I'm sorry; my title is misleading. I have no grounds to expect that Scion is even planning a "gen.3" xB, much less have I any information about how it might be powered if produced. (Indeed, I really don't see where Scion can take the xB stylistically beyond its current '11 incarnation and still be able to credibly claim continuity across models.)

So let me put this another way. On paper, I really admire the new 2.5L
2AR-FE which powers the new '11 tC - I want this engine in my '09 xB! I read on Wikipaedia (cited directly from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_AR_engine) that
these new engines have a bunch of new features:

"... [S]uch as continuously variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts or dual VVT-i, low friction technologies including an offset crankshaft, roller rockers for the valvetrain, a three-stage variable oil pump, reduced-tension piston rings and auxiliary belt drive. An Acoustic Control Induction System switches the length of the intake tract in two stages, based on rpm and throttle angle, thereby ensuring strong torque across a broad engine speed range. New tumble control valves enhances combustion while the engine is cold, and helps to bring the catalytic convertors up to working temperature quickly. The Tumble control valves, along with new 12-hole high atomizing long-nozzle fuel injectors, reduce the amount of fuel adhering to the intake ports and therefore maximize fuel economy and reduce harmful emissions."

And last, but not least, there's the 180hp the 2AR-FE produces (with greater fuel economy, as compared to the 2.4L 2AZ-FE).

So what do you think? I don't like turbos for a host of (probably irrational) reasons, but I also don't like added complexity (which is a point in favor of the earlier design), but I would appreciate the 180hp!

So would a hypothetical 2012 xB likely be powered as the current tC is?

Sure, I'd love to try the 2.5L in my 2008, but I know that isn't going happen ! Supposedly, the 2.5L delivers a fuel saving advantage over my engine, so it seems likely it will become available, as long as Toyota keeps Scion "xB" on the roster. Frankly, I'd have been open to the 1.8L -- mpg matters to me !

Yeah, I'd especially LOVE an xB1 with a ~170hp.1.8L (2ZZ-GE) and a 6-sp.manual!

Won't be 2012, I'm almost certain. But its sure to trickle down eventually as the 2AZ gets phased out.

Considering the xb is the last vehicles to have the 2az it could possibly be in the 2012 model. The rav 4, camry, and tc, all have the 2.5 now.

Think about this this way: the first gen xb1 ran for 3 years 04-07. The 2nd gen xb ran for 3 years 08-10. So I would think the revamped 2nd gen xb would run for 3 years 11-13. If the xb is even produced it must have the 2AR-FE because the 2AZ-FE is being phased out. I highly doubt they will put the 1.8l in the box

How difficult would it be to put the 2.5L 2AR-FE w/ 6speed into a 2008-2010 xB?

I have a friend that works in a salvage yard and was telling me how they had a new Tc that was totaled from the rear and how I should pull the engine and trans and throw it into my 09' xB. It certainly got me thinking

I looked into this. Nothing is the same( but the bolt pattern for the tranny) . You would need new motor/tranny mounts new wire harness custom exhaust done new ecu and probably more.

Thank you for the reply. I had a feeling it wouldn't be something easy. Since the transmission bolt pattern is the same, do you know if it would be a "relatively" easier task to swap a 6-speed manual tranny for my 5-speed manual?

YES! the 6 speed bolts right up. rob at descendant is working on a kit for it. right now they have a running tc with the 6speed in it.

Thanks for the info, that is good to know. Now I guess it is just waiting for the kit to come out! I love my xB, but, from the day I bought it, I said it needed a 6-speed. Very cool, I will definitely do the swap.
