View Full Version : Plasti Dipped The Bumper
PEACEWALKER86 04-07-2011, 07:53 PM Decided to try out the plast dip...it was only $7 so I thought it was worth a shot. Turned out pretty decent, just gotta clean up the edges.:relief:

Parkers09xB 04-07-2011, 08:44 PM Looks good! Nice B you got there!
MooSE55 04-07-2011, 09:05 PM love the plasti dip..works well on wheels too..best part is if you dont like it just peel it off..
jnaval 04-07-2011, 09:08 PM I'm gonna do this to my entire front end to avoid rock chips. :ponder:

Hmmm... Or just the hood?
Jay Blaze 04-07-2011, 09:49 PM Forgive my lack of knowledge guys but what is plasti dip??
I mean it does look good on it just dunno what it is... :|
jnaval 04-07-2011, 09:56 PM http://www.plastidip.com/
It's used for creating rubber handles on what would otherwise be, bare-metal tools.
Jay Blaze 04-07-2011, 10:09 PM ahhh ok....
Thanks...and this is ok on painted surfaces?? I see like you mentioned chrome or bare aluminum no damage to the paint??
trdscion 04-07-2011, 10:45 PM Where did you pick yours up? I'm thinking the clear would be cool.

I'm guessing that harbor freight will have a lower price than most places. I think I will give this a try too. I've been wanting to relocate my license plate to the lower grill and this may give me what I've been wanting to do that so I can fill in the holes that the dealer drilled into my bumper
do you have your headlights blackhoused?
Scion Canada 04-08-2011, 12:08 AM That looks really good!
PEACEWALKER86 04-08-2011, 12:24 AM Thanks. Yeah I picked mine up at lowes...prolly overpriced but it took less than a can.
Jay Blaze 04-08-2011, 01:42 AM the more I look at it the more I really like it and know that I know what it is...it really came out hawt!!!
Was that rattle can or brush application?
RedDragons 04-08-2011, 02:00 AM I'm thinking of buying some tomorrow since im off and i have most of next week off i may go ahead and pull the bumper to blackhouse my headlights and while i have it off spray up the bumper and fill in those pesky license plate holes and relocate the plate.
TrevorS 04-08-2011, 02:42 AM Looks good to me! I see you did the lower lip as well.
PEACEWALKER86 04-08-2011, 03:50 AM It was the rattle can. 5 coats. I was in a but of a rush so I used a hair dryer between coats to speed up the process. I was going back and forth on the lip but thought if I didn't like it I would just peel it off. Glad I did it.
Kiddtango717 04-08-2011, 05:47 PM hrmmmmm this is giving me ideas.... Also i think the plastidip would be good for rear bumper accents, or to cover up big ___ scratches... dad somehow hit my rear bumper, not even a full month after i got my rear bumper replaced!
PEACEWALKER86 04-08-2011, 06:14 PM for sure. I'm gunna put a coat of clear plasti dip on the top of my rear bumper to avoid scratching it when putting stuff in the back.
Kiddtango717 04-08-2011, 06:40 PM I'd put a clear coat on the hood too if i were you, it's most likely cheaper than the 3M adhesive
Kiddtango717 04-08-2011, 06:45 PM actually a thought popped up in my head...after the coats is there a sticky coating left over when it dries? me living in the north east with all the pollen and leaves that fall the last thing i wanna do is have a crap ton of things stuck to the front bumper
PEACEWALKER86 04-08-2011, 06:49 PM maybe in the winter...it gives it a satin look, I just had my hood repainted and a new windshield put in this week because of rocks and salt hitting me.
Kiddtango717 04-08-2011, 07:03 PM hrm maybe a clear coat gloss finish might help that...
PEACEWALKER86 04-08-2011, 07:07 PM Not sure if much would stick to it and not sure if you could put a glossy clear on it, might be issues with solvents, not sure tho

It's not a sticky coating, it's a rubber-like coating. If you get pollen or whatever on it, just hit it with a water hose.
hrm maybe a clear coat gloss finish might help that...
Absolutely do not apply paint over it (clear or whatever), it's not going to work!
EMAN44 04-12-2011, 04:47 PM I plasti-dipped the rear bumper of my xB last night...instead of buying the $40+ rear bumper guard, I spent $7 and plasti-dipped it. Will post some pics tonite.

trdscion 04-12-2011, 07:10 PM Damn, my local Harbor Freight didn't have any spray paint, let alone Plastidip - at least not that I could see.
Note: Can't type "p-i-s-s-e-d," comes out "____ed" - lame...

sweet. can't wait to see. I was going to do mine clear...
DarkBox8 05-05-2011, 10:15 PM Any prep for using this stuff??
I have vinyl on my bumper now but its starting to break apart and look crappy. Im hoping I can peel the vinyl and just lay a couple coats of this stuff. Really not looking to do any sanding or anything.
I'm assuming a thorough wash and maybe some alcohol to clean the surface??

Just a good cleaning. I didn't even use alcohol. Its simple and takes less than a can. Been holding up good even against big bug splats, rinses clean.
trdscion 05-12-2011, 07:08 PM Worked good on my license plate back and P-Tuning bracket. Now just to try it on my wheels, only not sure if the texture will be cool.
pyroman131 05-16-2011, 05:10 AM Question for you:
If one screws up, how easy will it be to peel away? Would I have to hit it with some heat just like pulling vinyl?
I'm thinking of going crazy on my xB with this stuff. I like how it looks a lot.
@Emanuel: If you have your bumper and the picture ready, please post it. I'd really like to see it!

Sorry, I don't really have close up. There really isn't much prep work to do this. Just make sure the surface is clean and tape off the bumper and spray away...It has held up great through a bunch of weather and a few high pressure car washes....

kab2288 05-17-2011, 06:17 PM did the front of my bumper with this stuff, pleased with the results for only $7. however, i did have to go back and touch up edges, i used blue painters tape and when i went to take tape off, plasti dip would come off with it. what kind of tape are you guys using to get perfect edges?

Saw on another forum to pull the tape off while the tape is still wet to prevent the edges from peeling off
DJ_FroZone 05-17-2011, 08:54 PM they got this in blue? might do the same
trdscion 05-18-2011, 05:47 AM There are color kits that you can mix your own color or just paint over the black.
interestingmoron 05-21-2011, 08:20 PM Doing this mod right now...will post some pictures once its all done
interestingmoron 05-22-2011, 12:33 AM Here's a few pics of the process and the after result. Overall I'm pleased with the product, not my best paint work though. Probably going to come back in a few weeks pull it off and re-do it one more time. Definitely going to hit the back bumper too because i like the texture, look and protection it should bring.

so where can i get some of this? and the mix kit
trdscion 05-22-2011, 09:32 PM Um...I don't know I've only seen it online at their site or they might have had one at a local Home Depot where I got mine, not sure.

I don't know why more people don't paint them way stealthier. Looks like your headlights need a buffing.
flyingemu05 05-22-2011, 10:12 PM good call on the "bar" i was thinking of putting vinyl on mine because it looks like something is missing there with my grill, but plastidip looks a lot easier.
winglow 05-22-2011, 10:17 PM no where on this site does it show how to post. the word 'POST' does not appear. Hence I'll put my question in this inappropriate reply.
I want to
insall a type I hitch. I have no lower skirt/lip on my rear bumper. I'd like the hitch to be staight back rather than dipped below the "lip" Any suggestions). (also on how to post?)
xbbox 05-23-2011, 01:59 AM ^^Yeah, way wrong topic there.
Yeah, I need to bake them apart and fully clean the interior and exterior of them while I'm putting green lights in there in a couple weeks, lol! But yeah, deff had to do that bar behind the grill. Was to much of an eyesore.

look for the button that says "New Topic" at the top of the subforum you want to post a thread in.
