I just bought a Scion xB, like a week ago. Reading the some topics, people say to change at 500 miles (break in period), is this true? Can I use the free oil change to do this? I'm kind of stuck.....pls help. :eyebrow:

I got my first one at 500 miles. Second was at 1000, third was at 2,500 and 4th was at 5,000. The next will be at 10,000 miles and I'll get another oil change at 15,000.
Yes, it is true that your first 1,500 miles of a car should be the "break in period" meaning you should get the oil changed atleast twice before 1,500.
The reason for this is because the engine is brand new, and metal shavings could still be in the engine. Trust me, oil changes aren't expensive, if you want your scion to last longer, get changes regularly.
hope that helps

I did mine at 1000 the second one at 4000 then my third at 6000/4months w/ synthetic my next one will be at 9000 or so. They say you can wait till 5000 miles, if you drive hard like I drive my TC then change it every 3000.

even with pure synthetic oil? isn't synthetic designed not to break down as fast as regular conventional motor oil? i live in vegas, and the weather is pretty harsh......every 3000 sounds good. thanks for the input peeps.

Thank you for being the one with logic. No need to change oil every few hundred miles, or put synthetic oil in it. My god, read the damn manual.

Everyone has a different view of how to make their scion last longer. Let's all post again in about 2 years and we'll see who has the scion with the best running engine.

Every 5-7 thousand, just like the instructions say.
I'd wager that the oil that comes in your car when you get it ISN'T the first oil that's gone in there. They tune these things before they drop em in. Break-in is old-school.
Think about all the Toyotas out there with 100's of thousands of miles. Do you really think the only ones still rolling are the people who changed their oil more frequently than recommended and went thru strict break-in procedures? I don't...

I guar-awn-tee you that cars still rolling with 100-200-300K miles are those that were well cared for and had their oil changed regularly. Oil is cheap, and essential to preserving your engine. Changing it more regularly than not is probably the least expensive thing you can do to keep your car running as long as possible.
And the harder you drive, the more frequently you should change it. Just do it. Or you might as well put aside "all" that money you're not spending on regular oil changes towards a new engine at 60-75K.
Break-in periods may be "old-school," but turns out class at the old school is still in session. Yes, your engine is tested before it is dropped into the car, but it isn't installed in your car and driven around in real-world conditions. Hence, the suggested break-in period, in which you should do everything you can to ease your car into the job it's going to have for hopefully a long time to come.
Or not. This month's Car & Driver has a long term test of The Mitsubishi EVO (a car I think we can all agree is just maybe slightly more sophisticated on the engineering side than our xBs, xAs, and tCs) and notes that owners who have ignored the suggested break-in period of 1000 miles are now reporting that they are burning quarts of oil in their $35,000 supercars...DOH!! There's some food for thought.
So, I assume everyone checks their oil when they fill up the tank, right? It's a good habit. If not, there's this thing called the "dipstick" under your hood, it's yellow and what it does is...
Bottom line: when it comes to checking and changing your oil, don't wait for the idiot light to come on. They are called idiot lights for a reason.

yes everyone has their own views and opinions about this, but i would think that the manufacturer would be a just a little more accurate than others

Yes that is true, but the main reason for changing oil is to get rid of the buildup of combustion byproducts, not because the oil breaks down.

they may have built the car...but they don't drive it everyday. In different parts of the US, there is different conditions, altitudes, air pressures, and temperatures. All those factors can ruin an engine, some places more faster than others.
I live in Central Florida, and I drive about 30+ miles a day. I've learned from my father that the first 1500 miles could determin the whole life of the car.
once again, this is just my .02

the dealer goes by an oil comanies recomendations...
as with all recomendations, there are exceptions...shorter trips, colder weather, stop and go traffic...
check out what the oil manufacture suggests with these conditions..
