View Full Version : What exhaust has a deep note?
Lonely_Raven 03-03-2005, 06:14 PM I'm casually considering an axle back for my box, but I'm concerned with getting
a ricer sounding can on the back.
What axle backs are known for a deep note? More of a classic hot rod sound is
what I"m looking for, not a fart can.
Thanks!
crayonBOX 03-03-2005, 06:28 PM ive got a jic magic axle back.. to me i like it, its nice.. but for a 'hot rod' sound. the precision muffler magnaflow axleback is nice, ive heard it on a friend's box and it's clean, deep, and not loud.
the jic is louder w/the silencer out. deep and louuuud. silencer in is nice.

Lonely_Raven 03-03-2005, 06:30 PM I like your description of the precision muffler.
You have a link for that?
B2FiNiTY 03-03-2005, 07:07 PM You won't be able to get a classic hot rod sound out of your xb.

The auto axle back will give you a deep tone. Not ricey at all, we have them ready to ship. :D

Both my Porsches have a deep note; one is a 1.8L the other is a 2.4L, so I know it's
possible.
Thanks Stylis, but I have a manual, and that video....I don't think your video camera
really captured the sound well, especially after that video was compressed so
heavily. I heard more digital artifacts then muffler sound.
az_pinoy 03-03-2005, 09:03 PM Greddy Sp2 axle-back...pics in my profile..
sound clip..(not really captured that well)..

I know that the scion will nevere sound like a porsche, but having a deep tone is still possible. :D

Yeah, I'm very pleased with the sound from this.
hotbox05 03-03-2005, 10:38 PM You will never get a "hot rod" sound. you can get loud , or you can get low but you wont get hot rod.
Lonely_Raven 03-03-2005, 10:44 PM OK, I guess to clarify, I'm looking for a low note. Loud isn't
needed.
disco 03-03-2005, 11:19 PM "Magnaflow"
hotbox05 03-03-2005, 11:35 PM not ,
disco 03-03-2005, 11:48 PM Just the muffler Hotbox, screw bolt on. The right muffle xl77 strait flow absolutley sounds better than a fricken fart down the road. LR wants deep tone at a good price, Go Magnaflow w/ 2"/2.25 pipes.

Sounds nice! (especially through my PC's subwoofer!) 8)
Lonely_Raven 03-04-2005, 02:31 AM Thanks Disco, sounds like you understand me! LOL
unlmtdndeavor 03-04-2005, 02:44 AM i recommend gabe's system. ive heard it on many vehicles and it sounds nice. id prolly get it if i didnt have my N1 sitting there
erikcooper 03-04-2005, 03:18 AM anyone got clips of JIC Magic or Invidia's?
B2FiNiTY 03-04-2005, 04:14 AM Porsche motors are boxer as you know since you own one.
Regardless, there are many many good suggestions people have made in this thread.
Are you looking for quiet deep or loud deep?
joe52985 03-04-2005, 04:55 AM i have the stylis's axleback and i couldnt be more pleased with the sound, nice and deep, loud but not obnoxious, with a hint of raspiness(thats not a word...i know). makes the engine sound like its alot bigger than it is lol

man, that exhaust setup sounds like couple of dual dogs barking. :rolling:
Scievolution85 03-04-2005, 05:47 AM Since your all talking about exhaust', me and my friend here are having an argument about "is there a difference between a tuned exhaust and just an exhaust that doesnt say it?" let us know to end this argument! :blah:

i say you ask your friend what his interpretation of a tuned exhuast is. then report his meaning and someone will answer for you
heme11 03-04-2005, 06:31 AM My TRD sounds pretty low, and not ricey at all i'm extremely happy with it.
squirrel 03-04-2005, 04:27 PM Its a 1.5 litre, you're not going to get a "hot rod" sound out of it. And don't go w/ a canister type muffler, or you'll be running around sounding like a Honda. But what do I know, I'm not an experet or anything.
glen619 11-07-2005, 08:02 PM It is pretty loud. I just installed one on my xB last weekend. I stuck the silencer in it. Now it is very quiet. Almost too quiet.. but it was damn loud without the silencer. One thing to mention, at freeway speed with a 5 speed tranny, it is quiet without the silencer. When you get on it... it will roar.
It is not ricey. Very low rumble.
hotbox05 11-07-2005, 10:59 PM any exhaust system can be messed up and turn rice and every one can have a nice growl. not a 5.0 howl but a nice growl.
Box666 11-08-2005, 03:38 AM the strup i just recently put on sounds pretty damn amazing. Although I had a slight problem with manufacturing but got it fixed at a local muffler shop. Did I mention the Strup exhaust sounds amazing?
hotbox05 11-08-2005, 07:43 AM no axle back sounds 400 dollar amazing imo.
Box666 11-08-2005, 03:13 PM haha Darren, but the exhaust looks 400 dollars amazing...
RTon20s 11-08-2005, 06:25 PM I don't know where the $400 figure is coming from, but I could have the Strup axle back shipped to my door for under $325. Not cheap for an axle back exhaust, but not $400 either.
Boxer_Rebellion 11-08-2005, 06:34 PM I've heard good things about Strup, but I ended up getting a new Magnaflow street series muffler off SL classifieds with custom 2" axleback piping from a local race shop... whole shebang cost $140. VERY happy with the tone, low and not at all rice.
I drove an automatic RS2 press car with the DC Sports exhaust and it sounded like a ____ed-off beehive back there... not what you want to hear, esp. with an auto.
hotbox05 11-08-2005, 07:35 PM it cost him 300 some odd plus then he had to pay 65 dollars for an exhaust shop to modify it because it was messed up in manufacturing and did not fit correctly... that's how i came up with 400 dollars..
RTon20s 11-08-2005, 09:46 PM OK... I thought you meant the exhaust alone was $400.
