The mobile carwash guy who was washing my wifes car, told me that I should get disk brake covers for my front tire so I do not ruin my 17" chrome rims on my XB. He said it would cut down on the brake dust that collects on the rims and destroys the chrome finish. Is this a fact or just the opinion of one man?

Based on past use of those dust guards, they do indeed cut down on the dust coming off the brake, if the dust settles and the vehicle is not washed and also when the wheel heats up from braking, it kinda bakes it into the metal ... Thus cleaning is tough !
I think they are a good idea

I would recommend to just clean your wheels more often. Those dust covers also prevent cooling of your disks which can cause brake fade & rotor warpage. In my opinion, not worth it.

That would depend upon how you drive. If you are a cut-and-thrust-type driver on canyon roads it might be a problem. For us normal folk the brakes don't get all that hot.
