View Full Version : HID Fog Lights
tubbster 04-13-2011, 10:19 PM So, i've been thinking about getting a pair of HIDs for my fog lights, and i cant decided between 6000k(same as headlights) or 8000k, also for the HIDs, would i need anything else other than the HID kit from HIDextra cause i heard some people say they used a relay wire or something like that cause of having extra ballast? any opinions or help in installing the HID fogs would be of great help!
my06tc 04-13-2011, 11:19 PM using a relay is safer due to its taking the power from the battery and not the cars stock electrical system...its not made for it..all you would need is the two ballast, bulbs, relay is optional...plug and play....i would stick with 6k...i wouldnt go any higher...
MightyP 04-13-2011, 11:43 PM ^ What he said
SquallLHeart 04-13-2011, 11:53 PM if anything, i would recommend actually going lower in color temperature.
a relay harness would be technically and electrically safer to use... though not completely necessary.
VVTinme 04-14-2011, 02:02 AM 3000K looks and works great for fogs.
Eziekel 04-14-2011, 03:44 AM HID's in fogs are overkill IMO. if i had to go HID's, go with 3000k. otherwise i would just get Nokya 2500k bulbs.
Nightbeat 04-14-2011, 03:19 PM 3000k or bust in fogs, it looks awesome
mospeedtc 04-14-2011, 05:31 PM I just got the Nokya bulbs in mine and am a happy camper

6000k low + fog in my g8
tubbster 04-15-2011, 02:54 PM oh wow that 30000k looks really nice
lylvi3tboi 04-19-2011, 08:10 PM I was also deciding on whether to put HID's in my fogs, but I'm kinda worried that the bulbs will melt the OEM housings. Anyone know if it will or not?
i know lot of ppl on here have put some hid's in their fog's and i've yet to read anyone posting that its melted
but i'm also lookin to put hid's in my fog's so if someone who has can reply to state that they've had no issues i'd feel more comfortable :P
BeloZero 04-27-2011, 09:01 PM i just put a 3000k fog kit in mine. i touched the lens after about 2 minutes of running and it was crazy hot. i will be keeping an eye on that, im also waiting for the relay kit because the factory fog harness doesnt seem to work very well for HIDs
Scratch 04-27-2011, 09:25 PM I was worried about heat in the fogs after they were installed so I put in PIAA Hyper Yellow H11 bulbs and I'm thrilled with them:

4300k DDM 35w HIDs in the lows...
BeloZero 04-27-2011, 09:50 PM they dont look nearly as bright as the HIDs though.
tubbster 04-28-2011, 06:47 AM i was thinking about getting the nokya 8500k artic purple bulbs, but they are said to run at 80w... would that run in my car? or would it just burn out? also where are you guys ordering the nokya bulbs at? is there any suggested or preferred dealer for them?
Scratch 04-28-2011, 01:40 PM @BeloZero - they're plenty bright when you're behind the wheel, and they have that true yellow JDM-ish color I wanted.
@tubbster don't put in H11 bulbs beyond 55w, might melt the OEM sockets. The ones I used are 55w-110w and I've used them for over a year in my 2006 Pilot with no issues.
BeloZero 04-28-2011, 05:25 PM how much were the piaa bulbs?
and yeah, def would not run bulbs over 55w. you might get away with it for a little bit but after a while, you will prob burn up the housing. and running anything over 8000k is beggin to get pulled over. some states say anything over 6000k is illegal.
Scratch 04-28-2011, 06:14 PM The ones I bought were off Amazon, but I had gift money there to burn so I went all baller and bought the PIAAs:

I have put Nokya 55w yellows in my gen1 xB, there is NO comparison. They look pale and blech next to the PIAAs.

BeloZero 04-28-2011, 06:19 PM so you used those cause of the heat issue with HIDs?
Scratch 04-28-2011, 07:01 PM When I had my OEM fogs put in, I took my HIDs and test the fittment in the housings for the fogs. I just thought the bulb was to long and it just felt hot by the time they got to temp and the blue was out of the light output. I just felt safer putting in the H11s.
Of course, this is just me and my car, I don't think I've seen anyone talk about melting anything with HIDs in their oem fogs... YMMV!
ScionJim23 05-01-2011, 02:10 PM HIDextra sucks by the way. You'll be returning them within a week once they break.
donsun 05-01-2011, 05:51 PM ^maybe it's a hit or miss with hidextra, my hid's have treated me well for 2 months now
supadupac 05-02-2011, 12:37 PM where did u guys put the ballast for the HID fogs? I think im just going to settle with some PIAA's or Nokya's.. im not that big on it since the HIDs im going to get for my headlights will help more likely lol
11tcowner 05-05-2011, 01:36 AM hey i recently just put 8ks on my 2011 scion tc. Love it. I did put the relay harness on it as well.
