View Full Version : D2 Coilovers and Hotchkis Sway Bar
austin.c 01-26-2011, 09:32 AM Just ordered the D2 Coilovers, and I already have the sway bars. Going to do both installs at once.
The Coilover install seems straight forward, as well as the rear sway.
Any tips or tricks for the front sway bar? Does a lower control arm really need to be removed?
Thanx
Pay a professional to install it. It's a PITA!
austin.c 01-26-2011, 02:00 PM I dont trust others working on my car. So I do all my own work.
Are you referring to the Front Sway is a PITA? or what? Thanx
xseveredveganx 01-26-2011, 03:43 PM It's not that bad. All I did was remove the rear vertical bolt in the driver's side front lower control arm. To my recollection, it wasn't bad. I actually installed it upside-down first. That was a pain to remove.
But all in all, it's not bad. Just pull that one bolt out and shove the control arm out of the way a bit.

Please let me know what you think of the D2 Coilovers once installed!

Same here except I pulled the bolt on the passenger side. Just takes some wedging to get the old one out and the new one in.
DREWxB08 02-25-2011, 05:21 PM Any update???
austin.c 02-25-2011, 05:36 PM D2 Racing is loosing my support more and more.. First, they send the tC set, not what I ordered, their mistake. Then I send them back, and almost 2 weeks after they were shipped, they finaly said they had received them. Now they just sent out the xB set, and instead of drop-shipping them to me, like they did first, they sent them all the way to Cali, from North Carolina. So I hope in like 2 weeks to maybe have the correct parts I ordered.
I have since installed the Hotchkis Rear stabilizer bar, very disappointed, no difference.
Roller_Toaster 03-04-2011, 08:19 AM No difference after hotchkis rear sway? Wow, the general consensus I got from others who installed it was that it was a night and day difference...
austin.c 03-05-2011, 07:53 PM The rear IS NOT a sway bar. I have talked w/ a coworker from Roush and all he can see it doing is adding stability to the beam. Now if it connected to the beam, and to the body itself, it would prevent alot of roll. I have been thinking how I can modify it to connect it to the top of the shocks, then it would actually twist w/ body roll and help reduce it. I cant wait to get the front sway installed!
Roller_Toaster 03-06-2011, 08:30 PM Well, technically, all the front sway can do it make more understeer. If I understand correctly, alot of autox guys actually REMOVE the front sway to reduce the amt of understeer...so a thicker bar would just increase it? Less roll IS good though.
austin.c 03-15-2011, 09:25 AM After doing some reasearch how the rearend of our car moves with cornering, I see how the hotchkis rear bar works. Im just wondering if i dont feel it as much because im already on TRD Springs?
Roller_Toaster 03-15-2011, 10:01 PM I will be doing my first autox this sunday with hotchkis springs and new oem dampers, then installing the hotchkis sways for the next autox. Im hoping it will be slightly more neutral overall, and stay much flatter.
Depending on the springrates of the TRD's and how you drive, I could see that. I know I felt an enormous difference with the hotchkis springs.
austin.c 03-18-2011, 08:20 PM D2 Rear springs installed. max height for now. front sturts will be installed today after work. pic soon...

I still can go plenty low, but the roads still have pot holes like crazy.
I plan on going lower when i get heavier springs, and roll the fenders.
DREWxB08 03-22-2011, 07:13 AM Looks great hows the ride? have any pics of the coilovers?
austin.c 03-22-2011, 09:22 AM The ride is good, Its a little soft to go really low, 2.2k rear springs? D2 doesnt make anything heavier for the rear...
I didnt take any pic of the coilovers off the car, but i will try to get some installed pic since i have to make sure everything is still tight.
jrincon17 03-22-2011, 03:44 PM DANG RIDE LOOKS GOOD
xseveredveganx 03-22-2011, 08:54 PM I'm not sure if that's right on the spring rate... The KSports are 4.5k. I'm looking into something a little stiffer. (that's what she said)
austin.c 03-22-2011, 09:05 PM D2- Front 7.5kg/ Rear 4.5kg. (From D2, Confirmed on phone)
TRD- Front 3.1kg/ Rear 3.8kg. (Google Search)
xseveredveganx 03-22-2011, 10:02 PM And it's doubtful that they have anything stiffer for the rear, right? KSport told me what I have is the only rear spring that they offer.
austin.c 03-22-2011, 10:11 PM Same with D2. Swift Springs is my next option.
xseveredveganx 03-22-2011, 10:29 PM That's exactly what I was thinking. I looked at what they offer via their online guides, but I didn't see anything that would be suitable.
Keep me posted. :)
i see it's been a month, how are the coilovers holding on? are they super bouncy/ stiff or do tey ride smooth? any update im thinking about picking these coilovers up since they are cheaper priced than ksport lmk.
CIONIDE 04-26-2011, 06:08 AM any update im thinking about picking these coilovers up since they are cheaper priced than ksport lmk.
Don't do it, non-adjustable crap... next question?

They never felt bouncy, the dampeners smooth out the ride well. If you turn them to the firm setting, its almost like setting the spring rate higher too. Its a stiff ride, but comfortable on the soft setting, but on firm, it keeps me from rubbing.
Overall 9/10 rating.
Kingshawty12 05-01-2011, 06:44 AM Any recent pictures?
austin.c 05-01-2011, 06:24 PM the pic on pg1 are what i drive daily at.
austin.c 06-15-2011, 02:24 AM Anyone else on D2's or similar? i have a question about the rear shocks.
xseveredveganx 06-15-2011, 03:34 AM I'm on KSports. Aesthetically they appear very similar.
austin.c 06-15-2011, 03:38 AM the rear shock, can i use that to hold the suspension down, instead of there equation of allowing 1/3 of the shaft length in the body? it seems like it would be the same as the struts, ya? or no?
xseveredveganx 06-15-2011, 03:48 AM So what you're saying is: can you adjust the shock all the way down into the body, to compress the springs?
I wouldn't recommend it. What are you trying to do? Make the rear stiffer?

the shock would be at max extension at ride height.
im trying to add preload to the rear spring since i cant find any stiffer ones. D2 wont even offer anything.
xseveredveganx 06-15-2011, 03:41 PM You could do that, but I doubt the shock insert would last that long. Shocks will wear out prematurely if they're constantly at full droop or fully compressed.
What I would do is add bumpstops to the shock. There's polyurethane ones readily available. They come in hard and soft durometers. Can find them at an offroad shop or online.
I'm actually planning on doing this.
austin.c 06-15-2011, 04:13 PM I might as well just have custom springs made to the rate i want at that point. then i can use the shocks at the correct length
xseveredveganx 06-15-2011, 06:10 PM This is true. I haven't looked into getting springs made, but there are options. You could use rear springs from a G35. They may not be the correct length, though. They are about 6k from what I read. Could even use Swift coilover springs. Just have to measure the spring and perches. I was talking to Injected Performance, a vendor for BC Racing coilovers on the forum, about Swift springs. May see if they offer a higher spring rate for the BC coils.
