Any of you guys ever experience a stress crack in the windshield? If so, is that warrantied?

Yes, on a Focus (not mine), and yes its covered under warranty. To not cover it, they have to be able to locate the actual chip created by road debris on the windshield. If there is no chip you could stick a pen-tip in, then its manufacturer defect. dgHotLava 03-11-2005, 01:31 AM should not get a 'stress' crack as the windshield is layed on a bead of glue...so it can't get real stress cracks.... that said, if there was a weakness in the galss (chip, small crack or defective glass...) any stress would make it worse... if the service dept can determine its a stress crack, it should be covered...otherwise they will say it was road debris and you're on your own... Jynn 03-11-2005, 01:34 AM I had a stress crack in my last car (Kia Rio). The dealer tried everything possible to prove it was created by a rock. After 45 min they finally admitted it was a stress crack and replaced. My crack started under the rubber molding on the side. If they give you any hassles, demand explanations. They are stress cracking at an alarming rate. Some with almost zero miles on them. I have an employee where I work that cracked 3 windshields within 8 months. One got fixed on warranty, the other two were his to deal with. Just for fun go to hondaelement.org and do a search on cracked windshields. You won't believe the posts..... Ducman69 03-11-2005, 02:37 PM If they give you any hassles, demand explanations. Exactly, the burden of proof is actually on THEM to deny the warranty. They have to show the missing chip that started the crack to show its road debris. Especially if you follow the crack and it starts somewhere behind the seal, there is no way that road debris caused it. Let us know how it turns out. Denstyr 03-12-2005, 01:31 PM Thank you everyone for your insight. I have a stress crack and called the dealership about it. They said to bring it in and they'd determine if it was or wasn't. They determined that it IS a stress crack, and so they are replacing it. I’ve noticed my windshield making noises like rocks were hitting it. Denstyr 03-13-2005, 05:10 PM Are our windsheilds embedded in glue? IF yes, then yes, they CAN get stress cracks. If they're not embedded in glue, then I still dunno. It was determinded by the warranty manager that I have a stress crack. Stemming from the black area on the far passenger side of the front windshield. It's about 8 or 9 inches long now. I had the heat on, and then I realized it was making it worse. Oh well, they're fixing it. I'm happy! They said it was because the cab flexed alot. That was in a glue bead all the way around. All glass is in a glue bead. How else would it stay in or be weatherproof? |
