Default Buying a 2005 XB

Hello,
I am looking to buy a 2005 XB 5 speed manual transmission with 99,000 miles on it. Are there any known issues that I should look for before buying?

Thank you,

Bob

Use caution when purchasing a used car. Maybe take it to a mechanic to check it out. Test drive too.

Clutch was just replaced. I've driven it and it drives great, shifts good and the carfax report was clean. I guess it's a go. It's for my son and he is a drummer, hopefully the drums will fit in the back with the seats down. He thinks they will.

Yeah they probably will, the one thing about gen 1 xb's is the cargo room. He can fold down the passenger seat too. Good luck!

I bought a 2004 auto back in Nov. 2009 with 100,000 on it at the time. For MD state inspection, the only things that needed replacement were the front stabilizer bar cushions, the rear drum brake pads, and the windshield washer fluid motor because an aftermarket bumper had cracked it. I am on my third windshield in a year but the cracks happened after I bought it from rocks hitting it. If your insurance offers windshield protection, get it.

The only known defect on this motor is that the intake variable valve timing cam gear can go bad, throwing a P0012 code and check engine light. If you're not getting a check engine light, then it isn't an issue. I had one come on @ 50,000 miles on my other xB and had to get it replaced. this one is fine at 110,000 miles.

I play drums as well, and I've never had an issue getting my full setup in the box. And parking at a gig to unload in the narrow spaces us musicians have to deal with is a breeze too. Your son is going to love it!!!

I remember my buddy telling me he worked on a few of the cam gears years ago, but most of the cars had relatively low mileage like just exceeding the warranty by a few months or few thousand miles. He also was saying how it seemed to be a big warranty fix, and chances are if it has over 50k miles it's probably been replaced already. Now I don't know if Toyota made a more durable, efficient part or something.

I need to go peruse your posts and see if I can find a reliable aftermarket clutch for mine. Rounding up to 90k and planning to replace it.

OP - check around for the 90k maint on the xB, and if you can have a mechanic look it over to see if any of the work was done.

Oh and if the two plastic honeycomb pieces on the lower grille are no longer there, demand a reduced price! =)

Thanks for all the great replies. We have had the car for a couple days now. Took him out yesterday for about an hour to teach him to drive a stick. He picked it up quickly and is flying solo today. Car seems great so far. I might steal it from him.

I also play drums and gig throughout the country and used the xB to transport my gear everywhere until we got the 4Runner, but the xB was great for that!
