-position sensitive? im hoping that the TRD ones fit into this catagory. they probably don't, though.

get ahold of a shock/sturt company and look for shorter ones, try ground control.

Cool,so Echos ARE a direct fit.
Since you own Koni yellows you can answer my question :P Do the front struts have adjustable lower spring perches? I had yellows on a Civic, the lower perch can be installed either higher or lower than the standard position

Man, for a few hundred dollars more, you might as well get TEIN Basic coilovers. Easy to install, and have full range of travel, not too mention height adjustability.

KYB GR-2's are garbage. they're not cheap because they're for the echo, they're cheap because they're a crappy bottom-of-the-line gas shock. they might be one mild step up from stock, but even that is questionable...a set of GR-2's lasted a whopping 8k miles on my '91 jetta with eibach sportlines (~2" drop).
spend the extra to get TRD's, they will handle that drop better than the KYB's will.

yeah, i'm not talking smack on all of KYB's line, just that the GR2's are not meant for what you're trying to do, and won't hold up well over time.
