View Full Version : Cyrogenics? reagulator 03-07-2005, 11:34 PM Ive heard people getting their brake rotor cyrogenicly treated. What does that mean? Does it make your rotors last longer? kileil 03-18-2005, 04:33 PM They actually freeze the rotors using liquid nitrogen or some similar method. Its supposed to essentially cause the atoms in the metal form stronger directional bonds. I've heard of it being used in transmissions to prevent shearing, but for rotors on a car mainly driven on the street Id say its overkill. Lonely_Raven 03-18-2005, 05:08 PM More specifically Cryogenic Tempering is using a computer controlled freezer to bring the temps of the objects in the freezer to -300 or lower. What this does is, on the molecular level, it tightens up and aligns the material better. Remember in school you learned that a solid is a solid because the molecules are close together, and a gas is a gas because the molecules are spread way far apart (at a given temp). So what happens is they drop your rotors (or pistons, or sword blade, or saxophone) into the freezer, the computer drops the freezers temps to some close to "absolute zero" as is safe/possible, and then SLOWLY bring the temps back up over a period of days so the molecules stay nice and tight, and aligned after the process is complete. What this does for brake rotors is makes them smoother, stronger, and less prone to warp. Lots of parts on race engines are cryogenically tempered for strength and consistency. Musicians have been known to "age" a brass instrument by having it tempered this way. It makes the valves float more smoothly and gives a richer tone like what you'd expect from a vintage or "masterpiece" instrument. In knives and swords it helps develop a more accurate and stronger edge, and gives the overall blade a strength that can not be had any other way. I've personally seen a man hand make a sword blade, temper it the traditional Japanese style, then on top of that have it cryogenically tempered AND BE ABLE TO CUT THROUGH A 1" THICK BRADED STEEL CABLE THEY USE TO HOLD TELEPHONE POLES UP!!! There was a company I worked with the past, they would give out samples of those cheap ___ plastic BIC disposable shaving razors, the kind you'd get on vacation when you forget your good razor....and the blades would last A MONTH of regular day to day use before going dull!! Obviously I'm a big proponent to Cryo Tempering. SCI_TC_GUY 03-18-2005, 05:51 PM man.....can u believe this guy.....he's like a walking textbook!!!!......it's great...... Eric.....your vast amounts of misc. information are an inspiration to us all!! Petem 03-18-2005, 06:27 PM if you plan to drive your car hard ...i would recommend buying an extra set of rotors and have them treated.. aftermarket perfomance pads are harder on rotors than your run of the mill street/factory pad... and as lonely raven mentioned..it makes the rotor less prone to warping.. im planing on doing this is if i upgrade the brakes iin anyway.. Eric.....your vast amounts of misc. information are an inspiration to us all!! Thank you, that's very kind of you to say so. Would you believe I have a severe memory issue, and several doctors can't seem to figure out why I have such a poor memory? Honestly, names, places, where I park my car, simple stuff like that is completely lost on me. If I didn't park my box in the same place at work everyday, I'd lose it...no joke. It kills me to be this retarded with remembering things, and the best the doctors can figure is maybe I have some form of ADD and it's affecting how my brain records things. I just try to imagine what I'd be like if I had a decent memory.....Hmmm, I'd be so SMRT LOL SCI_TC_GUY 03-18-2005, 06:54 PM haha......werd.......do u remember who I am?!?!???? DJ_X_Trodinaire 03-18-2005, 06:59 PM how many fingers am I holding up? good info by the way Joehnn 03-18-2005, 07:04 PM man.....can u believe this guy.....he's like a walking textbook!!!!......it's great...... As far memory goes, .........I forgot what I was going to say. Lonely_Raven 03-18-2005, 07:42 PM how many fingers am I holding up? good info by the way Hey! I have a bad memory, I'm not blind! LOL haha......werd.......do u remember who I am?!?!???? I remember you drive waaaay too far for Scion meets, but for the life of me I can't remember your name...hell, I've forgotten Fujiz real name, and he's only told me like 6 times already. What's weird is that I remember some odd things, but most everything just gets forgotten. And sometimes things I had no clue I knew will pop up, espeically when I'm drunk. LOL :loser: reagulator 03-19-2005, 05:38 AM damn, it takes 11 days to get an answer on this forum. Thanks raven for the info SCI_TC_GUY 03-19-2005, 01:55 PM Lonley Raven I remember you drive waaaay too far for Scion meets, but for the life of me I can't remember your name...hell, I've forgotten Fujiz real name, and he's only told me like 6 times already. JESUS!!!!!!! no really....Jesus is Fujiz name.......i think??? i"m Ben.....and yes, I drive Far&Wide for a scion meet!!!! are you coming to our meet/greet/cruise on APR 10??? there's gonna be a showing of like 40 scions......Chicago area...STL area....Memphis....Kentucky....Evansville.....it's gonna be BOMB!!!!! Lonely_Raven 03-19-2005, 02:22 PM Glad to help reagulator. Sorry I derailed your thread. (Raven takes notes of peoples names and starts making cue cards to match up a name, to a face, to a car) LOL Actually, I was going to start a thread in the SEGL forums about putting faces to names and cars with my photography skillz. I didn't want to admit, but this was the reason I wanted to do that. I'm going to make all the meets I can, but for real, lets not derail this thread any further. |
