Ok, here goes. What is the difference between axle-back and cat-back exhaust?

just what it says ... the axle back starts just before the axle and the cat back starts at the cat.

So cat-back would replace everything up to the manifold?

So cat-back would replace everything up to the manifold?

No... Just up to the cat.

It goes, engine - exhaust manifold - cat - exhuast pipe - resonator - more pipe - muffler - tip

What's a good brand of cat-back to get. I'd like to have a deeper tone, not so buzzy.

cat back=u replace more of the exhaust system
axle back= basically the exhaust and little bit of the pipe prior and of course the tip

no cat back exhausts...the cat, mid pipe and resonator are all welded together...

so its really axle back or manifold back...

you can go to a muffler shop and they will cut after the cat and weld in new stuff, but its no shade tree mechanic stuff...

Does the xB have a flex pipe just south of the exhaust manifold stock?

My cavalier does and I just had to replace it when it broke. The flex pipe, down tube, cat and o2 sensor bung, along with both flanges are on one tube... about $350. I just put on a Pace Setter header that replaced the flex pipe with a more standard downtube.

no flex pipe...
