At about 30k I noticed pulsation in the brakes so I ran the rotors through the lathe and started running smooth again. Up until that point I had been letting the dealer rotate my tires and figured they just weren't torquing the wheels properly so I started rotating on my own. 35k miles later and its time for new pads, and the pulsation is back. Has anyone else noticed this issue with the xD?

If you over torque the lug nuts it can cause the rotor to warp. That is what the tire rotation has to do with it.

As for the problem with warped rotors, I don't know what to say. I'm a little over 100K miles and haven't had any problems with the brakes at all.

Uneven torque on the lug nuts is the most common cause of brake rotor runout actually. A couple thousandths of an inch is all it takes to start feeling pulsation through the pedal as you apply the brakes. I am very adamant about using torque sticks at very least when putting wheels back on cars. It bugs the hell out of me when I see other technicians tightening the lugs on customers' cars with a bare impact gun.

OK my XD has about 35k on it and I have been hearing grinding noises when I brake. I know nothing about brakes so can someone help me out. First I need to know what bad pads or rotors or boots look like in order to replace them.

^all it is is a metal plate behind your rotor that is rubbing on the rotor while braking, just bend it back a little bit

17K (alot of miles right) and no problems here.

55,000 miles and there is still some meat left on the pads... rotors are fine, too. I just took a look at them while I was flushing the brake fluid. By the way, a brake fluid flush should be done about every two years regardless of mileage. You don't want water in the brake fluid to corrode the caliper pistons. When this happens, you get sticky calipers, which will result in uneven (and faster) pad/rotor wear, more heat (which could lead to warping of the rotors), and eventually will completely stick a caliper.

My XD has 50k and it's getting time to replace the pads! Brakes are great! But, more is always better... Has anyone upgraded their brakes? I did the Moonshiner 28 (103mi of mountian road twisties) and The Dragons Tail (318 hair pin turns...in 11 miles!) no brake fade or warpage!!

Nice, I wish they didn't have all the speeding devices up on the dragon, but I guess it still would be fun.
