I read that there is a cheap way to pick up some extra HP by tricking the cars cpu, by putting a resistor into the air temp sensor for your stock intake or aftermarket, the cpu will think the air is much colder than it really is, so to compensate it will use more air, and in effect more fuel. Sounds reasonable, anyone else try/hear this?

No. Don't do it.
If you look on Ebay you'll see tons of these "chips" for every car out there quoting a 10-20hp gain. It is total crap; worthless, doesn't work, and can harm your car--especially with our vvt-i engines.
Search for "chip" or "resistor" on here and you'll see lots of threads just like this...

How, exactly, will it use more air? That just doesn't make sense unless you're messing with the throttle position in relation to the throttle body position, which you're not. It's a bunch of crap.

Wow! I'm gonna have to make a kit and sell it on Ebay. these easily make 50hp. I'll be rich!

These 'kits' are a capacitor used to short-out something in the ECU. I wouldn't do it.
Cheap mods/fast gains = Broken car/No warranty

Its a resistor, not a capacitor, just so you know
