I've thought about this for awhile, and with Scion being technology based, you would think that they would make the manuals available for download. The cost of $200+ for a "printed" manual is rediculous! I would assume that the manual was created with a computer and that saving the data in a .pdf format has already been done to publish the manuals.

Perhaps we should start a poll on this.

I'm sure that virtually everyone would rather search a computer document for the data needed and print just those pages.

DON'T LET THIS THREAD DIE!!!!

Or if you know how to use newsgroups to get stuff ,I can post the XB stuff to a newsgroup.
Thanks

doh, I didn't read the full subject line.
Take caution if you plan on transfering the manuals to .pdf because I think Toyota/Scion probably has a "copyright" on these manuals.
If the manuals are made available in any other format, I think only Toyota/Scion can do this.

The manuals can be downloaded from the following website.
http://techinfo.toyota.com
It does require a fee for use.
10 dollars a day or 50 dollars a month.
They also have a yearly fee of 350.
If you do join for 1 day make sure you join in the morning and download as much as you can before midnight of that day.
All accounts expire at midnight.
I was able to download the entire manuals, TSB and accessory instructions in less than 2 hours.
With this site you can download any manual for Lexus, Toyota and Scion for only 10 dollars.
If you know how to get binaries from newsgroups pm me and I will tell you which newsgroup that I have seen the posting the XB manuals
Sorry for the teaser I didn’t have the link at work, I had to wait until I got home.

THANKS. :D

There's a LOT of clicking involved as the manuals are split up into subsections of 1-5 pages each so plan on spending some quality time with your computer. But it sure beats $200+ for the full set of manuals.

I have got about a hour and a half in it right now.. Im combining them into one PDF as I go 10 groups at a time but im about half way done with the manual and im at 693 pages.. its ALOT of clicking..do be prepaird..and the time is Pacific standard time on that 12:00 cut off..which gives us east coasters and extra 3 hours..

You are not able to use a debit card for this, even a VISA debit card. My credit card is maxxed out right now so I am screwed here.

This sucks. I never heard of anything that accepted VISA but wouldn't take a VISA debit card. WTF?

something is either wrong, or has changed. i bought 1 day access with my visa debit card no problems.

I've heard that it is not a good idea to use your debit card on-line, if some gets your number your account is instantly accessed. With a credit card they say you are protected by the carrier and are not liable for any charges.

If someone buys the manual, I've got a nice FTP location that you can use to store it, but potentially allow access to anybody. ;) Let me know, and I'll walk you through the process.

You are totally correct, XBGuy:

Fool's School | Debit vs. Credit

Not all cards that say Visa and MasterCard are credit cards. Some cards with those brands are debit cards, which work very differently.

Debit cards, which debuted in 1989, withdraw money directly from your checking account and are meant to replace checks. When you use a debit card, you're paying with cash. Using a debit card can keep you from spending beyond your means, provided you don't accidentally spend your rent on dog toys and frothy beverages.

But debit cards don't always offer the same conveniences, services and protections as conventional credit cards. For instance, there is no grace period from the time you buy something with a debit card to the time you actually pay for it. And some banks even charge you each time you use your debit card.

Many debit cards limit the amount you may buy on the card to $1,000 per day, even if you have a checking account flush with cash. And if you don't have sufficient funds to cover what you buy, you'll be liable for the transaction and be slapped with some pretty vicious overdraft fees.

Debit cards also may not offer the same rights consumers have with credit cards regarding purchase problems. Say the Chia Pet Menagerie you buy during a late-night TV shopping spree turns out to be a single Chia guinea pig with seeds that never bloom. If you paid for it with a debit card, you may have no way to stop payment to Chias R Us.

If a stranger in dark glasses takes down your debit card number as you're phoning Chias R Us, you may be stuck with unlimited liabilities for losses should you fail to report the theft within a certain period (anywhere from two to 60 days). A lost debit card is like cash to a thief. And your fraud liability is currently $50 for credit cards, but up to $500 for debit cards. Read the fine print to learn what protections your lender is offering you.

Learn more about payment cards at www.fool.com/ccc, www.ftc.gov/ftc/consumer.htm and www.cardweb.com.

What I did was open the file, it downloads into Adobe Acrobat Reader (I had to click refresh to actually see the image), "save as" created my own file names directed all to a folder on my hard drive. My total download was 743 files @ 44.2MB. Plan on about 4 hours of constant clicking.
All in all, very well worth the time.

4 hours to get 44MB? That's a lot of clicking!

Any chance of dropping those files onto CD for those of us with weak clicking fingers? You could more than recoup your investment!

4 hours ???? This guy must have been a pro. I downloaded the complete maintenance manual, and the complete electrical manual, and a few service items, and it took me close to 8 hours !!! And that's with a high speed Wi-Fi connection.

There are thousands of files, each which must be opened in Adobe to be saved. Lots of clicks with the mouse. Maybe thousands of clicks.

Was it worth it?? I'll let you know if I can somehow print it all out into paper form.

"High Speed" Wireless is not true. Even with a DLink AirPlus Xtreme G your real speed is much less than the advertised rate.

It take me 15 - 20 min to download an ISO image 9650-780 mb) of Microsofts products form my MSDN subscription at work. (Fractional T-1) at home it's almost 1 hour on a cable modem.

I found the problem...Norton turned my computer into HAL!
The TIS site is definitely worth the money, it's a helluva lot cheaper than buying a service manual, TSBs, electrical wiring charts, etc.
Someone will be selling CDs on ebay before long...

I did it. Me an a buddy with a Tacoma split the $10. I got every single file for the xB I could find. This included the whole repair manual, TSBs, wiring diagrams, even the accessory installation instructions. It did take me a good four hours of constant clicking. I strongly recommend spending the $10.

A big tip for anyone who does this... when you go to save a file, be careful what you name it. I recommend the chapter and page number... like "05-29" This will make searching so much easier.

So who's going to host these files for us? Or if they are hosted,

I've got the space, if someone just gets the files to me, I'll

Depends on your bank, xBguy... Mine covers lost/stolen card charges on a debit card same as a credit card - some don't...

If someone gets my debit card number/expiration and runs up charges, I'm only stuck for the first $50...same as credit card.

If you pay the $10 for one-day access to the techinfo site on a Saturday evening, you have until the end of the day on a Monday before the access time expires. You know, just to save on your wrists a bit so you don't burn out trying to get every bit of info in one day.
