View Full Version : Anyone done this yet?
Futureicon 03-14-2005, 09:27 PM Whats up all. I'm thinking of getting a 3M clearbra for my box. Ijust got a quote for professional installation: $675! You gotta be kidding Me! So, has anyone installed one of these themselves yet? Can a half way intelligent Do It Youselfer such as myself do the job without F-ing it up? :nails: Any advice would be appreciated.
FrankenScion 03-14-2005, 09:52 PM Contact rockblocker....you can probably just PM them.
nds_CARnivore 03-14-2005, 09:52 PM From what I understand they resurface your nose before installation with some special stuff. The install should carry a garuantee agianst bubbles...
I'ld hate to be half done and see a bubble! It's costly but as I've seen, woth it.

grnxb 03-14-2005, 09:59 PM $675? I don't want to be your financial advisor or anything, but maybe put that cash towards the new paint job you'll need in 3 years. Unless, of course, you can get something similar for about $600 less.
Futureicon 03-14-2005, 10:05 PM No, the actual bra costs around $175, the Installation is 675. As for the resurfacing, I'd probably just claybar the front end before applying the film. Anyone have any experience with this?

Max2k 03-14-2005, 10:23 PM Why not just rock the leather/vinyl bra? It works for strippers, it can work for you.

Who or what is rockblocker? An installer or someone who has done their own?
I've had the Colgan Full bra for the past year, but the stitches are ripping in places and I'm starting to get some scuffs from the bra.
FrankenScion 03-15-2005, 12:21 AM They are a company that sells/installs 3m clear bras. They are very informative.

The 'resurfacing' involved is just cleaning and degreasing... takes a few minutes, not big deal really.
There's about $25-30 worth of material and the rest is just paying the guy for his ability. I've put a thousand or more on over the years - again, no big deal really - kinda like tinting, once you learn the system and do a few hundred.... it's easy.
I've done some pretty high cars before, with some pretty big sheets of the stuff -- but I sure as hell aint never seen a kit listed for $600some dollars before. That's insane.
ksl_redsoxfan 03-15-2005, 03:30 AM somebody i met at the scion meet in tracy said they can do it for $500-550
windowtint 03-15-2005, 03:44 AM *shaking head* ... I can't give the crap away at half that price. nothing but welfare tightwads and broke inbreds around here.

mattxb 03-15-2005, 03:16 PM The autobody shop in my town is very respected. Nothing but great work from this guy. He said he tried installing this clear bra on a new Acura TL and it was a nightmare. They kept finding prints etc... when they were half way done. He told the guy who owned the acura to go to someone who is specifically trained to install.
Just telling you what I have been told. good luck man.

RockBlocker 03-15-2005, 03:28 PM Hey guys,
I thought I would chime in here for a minute and help answer any questions people have.
RockBlocker - is a current vendor the Scion community
We offer paint and headlight protection film to prevent rocks, dirt, sand and other debris from damaging your high impact areas on the vehicle.
All of our kits are pre-cut and designed to fit your vehicle's surfaces with a precise fit. We use only 3M film. This product has a clear coat finish on it and can be washed and waxed as often as you would like.
While we always recommend a trained installer to do the work in some cases you might be able to do the work yourself if you really want to save a buck. We have a lot of Subaru owners doing there own installs with great success. This is not to say that you can do it, just that it might be possible. If you have any questions or concerns about self install please check this out as a starting place.

All of our products come with a lifetime warranty against cracking, fading and/or yellowing for as long as you own the vehicle.

"HERE" being the area I live in - in real life. Not HERE as in the make believe world of SL.com and the internet

Funny, in you previous thread http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=50208 you said
A typical price for the installation is in upwards of $500.00
So your blow out $175 - same as a few other places + typical install of $500 is the same $675 you think is too high???
No offence, just making a point...

You have your right to your opinion. Are you saying $175 is not difference in money. Most people would beg to differ with you. My reference to $500 will and does depend on the type of car and what you are looking to have installed since the costs are dictated by how much material is being used.
unlmtdndeavor 03-22-2005, 01:30 AM i have a question, does this clear bra shine like normal paint? like will it have that shine and the depth of like a nice coat of wax on paint?
Futureicon 03-22-2005, 01:53 AM Ok, so I've found a temporary solution. My colgan bra is only dulling the paint where the clips attach at the wheel wells. I found that you can buy rolls of the same 3m tape used in the bras, on ebay for ten bucks. I'm just going to apply the 3m in the few places where my colgan bra is scuffing and call it good.
Material- 10bux
Install- zilch

Yes, The clear bra material from 3M that we use has a clear coat on the film. The more you wash and wax the better the film will look over time. If you dont wax the film it will look pretty bad after a couple of years.
Hope that helps. If you need anything please let us know. We would be glad to help.
Shoof 03-25-2005, 08:54 PM Putting on the clear bra is similar to tinting windows, in terms of application. I would definately not attempt to do it myself though. I've got the clear bumpers applied on my G35 and my brother's 525i. I swear by this stuff, it's been nothing but reliable for the 3+ years I've had them on other assorted cars. Of course I'm still careful while parking not to tap anyone, but you never know! It cost me about $250 (each car) to do the entire rear bumper on my brother's and my car, and a 6" strip in front to cover the area where someone parallel parking in front of you might rub against. I'm more worried about scratches from parking than stone chips while driving, which is why I covered a bigger area in back than in front.
