View Full Version : Stubby Antenna
MightyP 01-31-2011, 04:22 AM I want to get a stubby antenna, but everything I've found online says it's good for on up to '09 tCs... Will they work on mine or do I have to find a different one? If I need a different one, anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
Papa_Bear 01-31-2011, 04:45 AM If you know anyone with a 1g tC switch antennas and it screws in to yours then the stubby you are looking at will work. I'm sure it will work though so I would not worry about it too much.
interestingsmell 01-31-2011, 05:15 AM It should be the right one, I picked up the common s2k one that many tc1 owners use and it screwed into my tc2 perfectly.
ninerbud 01-31-2011, 05:37 AM I ordered one tonight, gonna do a 3" stubby. Should have it monday or tuesday, I will let you know if it fits. Had one on my 07 Tacoma, when I ordered it, it came with like 3 adapters to fit all different setups. If it works, I can get 3, 6, and 9" stubbys and I was thinking of selling them on here for around $25. Also I can get them in white and polished.
MightyP 01-31-2011, 03:11 PM Thanks all. Any suggestions on brand or places to buy them?
interestingsmell 01-31-2011, 11:46 PM The honda dealership I went to had 3 different options, all for about 25 bucks.
KidJustin 02-01-2011, 04:46 PM i ordered a s2k antenna mast from ebay...loos clean
just make sure u get the real OEM one...not the replica (if it matters to you)
Enzie 02-01-2011, 06:12 PM Does it matter what year s2k stubby you get? I dont wanna order something and then it doesnt fit D:.....
Papa_Bear 02-01-2011, 07:17 PM It's all the same. It's just the threads that need to match. Plus every s2k body is the same. Just order it lol or go to a Honda dealer like interestingsmell said
TankedPilot 02-02-2011, 05:26 PM Go to an Acura dealer and ask for a RDX antenna. They are like 5 or 6 inches tall, perfect fit and only cost $9  Thats what I have on mine, radio reception is great!
MightyP 02-02-2011, 05:32 PM ^^^Wow, thanks! I'll check it out on my way home tonight
kamikaze5G 02-14-2011, 05:22 PM Go to an Acura dealer and ask for a RDX antenna. They are like 5 or 6 inches tall, perfect fit and only cost $9  Thats what I have on mine, radio reception is great!
After getting a quote from the Honda dealer of $47 for the S2K antenna I ordered the RDX antenna ($17) and it fits great. Ditto on the reception!
XerotC 02-14-2011, 05:34 PM i would love to see pics!
MightyP 02-14-2011, 10:23 PM $17??? Acura by me had it for just over $10, including tax. Anyway, I love the look, but I have no idea on the reception. I haven't listened to anything but XM in months...
XerotC 04-05-2011, 01:19 AM i'm bumping this for follow up cause i'm considering buying a stubbie antenna too.
EDIT: also post pics please!
MightyP 04-05-2011, 02:46 AM Still can't really speak to the reception (XM rocks!!!), but I love the look. Any shorter and I think the antenna would look weird.

XerotC 04-05-2011, 03:03 AM so did you end up buying the acura antenna or where did you get that one?
MightyP 04-05-2011, 03:24 AM Yep, it's the Acura RDX antenna. Ordered it from the local Honda dealership. Under $11, including tax and they got it in within about 3 days.
KidJustin 04-05-2011, 03:30 AM if i have time to take pictures tonight ill post them..
i have a real s2k antenna
it looks so much better than stock...when comparing it, stock looks too long and flimsy
also reception is just as good...i mean ppl with s2k have no problem with them
goose_119 04-05-2011, 05:21 AM ive got one off honda crv. from what ive heard, crv, element, fit, s2k are all the same. looks great, base of it widens to match the tc base, and no issues with reception. mine looks just like mightp's (or it seems. hard to rlly tell in a pic)
r2dnel 04-05-2011, 02:32 PM Here's a closeup of mine. S2K Antenna from the Honda Dealership. Hope this helps!

XerotC 04-05-2011, 03:12 PM yea, thats what i'm looking for r2del
r2dnel 04-05-2011, 04:00 PM Hey XeroTC - Yeah I went to a Honda dealership and they gave me a 2009 S2K and he said it was the same for all S2K. When I got the notifier it said you asked how the reception was... So far so good. I drive about 30 miles to work and I haven't lost any signal.
XerotC 04-05-2011, 05:21 PM yea, i posted before reading the previous page about recpetion, so i edited the question out.
so yea i'm ganna check out my local honda dealership and see how much it costs
cazman 04-05-2011, 05:49 PM I have one from a 2010 Matrix. The Prius and Matrix use the same one. But they are pretty spendy.

XerotC 04-06-2011, 02:46 PM just to make sure...
RDX = S2000 antenna? cause that looks kinda like mightyP's longer and more slender RDX antenna while r2dnel's s2k look shorter with a slight bulge at the tip. most likely its the angles.
MightyP 04-06-2011, 03:14 PM They are different, but very similar. I went with the RDX because it was cheaper.

my acura dealer quoted me 33$ for an rdx antenna.. honda quoted me 38$ for a s2k antenna.., and toyota quoted me 48$ for a prius antenna.. WTF...
MightyP 04-06-2011, 09:53 PM Yep, my RDX antenna was $9 and change plus tax. Heh heh, maybe I should order one and sell it you for like $20. :)
unsungfate 04-06-2011, 10:34 PM thats still cheaper than acura..

wow, keep us updated if you find another dealer with fair prices.
Magnetic_Grey 04-07-2011, 01:15 AM Hey MightyP what's the other black square you have near the hatch?
KidJustin 04-07-2011, 03:06 AM i should let him answer but it looks like a navi antenna
XerotC 04-07-2011, 03:38 AM i remember him saying it was for XM if i remember correctly
johndeo11 04-07-2011, 06:17 AM it should be the XM...
question-are all the antennas that are mentioned have the same length?
donsun 04-08-2011, 12:31 AM Did my own stubby antenna for free:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o292/donxduck/Scion%20tC%202011/DSCN2536.jpg
Reception seems to be unaffected and HD radio works fine. I use my ipod or usb all the time anyways..

Yep, it's the XM Radio antenna.

r2dnel 04-10-2011, 04:45 AM The guy at Honda said mine was an S2K, but it looks different from what I've seen posted by others who say theirs are S2K as well.
No biggy, it's shorter than factory original, that's all I cared about. Sorry for the additional post.

ohh wow you couldn't see any of the details on the antenna in your earlier pic, like that numb on the tip. this one actually looks pretty good.
how much was this?
r2dnel 04-10-2011, 05:03 AM It came to about $26 including tax.
Occam 04-10-2011, 07:09 AM So glad these things don't have this cheesy roof antennas. Wish they'd just put them in the glass though.
IIRC, most cars use the same threads, or at least the same few variations. You could probably just grab an antenna at O'Reilly's or Kragen and have it work just fine.
krytikel 04-11-2011, 07:40 PM Used the perrin antenna off of my old EVO. Fit like a charm!

for this one Enzie bought (and I just installed on mine as well, GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE)
Honda Part # 39151-STK-A01
$7.33 from Delray Acura, they do charge a hefty shipping - 10.95 for USPS Priority, but it still was under $20 so I'm happy.
Plus it looks HAWT.
and if you want to see the OEM comparison:

XerotC 04-24-2011, 05:12 AM im starting to really like how the RDX antenna looks. i havent gone to a honda dealer to ask how much, i kinda feel weird driving my new scion tc into a honda dealership to buy a honda part.
MightyP 04-24-2011, 05:47 AM ^ Bah, don't feel weird. It's not like you're the first person to ever do it. Honda dealer here keeps S2K antennas on hand just because so many people want to buy them for other cars.
jeffs42885 04-24-2011, 04:33 PM I bought a really small perrin stubby antenna. It does not work good at all. Next to no reception on the FM, and the HD doesn't work at all
Scratch 04-24-2011, 04:53 PM I bought a really small perrin stubby antenna. It does not work good at all. Next to no reception on the FM, and the HD doesn't work at all
Another good reason to go with Honda OEM, if it didn't work, Honda wouldn't use it.
shadow7th 05-05-2011, 03:43 PM fyi - i tried the rdx antenna and while it looks great and regular am/fm reception is fine... it totally kills the hd radio reception and the hd radio sounds really good in comparison to regular. here in socal the majority of main stations are in hd even some am sport ones so i went back to stock too much of compromise for me for just the look.
johndeo11 05-07-2011, 06:59 AM ^so you mean rdx stubby antenna doesnt really for here in socal if you have hd radio?
shadow7th 05-07-2011, 07:02 PM ^so you mean rdx stubby antenna doesnt really for here in socal if you have hd radio?
Yeah if you like listening to the hd radio the rdx antenna makes it seem like there is no hd radio signal being broadcast or very weak signal.
Heres the comparison from my experience:
Stock antenna:
hd radio works great sounds awesome, other ppl remarked it sounds a bit like surround sound compared to the regular am/fm radio. one friend after hearing alpine system with the hd radio in the tc went out and bought an aftermarket one with hd radio for his ride.
Performance wise all major stations hd radio kicks in immediately or within 1-2 seconds. for the hd2 or hd3 substations tuning in occurs within 1-8 seconds. Occasionally driving under a bridge or overpass can cause momentary loss of hd signal.
Rdx Stubby antenna:
After installing, it was looking great but when i fired up the tc to go for a drive and i heard the regular radio i noticed the hd radio isnt coming on and the symbol doesnt seem to show up at all on a station which it normally does. I switch to another station same thing, i try another same problem, i try a fourth one and the hd symbol shows up blinking indicating trying to tune in the signal. It keeps blinking for over 30 seconds, cant seem to lock in. Finally it kicks in then lasts for about 3 seconds then tries to find it again for 30+ seconds. hd2 or hd3 substations cant be heard shows acquiring signal indefinitely.
I drove with the rdx antenna for a few days to see if it would improve, but no improvement so went back to stock. I like the short look but i like the sound with hd radio more.
Imo if you have the hd radio available with the stock antenna and switch to the rdx antenna its a bit like having a 1080p flat tv then hooking up the dvd player by rca instead of hdmi
anyone else have issues with the RDX antenna? wanted to go ahead and get rid of the ridiculous oem one. i dont really listen to that many cd's, and i cant get my alpine to work with my droidx, so i tend to listen to the radio more so i dont want to screw it up with an antenna that doenst pick up the HD stations.
deaddawg 05-07-2011, 08:06 PM I find some stations are not coming in as clear (FM stations in Toronto, ON). I am also using the RDX antenna.
heydan 05-09-2011, 05:32 AM Is the s2k antenna a better choice? Anyone that has both and tested the sound quality/difference?
Scratch 05-09-2011, 01:24 PM Been using the RDX in the DC/Metro area, no issues so far. *shrug*
biglilsteve 05-09-2011, 01:54 PM My S2k antenna gives me the same reception as the stock. HD radio works perfectly fine in DC area as well.
Honestly, either one you go with will be fine. As long as it's OEM Honda quality.

:ponder: Now im tempted to buy the s2k one from honda dealer to try it out....btw the RDX one that i have is an oem honda/acura part :P
biglilsteve 05-09-2011, 09:39 PM If you have an RDX one already then I wouldn't bother. The s2k one is more expensive for some reason. Do we know which one is shorter?
TankedPilot 05-09-2011, 09:43 PM I had both, RDX is shorter. S2000 antenna is like 40 bucks at the dealer and wasnt any better...glad it was stolen :)
XerotC 05-23-2011, 03:17 AM I can confirm the stubbie antenna on the 2010 Rav4 works on the tc2. it looks perfect, alot like the RDX antenna. However, i cant say the same for the tc2 antenna on the rav4.
sneak 05-23-2011, 04:43 AM Can you take some pics of the RAV4 antenna on the tC? How long is it compared to the RDX, and how is the reception?
I've tried a couple of different Honda dealerships for the RDX antenna, first one didn't have any in stock but they could order it (was way out of the way, just happened to be driving by), second one said I had to go to an Acura dealership ...WTF

XerotC 05-28-2011, 10:56 PM i basically took my parent's rav4 antenna and put it on mine. i couldnt keep it cause the scion antenna looks ridiculous on the rav4 and reaches too high. sorry. i'll take pics of it the next time i could borrow the car.
sneak 05-28-2011, 11:20 PM No problem, I ended up using a Honda Fit/CRV antenna as someone suggested earlier in this thread. Looks great, and no noticable difference in reception so far (I live in downtown Toronto though).

scionchicop 05-29-2011, 11:18 AM Just put a honda crv antenna on mine. Fit is perfect and it looks really nice. I don't have HD radio but will be replacing stock pioneer with Alpine INA-W900BT this week. Hopefully reception is good.
