View Full Version : New Custom Front Lip, not a Home Depot lip!

I used to own a 03 Focus ZX3, non-SVT, hatchback. Always wanted an SVT Focus, so I had replaced a lot of SVT Parts on my Focus back in the day.

I had been wondering lately if I could use an SVT front lower lip to replace my Home Depot lip. The Home Depot lip is great and I enjoyed paying under $10 for it, but it's been falling apart on me ever since I've been on my KSports.

So I asked some of the SVT guys on my old Focus forum to measure their front lips so that I could see how it measures up to my xB's bumper.

I got a rough measurement and decided to bite the bullet and buy a front lip and try it out.

Well I got the box today and installed the lip pretty easily, very little modification required. Here we go...

Thank you UPS!

Looks like a Home Depot lip, but sturdier, thicker, and better!

Took about 3 hours overall, first time I had taken off the bumper so it was a learning process. Used about 12 zipties, 12 selftapping screws and 10 nuts/bolts combo to make sure that the lip wouldn't fall off. The lip really does look good, hands lower than the stock lip, and is made of quality Ford parts :P

I was originally gonna get a Mustang Mach 1 lip to put on, but I had one on my Focus, and I remembered that it did not flex as easy as the SVT lip. Anyway enjoy. Comments are welcomed...

The lip goes for $90ish brand new from certain Ford dealers.
Part #: 2M5Z-17626-AAA

You can find the lip used on the Focus forums or ebay/craigslist...

I'm sorry guys a word of explanation: There's this rule that you have to 10 posts to your credit. before you can sell anything on their classifieds. I have been a member since last summer. I didn't even have an XB yet... When I tried to get all my posts in tonight to sell stuff cause i needed the money, ##### banned me from the site forever. It doesn't matter now cause it looks like i may have to sell my "b" anyway. Having no way to talk to him I did what i thought was the next sensible thing. I figured people with dual accounts would relay the msg. for me. Now I realize i'm at his level. I don't wanna burn my bridge. Please understand I'm a dad that works 2 jobs and run a house. I dont always have time to post 10 threads I do enjoy your pictures and strive to get my car as good looking as yours'. If i end up able to keep my car just don't judge me by this post. I'm in a rare place now.

Train ban ya? Their rules there are way sticter but they had a history of like massive spam so that's why those rules are there. I'm a member there too.
And I may not be in your place but not as bad, my family is in the process of filing bankruptcy right now and only my dad working and having to feed 2 teenagers and a 10 year old plus our mom and pay for our new house has gotta be hard for my parents... if that made any sense. Understandable, your post was just out of nowhere, lol

EMAN, dude your lip is like way low! lol i love it, i do wish it would contour the bumper a little bit more though.

I love the graphic over your Japan plates (I love zipties). Tho't abut getting a front lip, but the neighborhood I live in has those continuous curved profile curbs that scrape my stock front lip! Sigh.

It's not that low, my driveway is really sloped...

Speaking of sloped, there was a freak snowstorm in South Carolina today, and while I tried to shovel the snow off of my driveway, my xB decided to go sledding down my driveway and run into the back of my wife's 4Runner. Seriously...my "parked" xB started sliding on the ice by itself, that's how much of an incline I have...

And the resulting damage...

Ran right into the 4Runner's trailer hitch...guess I'll be doing some zip tie bumper stitching in the near future...I think it shows character!

Some other snow pics...

Had to chock the wheels off after my little incident to try to keep the car from sliding anymore...

Neat followup to your HD lip :)! I can't even consider such a thing since depending on angle the fascia bottom already scrapes my driveway entrance :(. Damned shame about that ice accident -- maybe you could just fiberglass the inside of that rip?

Looks good to me! But what the hell did you do to your bumper??

xseveredveganx
05-24-2011, 02:50 AM
Haha! Long story. I haven't had luck with front bumpers... first front bumper got hemmed up when I first got it. I was backing out and didn't notice my roommate's girlfriend's car to the right rear of me. I turned into her driver's side. Then on an icy snowy day, I was stopped at a light behind a 16year old kid in a 2wd 4cylinder S-10. Kid didn't know how to drive it well in the snow and started peeling out. I hopped out of my car to help him and yelled "STOP!", he didn't stop. Slid into me.
Fast forward a bit and I finally get it fixed and shaved the tow hook knockouts. Then about 8 months later, while pulling into a restaurant parking lot taking the JDM angle, a guy (not paying attention) ran into me. It was Xmas and the police officer that showed up wasn't very helpful. Since it was technically on private property, he couldn't do anything. We exchanged information and his insurance had lapsed 4 months ago. Geico wasn't at all helpful, so I've been rocking it.
You didn't get the memo? It's the cool thing to rock a fudged up front bumper. It's going to be the next sticker bomb and plaid craze. :D

05-24-2011, 06:46 AM
That blows!! Maybe you should just take the whole bumper cover off, LOL! I have been thinking about doing the whole black out thing with the plasti dip stuff since every rock in the state of MD seems to bounce off the front of my B. I am not a huge fan of the Hitler stash but its either that or get some vinyl cut that says "Rock chips aint sh*t!!"

I'm getting ready for a little rage reviving a dead thread but does anyone know of any similar projects? I know you can get civic front lips for under $50. there are also some other cheap universal lip kits. I've been interested in the middle ground between the home depot and $300 custom front lips. would you share the measurements ? anyone know of cars with similar front ends?

xseveredveganx
02-16-2012, 06:05 AM
Just look around for cars with similar curvature. Keep an eye in traffic and in parking lots. Just don't look like too much of a creeper.

One lip that I was considering was the Seat Cupra R lip. About the same price as the Focus SVT and it has a much different look. Could work really well.

EMAN44
02-16-2012, 06:07 AM
Most of the Civic front lips will not fit because they are not long enough...not saying that they cannot work, but it would take more work. The SVT Focus lip worked because it was plyable enough to curve to the xB's bumper, and I asked some of my old buddies on focusfanatics.com to give me a rough measurement of the lips.

Another lip that should work would be a 03-05 Mustang Mach1 front lip. It is made of the same plyable plastic as the SVT Focus lip and it is even longer than the Focus lip...I know this because I had a Mach1 lip on my old Focus...

Mach1 lip
https://encrypted-tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSO9rsNyksVleRClkGLeEhV0eAiLTdKwbTJ4nqGG5P2LnQn6LaO

Can't recall the measurements exactly, just take a tape measure and get a rough length of the bottom of the bumper from wheel well to wheel well and measure some other cars and go from there...

At my college we have an industrial design department. my roommate is in that major and we're talking about making a cardboard template and vacum forming a plastic piece over it. It may or may not happen but if it does i'll post some stuff here, i dont know where to start with designing a lip though.

I actually found a lip from a neon at the junk yard for $5 so i'm gonna hack it up and see how it looks. If that doesn't work i may still try to make my own though.
