Default What to do when I repaint stocks?

I wanna re-paint my stocks cuz I'm bored of my gunmetal color. I'm thinking of painting them gold/bronze. My question is do I have to sand it to get all of the gunmetal paint off? Or do I just have to sand it to scuff it up a little?

SEARCH! There is even a freaking DIY on this.

To answer your question though, the best adhesion will come if you sand all the stock coating off and primer it, then scuff sand lightly over the primer and then add the color you want.
