Yeah, now I got to look at my car...got me wondering, 'cause I have a '05 as well, and I don't think it says 'max' there. I do have the 'new' A/C, since I know they pulled mine, and did a replacement (free). There is a TSB on it.

IIRC there were complaints about the A/C not being effective enough to cool the big box in really hot weather. The TSB that came out in response was an instruction to owners to use recirculated air rather than outside air for max cooling - the recirc air was already cooled, so helped...
That new trim piece appears to just reflect that instruction.

^^ Yeah, that may be. I know they replaced the whole shooting shebang fer me. And, since they replaced it just when it was getting cooler here (well, cooler for SOUTH FLORIDA), I have yet to see if it really made any change in the cool for the car.

No, not really - or at least not any more than most auto manufacturers.
Most auto A/C controls automatically select recirc air when "MAX A/C" is chosen - in this case, it's not automatic - Scion gives you a choice. :)
A typical example is my mum's 1990 Ford Tempo: Sliding the temp control to the coolest temp pulls maximum cooling effort from the A/C. Pushing the [MAX A/C] button closes the outside air vents and opens the interior vents - the already cooled inside air is recirculated and no hot outside air is brought in.
The same thing happens in the xB: Putting the temp control on lowest setting gets maximum A/C effort. Flipping the vent control from outside to inside recirc's the cooled inside air rather than trying to cool the hot outside air. Including an instruction on the control makes sense.
In most temperate areas using a [MAX A/C] setting is not really necessary, but it is helpful for initial cooldown of the interior. In the more brutally hot areas (for example south Florida, much of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, some of south California, etc., max A/C is almost a necessity.
Of course, there are other parts of the world, also... "In India, 'cold weather' is merely a conventional phrase and has come into use through the necessity of having some way to distinguish between weather which will melt a brass door-knob and weather which will only make it mushy."

I test drove an xB last Saturday. I was impressed that it had a "Max AC" setting. Living in AL, where the Heat Index (a factor of temperature + humidity) can reach 120 in the summer months, every car I buy has a "Max AC" setting. I was worried that the xB would not, since most smaller cars don't. I'm *very* glad the AC has some muscle to it. :)
I wonder if getting the "white roof" option would help any...?

no dude thats his custom weight distribution set up, so when u got 3 homies in the back seats you can properly balence the car, and when theres 2 ppl in the front you just throw that apple in the back. Ultimate in handling excelence!

Max A/C just means that the system recycles the air in the car instead of pulling fresh air from outside. It does not mean that the system is anymore powerful. I like the fact that I can select how I want to use the system (recycle inside air or outside air). Some cars don't give you seperate controls.

It's weird. I noticed today, that I look like I have the little light there, but it does not light up, nor do I have the words 'MAX A/C ' there. Now, I wonder why that is? I'm not sure what my build date is, but it is a '05 model. Hmm. Curious.
