View Full Version : the meaning of boost? duston831 03-03-2005, 12:38 PM i heard a guy say he had 10lbs of boost in his car. what exaclty is that? (i think it was lbs) lol wrx_brad 03-03-2005, 12:42 PM http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm TJCCARDCO 03-03-2005, 05:25 PM It's how many pounds of pressure is going through the turbo system. 10psi is a good amount, I dont know the compression level on the tC because I never looked into it....but Im sure its somewhere in the 8.5:1 range, so Im sure its okay. jlaznlover 03-03-2005, 06:40 PM i heard a guy say he had 10lbs of boost in his car. what exaclty is that? (i think it was lbs) lol it is about amount of boost pressure the turbocharger is providing over the normal atmosphere. normal atmospheric pressure was about 14.7? small turbo = little horsepower gains = little turbo lag big turbo = larger horsepower gains = more turbo lag. the tc has a compression ratio is 9.6:1 duston831 03-03-2005, 07:14 PM ok well the thing is, this past weekend i raced a 99 pontiac grand prix gts. I spun through first and we were head to head when I went into 2nd. I started pulling away and by the time i went to 3rd, i could see his bumper in my side mirror. We stopped and talked after and he asked if id be interested in racing his friend who has the same car but with 10 lbs of boost and i said sure lol... so did i just bury myself? am i going to have a chance at winning or what? jlaznlover 03-03-2005, 07:27 PM i am betting his friend's car is supercharged, not turbocharged. some grand prix's come with a factory supercharger florencescion 03-03-2005, 07:49 PM i am betting his friend's car is supercharged, not turbocharged. some grand prix's come with a factory supercharger That would be the Grand Prix GTP. All the GTP's after 1997 came with a factory installed Eaton M90 Supercharger. Also, the Buick Regal GS came with the same motor. This one was mine: http://members.tccoa.com/jaybird/matt/buick/buick4.jpg So don't go picking on "grandpa's" car, because just before I blew the tranny I ran a 13.4 in the 1/4 mile with it... man I really miss that car :( In case you are wondering what the motor looks like, this is it: http://members.tccoa.com/jaybird/matt/buick/buickmotor.jpg duston831 03-03-2005, 10:26 PM sorry, the grand prix that i raced was the gtp, i wasnt sure if it was gtp or gts, but i just did a search and they dont even have gts, so it was definetly a gtp. He said his service light was on but im not sure if that was an excuse or not. According to what you said about urs, maybe he wasnt lying. anwayz that was ur 1/4 time stock? florencescion 03-03-2005, 10:56 PM sorry, the grand prix that i raced was the gtp, i wasnt sure if it was gtp or gts, but i just did a search and they dont even have gts, so it was definetly a gtp. He said his service light was on but im not sure if that was an excuse or not. According to what you said about urs, maybe he wasnt lying. anwayz that was ur 1/4 time stock? No, stock 1/4 is around 14.9 seconds. I had on my car a 3.4" Supercharger pulley, MSP Cold Air Induction, Colder plugs, Removed U-bend, cat-back exhaust, MSD 8mm plug wires, and some other stuff. With all the mods I was pushing abour 13 psi wich brought me to around 260 HP and 310 lb-ft (stock is 240 HP and 280 lb-ft). Tranny is rated to hold a mad 240 and 280 which is why, when combined with my lead foot, I blew the tranny twice in 4 months  This is what it looked like under the hood when I sold it: http://members.tccoa.com/jaybird/matt/buick/motorfall01.jpg duston831 03-03-2005, 11:16 PM so i dont have a chance at winning? and the guy i raced must have had some serious problem(s) with this car? (it was an auto btw) florencescion 03-03-2005, 11:24 PM so i dont have a chance at winning? and the guy i raced must have had some serious problem(s) with this car? (it was an auto btw) First they are all autos. Second, if his car is running right then no, you don't have a chance... unless he really sucks at launching because it is very hard to launch a GTP without roasting the tires. duston831 03-03-2005, 11:40 PM thats just dandy lol, thanks for the info TheScionicMan 03-03-2005, 11:53 PM it is very hard to launch a GTP without roasting the tires. From what I've read, it sounds like the tC has a similar problem. duston831 03-04-2005, 12:23 AM yea, having a good launch w/o spinning tires takes a little bit of practice w/the stock tires |
