I have seen many post about scions not holding up well cosmetically (ie. paint, glass etc). I didnt really believe that until I took a closer look at my own car today. Ive had my tC for less than 4 months. Why did this happen to my windshield today (see pic)? Do scions have cheaper glass or something?

I know rock/pebble damage is a part of daily driving. But what I dont understand is why my new car of only 4 months has accumulated the equivalent cosmetic damage of my previous 12 yrs old ford tempo? And my last car - mitsu galant (5 yrs) didnt even have as many rock chips that I have on the tC now.

Its either just a weird coincidence, or we just figured out how scion keeps its price so low. I am not happy at all about having to spend hundreds to get the freaken windshield replaced. Anyone know the exact cost? I am so ____ed off right now! I know I should of gotten the Solara instead.

I don't see where a rock created that crack...maybe it's body flex?

I actually saw/heard the pebble hit the windshield. It was about the size of a small pea and only made a low tap sound. That is why I was so surprised it created a crack 5 inches long.

Again, Im not saying that these things dont just happen. But with the glass and the paint chips and all the other post about cosmetic problems. I am starting to lose a little confidence in Scion. Dont get me wrong, I still love my car though, but just not as much.

No I dont tailgate. And my insurance whats $500 deductable.

A lot of car manufacters are cutting back in the paint. Red EVO's dont even get a clear coat. Thats how bad some situations are.

What kind of insurance you got? My family has AAA. They replaced our truck's windsehild for free! And they came to our house! Now thats great customer service. :)

I use Geico. Those stupid commercials got to me. Apparently I needed to pay an extra $18/year to get full glass coverage. Would of been nice if they explained that to me when I bought my policy. I hope that little lizard dies!

Go to the dealer. If they can't see a rock impact they might replace it until warranty. Just tell them it's faulty glass! they might replace it for you. Your lucky there is no rock chip...take it in and ask...say I HEARD NO ROCK I JUST SAW A CRACK WHEN I GOT BACK INTO MY CAR!

Haha Ill call and play dumb and see if it works. But I wont get my hopes up. Does anyone know how much it will cost? I would check a local glass shop, but I doubt they will have anything for the tC yet.

Yeah i had the EXACT same thing happen to me 3 weeks after I got the car.. Cars been fine since i got the windshield replaced and its had its share of rocks hit it since then... Do i think its a scion thing? Maybe i dunno, but i know i've had my tc since a week after they came out so when they ordered my windshield it was something they ordered from japan (im assuming scion plant since it took 3 weeks to get) so if thats true and my new windshield is from there... dont worry ____ happens.

I have had plenty of rocks much bigger than pea size hit my windshield, and nothing has happened to my windshield at all. I dont think its a scion thing, just a weird coincidence that happened to you guys.

I think i read something in the xB forum about their windshields not holding up too well also. I am not saying it is definitely a scion thing. I was just ____ed that my other cars held up better for a longer time. It could very well just be a coincidence. But I am still ____ed.

Maybe it's just a freak thing where the rock just happened to hit the windshield in the right spot.

I had a similar issue in my Celica. That car took some road abuse, but it always came out on top. Then a small rock just kind of glanced off my windshield and that's all it needed to crack.

wow I am pretty impressed with geico right now. They are sending out someone to repair (not replace) my windshield for free. They said that they can attempt this and waive my deductible as long as the crack is equal to or less than the length of a dollar bill.

My friends 04 Acura TL had a small rock hit it, 3 weeks later his whole windshield is spiderwebbing BAD. Just thought I'd let you all know another car can have a bad windshield :)

Dude...

I lived in Michigan for a year and noticed that quite a few cars had large cracks, such as yours in the winshield. It baffled me at first living in miami never seeing anything like it before. What many people told me is that when a rock leaves a chip in the winshield, in the winter, when you put your defrost to melt the ice ,the crack expands and starts a spiderlike effect from the cold to hot effect. I actually towards my end of stay witnessed this phenomenon. Unfortunately, rocks are unavoidable, and defrost in the winter, well...what are you gonna do?Just my experience...It could be a totally different reason, but just something to consider. Best of luck.

Exactly^

Also, posts saying "it was just a small rock that did it", think of your windshield as a person's back. They don't lift right, don't have proper posture, don't exercise, and when they bend over to pick something up, "snap!". Then they say, "All I did was pick up something really light off the floor!". It's not that, it's the accumulation and there might have been weak spots in the glass, and just like Specialk79 said, the weather affects it greatly.

When my gpa moved to Canada from the Philippines back in the late 80's, he put warm water on the windshield to get the ice off....guess what happened:)

What the FREAK!!!!???? Just got off the phone with toyota. They want over $1300 to replace the windshield. Can we say rip off :tap: ?

And yes, I know about weather and rock chips etc. The whole point of my post was to compare my tC with my previous 2 cars that didnt share any of the body problems. Thats all I was saying. And I know it may very well be a coincidence. I do have some doubts because I read a lot of post about similar issues. Either way it just sucks to be me right now.

$1,300 ?! Holy Shiitake! I was thinking $200 maybe $300, but over a thousand dollars for a piece of glass?!

The service dept of the dealer normally would not cover this under warranty as a rock hitting your windshield is considered a road hazard because your windshield was hit with a foreign object that would be have to be covered under your insurance policy as it is not a defect in the windshield.

Dang... the dealership should take responsibility for this! It scares me to think that something like this can happen!

Even if our cars are 16k, it's not like we all have 16k sitting in our back pockets, let alone 1k to burn on a faulty windshield!

There is no way in hell I am going to pay Toyota $1300. Looks like I might just have to go through my insurance and pay a $500 deductable because the crack grew an extra 4 inches, so it is not repairable anymore. It has to be replaced.

Does anyone know if filing a glass claim negatively affects your insurance premiums?

A month after I got my TC I had a huge ___ rock hit the middle of the windshield. It left big scratches but did not crack the glass. I was surprised it didn't crack, but I still need to get it fixed. Seems like a freak thing that your windshield cracked like that. I think XB’s have problems because the glass so vertical.

Most full coverage comes with unlimited glass coverage. That means you dont pay a deductable on glass repair. So you need not worry about that.

Mine was smacked by a rock so hard the other day that i thought it would break for sure... did not even leave a mark... maybe you just were unlucky and got a bad peice of glass? I have never seen a a rock that small cause a crack, a chip maybe, but not a crack.

A Solara?????????? I could see my mom in one of those  Ok, had to say it.

thats true, your insurance should replace your first windshield for free becasue they dont want to run the risk of the damn thing to come in on you and have to fork over more money

well i called a few auto glass shops and this is basically what happened:

Shop #1 = $337
Shop #2 = $360
Shop #3 = $185

Toyota = $1300!!!

Now should I be nervous going with the $185? Its probably what Ill end up doing because I really dont have spare cash right now. But does something seem funny about that price tag?

Oh by the way, the crack shown in the picture has doubled in length since yesterday.

Ripoff? That is not a bad price for a windshield replacement. New car glass is VERY expensive. The days of getting a new windsheild for a few hundred bucks are over. My father has seen them come in anywhere from $750 - $2500 for the glass alone... no labor. My old saturn windsheild was $750 for just the glass. The real ripoff is the markup from the glass company to the distributor! But like everyone keeps saying, if you have an even decent full coverage policy it comes with full glass coverage, no deductable. The last two companys I had did not give you a choice, they just include the glass coverage. It is definitely not a problem with the glass in general, unless you just got a bad peice by luck... Mine has stood up to some rocks very well so far..

I would be leary of ANY of those prices. I would be surprised if they could get the glass for even close to that, much less the labor! I would make sure they are using the correct glass and not some brittle, cheap crap that will definitely crack in response to anything. I haven't even seen a side window replaced for that price in years. Are you sure that wasnt just a labor quote?

Captain_tC
03-17-2005, 10:04 PM
All prices listed include glass and labor. I disagree with your comment that $1300 is a good deal. That is highway robbery. And the lower prices are also glass and labor.

I think i must of just gotten bad luck with getting a bad manufacterer glass because as mentioned before most windshields can withstand a lot of abuse before an 8 inch crack appears like mine.

My insurance is geico and apparently even with full coverage (which I have), you still have to specifically specify if you want $0 deductable for glass. They did not tell me this when i purchased my policy. So if i want windshield replacement, its $500 deductable. After I replace this one with an aftermarket, I will add on full glass coverage. Best I can do for now.

Just want to let you know that when my moms car got its windshield replaced it cost around 1200 so its not an out of this world price. This is just how much these people are charging, and this was an independent guy who was a member of the BBB. So I think that those guys you got that hundred dollar quotes from must be using some low quality glass, that will break in a second if a tiny rock hits it. I would reccommend doing it right the first time, and spending that $500 deductible to get quality glass. If you cant afford it right this second, live with the crack in your windshield until you can afford to get a new one. Remember its not just about the looks, but your safety that you will be compromising with a cheaper product.

Its like scraping your side mirror going thru mcdonalds drive thru and blaming it on mcdonalds for having brick walls by their drive thru and you trying to get mcdonalds to pay for the damage to your car... No way will that ever get paid for there much less a dealership for a rock hitting your cars windshield.
