View Full Version : Does the 1NZ-FE have automatic engine shut down with high temperature or low oil?

I'm installing a remote starter on my 2006 xB and I thought it would be a good idea to check with you guys to see if any one knows if the ECU/ECM has the ability to shut the engine down if there was low oil or high engine temperature?

If it does not do it automatically I plan to wire some of the "idiot" lights on the dash to a relay to trigger the "enable" wire on the remote starter.

One simple example is the ECM has a grounded output it sends to the water temperature high indicator light on the dash. The other side of the light is constantly connected to power (so grounding it turns it on). I plan to wire the one side of a cube relay to constant power and the other side of the coil to the grounded output from the ECM that turns on the water temperature high indicator light on the dash. Basically the relay coil will be in parallel with "idiot" light. Then I will use the normally open or closed contact of the replay to make or break the remote start "enable" wire.

This way if the warning light(s) on the dash comes on while no one is in the car to see it and react to it. The remote start will be turned off and the engine will (hopefully) be safe.

I was wondering if there was anything I could use to stop the engine if there was low oil pressure, I did not see anything in the factory wiring diagram.

Don't worry, if I do have multiply "idiot" light wired to the remote start I plan to use one relay for each "idiot" light I parallel wire into, to keep all the circuits isolated. All the relay contacts (switches) will be wired in series (AND Logic) so if any one of them is activated it will shut the remote start down.

I've installed alarms and remotes starts before, but this is the first time I considered this. I surprised that the manufactures of these systems don't recommend to do something like this.

Any input is welcome, especially any other cool ideas of this I can input or output to the remote starter.

Thanks.

There is nothing about the ECU to automatically shut off the engine from low oil pressure or overheating while you are driving the car. I suppose because it could be unsafe to disable the engine without driver involvement.
And I have not heard of remote warm up devices that would do this when you are not in the car.

You make a valid point about safety, loosing power steering for one thing would be bad.

I agree I have not heard of a remote start system that shut the vehicle down if there is low oil pressure or high engine temperature. That is why I plan to wire the remote start to shut down if there is a problem. For one I planned to wire and enable wire to the remote start that is triggered off the high temperature light. I just realized that I will have to make sure that this enable wire is one that only shuts down after the remote start is active. Otherwise when the first ignition wire is on and the lamp check is active it might stop the remote starter from starting in the first place.

I know for a fact that it will not shut off when it gets too hot. Mine got too hot while I was driving down the hwy, and it blew the head gasket.

correct^^^^ and that was a sad story

Since you are looking at protecting the engine, while it is unattended; and all agree, it would be unsafe, for it to shut down while driving; I would think it could be wired so it only "Automatically" Shuts Down, on over-temp, or low oil"; ONLY---when it is in "Park" or "Neutral" (if automatic), or Neutral (if it is a 5-speed). I believe the sensing mechanisms are already in the car, to recognize these positions of the shifter!
Protecting it while in Remote start mode, is a great idea! Using relays and protecting OEM wiring is a very good idea also. If I had a remote start, I would look into this at some point also. A great DIY. And you end up with something that most (in not all) very high priced cars don't have.
