Default What size summer tire?

This is a question for the track drivers out there.

I'm shopping summer tires now (yes, I have the itch). I'm torn on tire size. The SEMA cars sort of help, but at the same time they confuse just as much. I'm looking to stay as close to the stock diameter as possible.

In this case, I'm looking at 255/40R18 Yoko Advan AD08's. But, the tire sounds too tall, despite it being 0.24% larger than stock. So stock measures at 25.8in and the 255/40R18 are 25.9in.

I know the Crawford car is running 265/35R18 and the Greddy car is running 255/35R18. But I need to keep street driving this car in mind and the Greddy size will throw the speedo out quite a bit.

The rim size will be 18x9.5" if that helps anyone.

Any advice is appreciated!

^Thats the size I did a test fit with and it worked perfectly. Maybe that's because the sidewall was shorter and it didn't look as strange, but regardless, I'm still not sure!

2 references I use when choosing tires. It's good to know what does and does not fit so you have reference points. From there, you're good to go.

I've made my decision after reading your thread "It fits" and this thread...
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=194387
It looks like you've already read it from your post...
I'm going to go for Michelin PS3s...yes 3 and not 2...it is a new tire. New car, new tire.

just went to test fit some 18x9.5 grids with a 235/40R18 and they looked puny! I will for sure be going with 255/40R18's myself. .1+ is hardly going to be a difference as I generally went up that much on a new tire setup on every car I have worked on with nothing but amazing results. I can post a pic of the 235/35 setup

^Awesome! You just totally reassured me on this. The 235/40R18 does look a little funny now seeing it installed.

On a different note, what offset are those wheels? Any clearance issues?

They had no clearance issues and any lower offset you might run into some as I saw that the caliper hardly cleared the lower part of the brake caliper on the front. They were 18x9.5 with a 38 offset and couldnt sit any more flush

Hey guys...why 18s? Why not 19s? The TRD wheels are 19s...
Is there a class rule that you are abiding by?

Personally I'm sticking with 18's because of several reasons; cost, performance and rim selection is much more accessible as to what I want in 18's as far as width and style go. Plus, since I plan on tracking the car they are the best option over a thinner 19 with a lower profile sidewall

Track. I have a better tire selection in 18" (including Grand AM takeoffs). That and rotational mass. For this car, 18's are the smallest you can go when running the TRD BBK, which I plan on doing.

The 19's look great in my opinion though and I would be hard pressed to get them for street driving. Will see what the budgets allow!

There is a direct correlation between cost and performance…performance will cost you.

The best performance wheels you can get are forged wheels…most are cast for cost reasons (as you had mentioned). Forged aluminum is much stronger than cast aluminum, therefore lighter…that is performance in my book. But, forging is more expensive than casting. This is the best deal I could find on forged wheels…

I still try to get the best bang of my buck…

Costco sells tires at a very good price. You can get these from them…

It would be pretty hard to beat this combo…

But lower profile tires, for track, are not always best. You want some give in your tires as they will flex as the car sways on them in an attempt to hold the ground.

Also, just because a wheel is lighter, doesn't always make it so. Your car will work harder to turn a 20lb 19" versus a 22lb 18".

I'm not knocking your decision, I applaud it actually, but 18's are going to be better for this car then 19's for track.

I'll be using 18x9.5" RPF1's which are about 18lbs. They are cast.

^Forged is better yes, if it warrants the additional cost. In the case of RPF1's, there aren't many wheels (if any) that warrant the additional cost for the marginal weight savings. And regarding reliability, the RPF1 has been proven in motorsports many times over.

Probably JRP here in Canada. We have an account with them and the price is similar to that of the states.

On a side note, I pick up my Advan AD08's friday.
