I have seen a number of posts regarding squealing brake pads and thought maybe I could offer some info. The issue with todays non-asbestos pads is squealing issues. I have a method that I and my father, a mechanic, have used to help eliminate this problem. And it normally provides very good results. First you need to get some anti-squeal spray. NAPA sells a brand ( I appologize that I cant remember the name off hand, I will try to post it later) that is effective. You want a good quality spray, one that actually impregnates the metal. Also, dont skimp on the brake pads obviously. Now, take everything apart, and fine sandpaper to clean up the rotors (and drums on vehicles without 4 wheel discs). Make sure you do this well. Next, spray the anti-squeal on as directed, covering all break rotor surface. A good spray is made to spray the rotors, not the pads. While that is drying, use the sand paper to put a bevel on the leading and trailing edge of the pads. Wrap the paper around a hard wooden block or use a sanding block. Just a small bevel will do. Put everything back together. This has proven very effective and is a good practice when replacing brake pads. Hope it helps!

We always do that, as it is good practice, but it doesnt always prevent the squeal, as it is partly due to the makeup of the pads. You can try just machining them, but if it doesnt prevent the squeal, then you have to take it all back apart. It is pretty quick to use the above steps, and is worth just doing it the first time.

well i was taught to sand the rotors after getting them machined anyways. But the reason was to give the rotor some texture. A smooth rotor doesnt really stop a car good. The anti sqeal stuff sounds like a good idea though. I will try it when the time comes up
