View Full Version : the official Drunk reply Scionlife thread!
ScionFred 09-18-2010, 08:32 AM Replace your oem 320cc fuel injectors with higher flowing 440cc injectors. It will fool the ECU controlled trip computer into calculating 35mpg instead of the actual 25mpg. I just filled my tank tonight and it took 8.37 gals to go 210 miles. The trip computer reported an avg of 34 mpg vs actual mpg of 25. If I had a piggyback tuned for -5% fuel trim, it would have calculated 30mpg instead for an increase of 5mpg.
Instead of simply comparing miles traveled to gallons used, our trip computer is much more sophisticated. It calculates the fuel used based on fuel trims compared to MAF, based on the oem injector size. Adding larger injectors tricks it into reading less fuel required to travel any given distance because of the negative fuel trims. Adding a piggyback or in-line ECU with fuel trims more negative than the stock configuration will result in the trip computer showing better than actual fuel economy.
Let's face it, it isn't terribly difficult to add more power to a modern lean-burn OBDII engine but improving fuel economy is next to impossible. Especially when you've added a turbo or supercharger. Toyota/Scion engineers are not idiots, not by a long shot.

YES!!! It will definitely trick your trip computer into reporting much higher MPG than actual! The "kit" is available exclusively through ScionFred Motorsports. Pricing to be determined.
buickid 09-19-2010, 03:58 AM DJ Frozone: It doesn't actually increase fuel mileage. Just makes the dash computer say that you did.
DJ_FroZone 09-19-2010, 04:04 AM ahhhhhhhhh ____.....im leaving this fail here as is. enjoy
ScionFred 09-19-2010, 04:49 AM I wasn't sure if you were playing along or getting played. buickid is correct.
DJ_FroZone 09-19-2010, 05:01 AM nope i was dead ___ serious. i got home 4 am. saw this n went right to bed lol

RULE 1 and 2 sir!
XD40tC 09-20-2010, 12:44 AM Is this actually getting more MPG or is it just reading it innaccurately? sorry Im too drunk to think it out...

Awww! Don't pick on the poor guy, he was dreaming of the moon :)! Can't say I'd mind it myself, my MPG just dropped from 29.5 to 28.0 hand calculated -- and there I was, hoping for 30+ :(.
DJ_FroZone 09-20-2010, 01:44 AM RULE 1 and 2 sir!
edited. once again late night reply. my fault
and oh man did he really reply....idk if he is drunk...he typed that to clearly.
pyroman131 09-20-2010, 04:04 AM What the heck is the purpose of this thread? lol
When I get drunk alone, I play Guitar Hero or I peruse Facebook, not get on ScionLife!!!
Pasquale 09-20-2010, 06:14 AM Dont get drunk alone LOL... call friends haha, profit
So what purpose does this mod accomplish exactly. Does it just mess with your ECU making the it think its getting better gas mileage then it really is?
XD40tC 09-20-2010, 03:16 PM Haha I was checkin my FS thread and decided to look around... SL is the last thing I check ;)

Increasing injector size is part of adding F/I. The impact on the MPG display is a side effect.
Instead of simply comparing miles traveled to gallons used, our trip computer is much more sophisticated. It calculates the fuel used based on fuel trims compared to MAF, based on the oem injector size.
The injectors are probably by far the best measure the ECU has for gas consumption, given they're directly controlled by a computer. I expect the gas tank float serves more as a convenience to the driver than anything else.

That's a great question. So far it has proven to be a somewhat amusing reading comprehension test!
I really posted this just to share the info about how fuel trims affect the trip computer. Any piggyback or in-line ECU that controls the injector pulse will certainly affect the mpg calculation. So when you read about some one claiming better mpg with a turbo, bigger injectors and engine management, now you'll know why they think they are.
As for the misleading title... I was really drunk at the time...
XD40tC 09-21-2010, 02:46 AM Haha yes!

pyroman131 02-06-2011, 05:33 AM Well, I just revisited this thread, obviously sober now, and read my post.
The funny thing is my txt messages come out horribly illegible, yet my Forum post there was quite understandable. lol
I'll have to try to remember the next time I get hammered to come back to this thread. :)

Pasquale 02-09-2011, 10:40 PM This is by far my favorite thread on this entire forum.
